Forum making anti-virus go bananas?

Am I the only one who's anti-virus (Kaspersky) goes in over-drive when loading a page on this forum? When I open any of the threads or reload a page in a thread (but not on the on the topic overview page), the anti-virus process (avp.exe) starts using 100% cpu on the core it is running and the page doesn't actually load. This goes on for 30 seconds or a minute or so. When the page finally loads the CPU drops back to zero (or so).

This doesn't happen on any other internet page and it didn't used to happen on this forum either. Very strange...

    Hi UnderTow-

My avast! ball spins a little in the System Tray when I load, switch pages, etc., but no, I'm not seeing anything like what you're describing.

    Thanks for responding Susan!

I would like to add that I use Firefox. I better try if the same thing happens in IE.

The forum seems to have a lot of DHTML now. I use Antivir Premium, which is pretty aggressive with web pages, and I don't see any spiking issues like you're seeing with Kapersky on this forum. I'm on IE6 (still... I know... but show me a "better" browser and I'll use it... and all the HTML devs can suck eggs and enjoy my IE6 dust...).

Same behavior hitting the forum with FF 3.5.3... smooth as a banana cream pie...

putting http://forum.cakewalk.com/* into exclusions solves this problem. threads appear almost right after the click.but then HTTP traffic from/to http://forum.cakewalk.com/ is not being scanned...

Just now, I posted a topic on the Kaspersky forum regarding this issue, maybe they will help us.

Anyway, I think, I didnt have this problem when using KIS 9.0.0.463 (or .523) (KAV versions are the same)

There might be some malicious software present in the forum or you've picked something up from a thread here. It wouldn't be the first time. Perhaps Kapersky hasn't come up with a fix for it yet. You should report it to Kapersky. The CPU spike you're getting could be an indication of a of a hack tool trying to or already working on your computer. It's a jungle in here.

Most A/Virus apps have a report log? maybe looking in there may provide a clue.

The CPU spiking to the max (100%) is not good, I too would be concerned because I hate pushing the CPU that much.

As someone pointed out; definitely report this to Kaspersky

    Marek,

I am on 9.0.0.463. I think the forum changed. Not KIS. (Which if it is true is an unwise thing to do before the week-end).

I am a bit weary of excluding the forum. I don't really trust that whoever installed this forum software is capable of maintaining good security...

Let's see what Kaspersky say about this.

    Really... Why?
Is there some risk that we should all be aware of?

    uncleswede,

Nothing that I am aware of but this version of the software is clearly worse than the previous version as far as ease of use and functionality is concerned. That to me shows gross incompetence from the developers. Also whoever is responsible for maintaining the forum at Cakewalk should have first tested it on a non-production server and came to the conclusion that it simply was not good enough. In other words, it should never have gone live.

In general I am not particularly in favour of web servers running on Windows.  Both for security and efficiency reasons. Web servers belong on UNIX/Linux/BSD/etc machines. There are some very good, very efficient, very secure and much more powerful solutions available on Linux/BSD/UNIX/etc. Both paying AND free. The fact the Cakewalk chose this particular product running on windows tells me all I need to know about the level of their competence in this field.

Looking at the forum's developer website shows that this product is aimed at people that are not too clued about the technical aspects of internet services.

I have Kaspersky on my DAW and when online I also use the browser for the forum and the download account pages of Cakewalk and my various plug-ins. I have found it to be the least intrusive of the various anti-virus systems I have used over the years and have nothing like the symptoms you describe. If you are current you can upgrade FOC to the 2010 version, which I did yesterday using Acronis True Image in Try and Decide mode to check first. It seems if anything to run with even less intrusion so you might want to try this

Just wanted to chime in that I have the exact same issue... only the delays have been even longer (older machine).  Glad that it will be fixed in an update - had not successfully logged in to the forum for a couple of weeks (hadn't waited long enough). Note that I am on Kaspersky 9.0.0.459.

Great Marek. :) I also have the forum in the exclude list for the moment. I will be glad to remove it after the update.

noldar12, you can add http://forum.cakewalk.com/* to your exception list in Kaspersky. That will give you a temporary solution until the update.

    try it!
