Audio Engine On, but it's NOT On!

Ok, here's one for you Sonar Gurus. I thought I was having a problem with Session Drummer 3, but apperently not as it's happening with both Session Drummer 3 and Battery 3. Seems to be a bug in Sonar. Here's what's happening.

I have a project with audio and one midi file for the drums. I have Battery 3 loaded as the soft synth in the drum track. The "Engine On" in green is visible on the bottom of the screen. The Audio Engine button at the top is in green. When I push play everything plays fine including the drums. After pushing stop, the Audio Engine button at the top is now grey, BUT, the "Engine On" at the botton is still there in green. Clicking on the piano roll view for the midi drum track moves the meters for the track, but there is no sound, same with clicking the drum cells in Battery 3. So the audio engine is NOT on even though it says it is on the bottom of the screen. Clicking on the Audio Engine button at the top turns it green again and now the engine is back on, and I can play sounds by clicking the piano roll view or the Battery 3 cells. But it does the same thing each time I push play. I didn't have to do this with 8.3 as far as I can remember.

Is there a setting I could have wrong or could this be a bug?

I have tried it with both ASIO and WMD/KS drivers, and with Session Drummer 3 and Battery 3 and still the same thing.

System specs:
Windows 7  64 bit
Sonar 8.5.1.148  64 bit
i920 with 12 gigs ram
Delta 1010 (with the Windows 7 beta drivers, Maybe this is the cause?)

Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

This is indeed a bug.  Auto-rewinding to the beginning (00:00:00:00) of a track at the end of a track silences all audio, including the active softsynth you are echoing via the highlighted midi track.  This is new behavior in 8.5.x.

There is no reason for this to occur - the audio engine is ON, and preview of softsynths by live playing in midi should not be dependent on where you are in the track.  Tapping spacebar twice to move off the 00:00:00:00 should not be necessary.

If it's a bug, it's not universal. I could not reproduce this issue on WinXP 32, and I still can't on Win7 64. My audio engine is still lit after auto-rewind with Stop At Project End enabled in a project with only Session Drummer 3 and a MIDI track to drive it, and no other audio tracks soft synths or metronome active to keep the engine alive.

Either this is an environment/driver-specific issue, or you're missing part of the recipe to reproduce it, which is going to make it impossible for Cakewalk to verify and fix it.

I just tried on my system and i could not reproduce your issue. it might be a global setting that you have checked or is not checked. go thru them and take a looksie

I had the issue specifically with SD3 when 8.5 came out, updating to the latest 8.5.2 fixed the problem.

Dont know if it matters but I also did a fresh W7 install and didnt tweak any within the OS. W7 seems to work best with no changes when it comes to Sonar, at least for me anyway.

That's just it - the audio engine IS lit, but no sound comes out when playing a midi input until you take it off 00:00:00:00

Brundlefly - I don't think it is universal either, but fairly consistent for me with my current templates.  You were one of the first to chime in that you were seeing this as well back in October - here is the discussion we had going:

True, but only in the very specific instance of aborting a MIDI recording without sending any MIDI to the input, and that was cured (though inexplicably) by enabling Zero Controllers When Play Stops.

In testing for my last post, I encountered this problem with the output going silent on rewind, though the audio engine and all track meters remain active. Then I remembered that the blank project template I was using had Stop At Project End enabled. A long time ago, I filed a problem report about this (I believe it was against S6). I unchecked Stop At Project End in Global Options, and the problem went away.

Since I normally have Stop At Project End disabled, I don't know if this was fixed in some intrevening version and has returned with 8.5.x, or has never been fixed.
