Unable to Install Drivers

I am unable to install the VS-700 drivers onto the computer.  The directions appear rather simple and easy to follow.

I insert the driver disc and it goes into action.

I select English as my other language skills aren't that great.

The Set Up Wizard appears and I select "next".

I choose the task, "Install VS-700 Drivers".

The next pop-up, "VS-700 Driver Ver.1.0.0.  "VS-700 Driver will be installed on your computer" and I click "Next".

The next pop-up, "To begin installation, clikc [Next]", so I click on "next".

Then, it indicates the drivers are being installed as the horizontal line gets filled in across the screen.

A pop-up appears with written instructions on "Ready to install the driver".

1.  Please use a USB cable to connect the VS-700 and your computer, and then turn on the power of the VS-700.

The USB is connected and the power to the VS-700 gets turned on.

I wait for the "Found New Hardware Wizard" to appear.

When it appears, it says, "The wizard helps you install software for: UM-1"

I have "Install the software automatically (recommended) and click "next".

This is where the roadblock shows up.  The next pop-up says, "Cannon Install this hardware"  "The hardware was not installed because the wizard cannot find the necessary software."

I've done this a multitude of times, trying different things, but it all ends here.

I've got Windows XP as the OS and I have been using the CD which came with the V-Studio which is supposed to have the drivers on it.  For some reason, the computer is not finding the software on the CD so I downloaded the drivers from the Cakewalk site and put it on a thumb drive (my computer which I am going to be using, which has Sonar 8 on it, is a stand alone computer and not contaminated, or hooked up to the Internet.)  I inserted the thumbdrive, and sure enough, the same driver menu exists on the CD.  Anyway, I tried installing the drivers from the thumbdrive and while directing the software to look in the specific file on the thumbdrive -- all to no avail.

    Bummer, dude.

I even have a relative here who has been working on, or as he says "fighting with" computers for years and he can't figure out what the problem is.

    Bummer, dude.

Hey RA1222, how is it going. Sorry to hear you are having some issues. What do you mean by

"The Wizard helps you install the software for UM -1" What is the UM 1 you are talking about?
From what I know the UM-1 is an old Edirol USB to Midi Interface. Have you got the full V Studio system with the VS700R interface and V700C controller? You certainly dont need an UM 1 if you have the full V Studio system.

Try contacting Cakewalk support. They are very helpful in helping people setting up their V Studio systems for the first time.

I do have an Edirol FA-101 but it isn't hooked up.  I was wondering what the UM-1 was because it isn't in the drivers menu for the VStudio 700.  Perhaps, this is a hint as to where things are going awry??

Yes, I do have the full V-Studio system with the VS-700R and VS-700C.

I wonder why the Wizard it wants to install the UM-1 if it is associated with the Edirol?

I would try going into your system folder and hardware devices and maybe uninstalling any other drivers you dont need first. You dont need any of those drivers if you have the full V Studio system. The VS700R comes with a set of Midi INS and OUTs if you need to connect up any external hardware that you may have.

Reboot and then try the V 700 driver install again. Once you have done that as well you need to update that driver to V 1.1.1 and also you need to do the firmware update for the Fantom otherwise it wont work. Read the instructions carefully on the Cakewalk website about the firmware update.

There is a limit to the number of midi drivers you can have installed under Windows XP. Maybe you have too many and that could be the issue not sure. Keep in touch with Cakewalk support as well.

I've uninstalled the driver for the Edirol, which seems to be the only driver that won't be needed which is currently on my computer (I don't have much).  I've rebooted a couple of times and the Installation Wizard keeps wanting to install UM-1.  So, I don't know for the life of me what on earth a UM-1 is or why Mr Wizard is fixated on it.  If I can get him to expand his horizons, maybe he'll see the drivers for the VStudio.

Does the Um-1 appear in a slot with a drop down arrow? Hit that arrow and choose the V700. If there's a conflict with your Um-1, uninstall it and do the install again. I take you had a UM-1 on your computer? Strange problem.

It's clearly a driver dominance problem, but if you had a FA-101, I don't see why you'd the UM-1 popping up.

When I get ready to install the drivers via the steps, I get to the point where I need to plug the USB from the VStudio 700 into the computer.  Then, I get the pop-up in the corner saying there is new hardware found.  In that pop-up, UM-1 is displayed.  Then, the "Welcome to the Found New Hardware Wizard comes up stating, "This wizard helps you install software for: UM-1.

I'v also tried putting the USB connection into several differnt USB ports.  Don't ask me why, it just seemed like I was trying to do something.

I've done searches on different drives in the computer for "UM-1" but come up with nothing.  I was thinking, if I can find out where this dastardly UM-1 was hiding, I could delete it.

I also tried calling Cakewalk tech support but they aren't there on the weekends.  So, I have to wait until I am at work on Monday when I won't be at my VS-700.    I sent an e-mail to Cakewalk with my concern but I guess it won't get answered 'til Monday, too.

I already had Sonar 8 installed on the computer prior to getting the V-Studio.  When I look at the booklet which has installations in it, it indicates you start with installing the drivers.  The section at that comes the installation of the VS-700 software and then Sonar 8.  One could think it is implied one has to make these installations in this order.  Is there an element of truth in this?????

It's hiding in your registry. A dangerous place to go if you can't identfy the particular file and it's associations. Open run, type in regedit,  go to find, you'll see it, type in UM-1, delete the threads associated with it. Go to Find next, delete all the Um-1 registry threads it finds. It's dangerous way to clean out files, do it at your risk.

No, I don't think so. Sonar 8.3.1 first. The V700 software second. The V700 updates third.

Craig is right. I also had Sonar 8.3 on my computer prior to getting the V Studio system. So it can be Sonar 8 then driver install then update (1.1.1) as Crg has said. Dont forget the Fantom firmware update as well.

I was also going to say there is a registry reference still on your machine to the UM-1. You can do it the way Craig has suggested. There are also registry programs that can do this for you as well. Just make sure you always backup any registry changes so you can go back if you need.

I found three references to UM-1.  I don't know what they are and because of that, I don't know if they are necessary to run Sonar or Finale, which I've got.  I would hate to delete something if these are needed.

How do I back this up?  I've never worked in registry before.  Am I able to "cut" and "paste" these files to a thumb drive???

    Hi RA1222,

Double-check your USB connection... any chance it is connected from your computer to the VS-700C and not the VS-700R? If you are using the full system, it must be connected to the VS-700R.

A USB cable connected to the VS-700C = VS-700C in stand-alone mode. The VS-700C in stand-alone mode requires flipping a DIP switch located on the back of the unit. If you fail to hit the DIP switch, Windows recognizes the device as the UM-1.

Perhaps this is what is happening on your computer? I'd look into that before diving into the registry.

I don't think you can cut and paste from registry. It's pretty finicky about letting you do anything but save a registry backup that only opens back to the registry. I've had trouble trying to do so. See if you can write down the path in the registry to where they are located. In example: Local Machine/Software/Windows NT/ name of folder/name of folder/...etc.
If they're a part of Finale, you could uninstall Finale, do your V700 install and put Finale back in. The Finale drivers could be a problem.

Boy, am I glad I waited before taking a risk and delving into the registry.  Thank you very much for the input.  A simple mistake of having my 700C connected to the computer instead of the 700R caused me all sorts of heart ache.  I have to admit, it just seems more intuitive to connect the working surface (i.e. 700C) to the computer as opposed to the 700R.  Again, thanks for the advice.  It was a simple solution which I over looked and would have kept over looking it without your help.

I did connect the 700R to the computer and the drivers have been successfully installed.  Woohoo!!

Now, onto the installing the software.
