Buggy metronome?
Been getting a new problem recently. On big projects I've found switching the metronome on or off on play or record can cause a rupture in the system - it hangs for a while / acts drunk then goes back to normal. On one occasion it stopped all audio (the engine claimed to still be on) - even a Sonar restart couldn't bring it back. Only thing that fixed it was a PC reboot. Anyone any ideas? 8.5.1, Q6600, XP 32 bit, 4GB ram with 3 GB switch.

I have had issues with the metronome since v5 - my work around is that whenever I make any change to the metronome settings including enable/disable, I close Sonar and restart it. Otherwise, I eventually have Sonar crashing.

Sorry, missed this reply! I'm using it for scoring to video - it varies almost moment to moment if I need to work to a click or need to run free of one. Also I tend to prefer working to click only for the first couple of instruments to get laid down, then remove it. So I end up switching both play and record clicks on and off extremely regularly.

So I end up switching both play and record clicks on and off extremely regularly. Run the metronome to a bus, and mute/umute the bus instead. Much more accessible, and you can do it on the fly. This also lets you change the level easily.

the internal metronome does lots of strange things. i also use sonar to score to video and have lots of tempo and time signature changes. one thing is that the video cant play corretly when counting in with the metronome, but in some situations beat 1 of the count in will be a long sharp burst of sound. often, a midi metronome behaves much better.

Good tips, thanks guys. Fairly unbelievable that in version 8.5 after who-knows-how-many-years, Cakewalk can't even make the metronome work! Any comments, Cakewalk peeps?! Lavoll, interesting to hear you have the same experience as me with video too - if you fancy it, take a look and add your thoughts to this thread - http://forum.cakewalk.com/tm.aspx?m=1856443 - where I've made a wish list of video improvements (of which the metronome is one).

Sonar's Audio Metronome works great if there are no tempo and time signature changes in the project. The more complex the time line is the more unreliable results Audio Metronome produces. MIDI metronome track is best way to avoid problems.

This raises a new question for me - what is the lowest resource free VST?! The more I think about it, the more bonkers it is that Sonar doesn't have a reliable metronome... it's kinda beyond satire!
