What's Your Favorite Feature in SONAR 8.5?

Hello Everyone!

Now that SONAR 8.5's been on the market for a few months, we want to know... "What's your favorite feature?"
One of the new beat creation and arrangement tools - Matrix view, Step Sequencer, Arpeggiator?
One of the new multi-stage effect plug-ins for percussion and vocal tracks - PX-64 and VX-64?
Windows 7 compatibility?

Let us know your thoughts here.

We appreciate your feedback,
Kate

    The PX-64 and VX-64 plug-ins are excellent.

I just within the last week was able to get things worked out,am waitin' for my window 7 to show. How do I use audio/snap palette...I sit recording and playing me guitar, tappin my toe with the metronome turned off.I then go to audiosnap and try to have progect follow my lead. You know ...my rhythum. It goes all over the place.I need to calm it down so it comes up with an average beat per minute.I can't seem to find the directions so as to learn.I guess I'll just have to go and spend some more money.

My favorite feature in SONAR 8.5.1 is the automation envelopes.

I like that feature... so it seems a shame that envelopes are such a mess in SONAR; it's a pain to select the nodes, sometimes the envelopes just freeze, and sometimes when you are working with layers the envelopes just disappear.

Heck even if Cakewalk get's the envelope mess fixed the envelopes will still be one of my favorite features.

    best,

I remember having a little dialogue with Noel last year and I asked him if they could do this.  They re-wrote some of the device driver code in 8.0 when they made it possible to switch devices without restarting Sonar.  He said that paved the way for hot plug logic.  I love this feature.  You don't even have to click to scan for new devices - it senses new audio devices automatically and asks you.

My favourite thing about SONAR 8.5 is that its progressed to a point where I don't think I'll ever need to buy another version of SONAR.

that's good for me but I guess not so good for Cakewalk. Still it had to happen one day. SONAR does all I can imagine doing with it. Good on you Cakewalk.

I like the VX-64 vocal strip in 8.5, but I've always liked the V-Vocal feature the most.  It can fix a lot of stuff and now that I've gotten it mastered, it is something I would not want to live without.

I installed S8.5PE the same day I installed Windows 7, so I don't know who to give credit, really, but I just LOVE how rock solid S8.5PE is. And how good it runs on my i7 920 @ 3.3: low latency, low CPU usage. I am working on a song and expected having to turn up the latency setting by now, but no, Sonar keeps on playing without crashing or stoppig or whatever, and CPU usage is still under 10%. I sometimes have the feeling I am dreaming. It is TOO solid to be true.

Anyway, when it comes to features: I haven't used Sonar 8.5PE long enough to be able to tell what features I like the most but up to now I like the hot plugging option (that's new to 8.5 right...? I come from 7) because every now and then I forget to turn on my FA-66. I also like the native support of jBridge (though I wish the Readme of jBridge would ellaborate more about that, but that's not a CW-fault). I also like the full Dim-Pro, but that's not new to 8.5: it's only new to me.

For the future: I think I will like the VX-64, though I haven't tried it yet. I thought I would like the Matrix view, but I found out that it's of no real use for my way of working... (I would like to see a possibility to simply put for instance specific parts of a song (using markers or not) into some sort of arranging plugin... the matrixview is too clip-oriented for me. It would be aweome if I could somehow drop specific bars into such an 'arranger' and then simply enable specific tracks to play or not and things like that, so you could easily build up a song and try various variations.) I did like the step sequencer for a short while, because I could drop EZDrummer midi loops in it for easy editing, but I found out ready made midi loops hardly ever fit my songs. And editing using a drum map is also easier after all, really.

All in all I've never been happier with any version of Sonar. And of Windows... ;)

I am a fan of Auto Scroll Lock and the Transient Tool with a touch of Aim Assist, akes it much easier to edit on the fly.

To add my snide remark: I don't need my clip gain envelopes key bound, I record proper levels, so in the odd chance I need to change gain at a clip level, I would still need to find it in a menu, because I am sure I would forget the keybinding.

Liking the hot swap of audio devices and I dig V-Vocal too.

What I dig the most is the new look of the GUI. Looks like a more professional app thn it did a few versions ago even.

Lol, you took my answer Mike.

I believe that this thread is more of an advertising/marketing tool. It's one of the first threads (currently the first) to be spotted by anyone who is new to Sonar or who is just looking into Sonar to see what it's like.
They'll see a thread about the positive side of Sonar before they get down to the complaints and issues.

Well thats just my outlook on it anyway

I haven't had that much time to mess with it yet, however, the stability and the fact that it works so nicely with Win7 is what I like. the plugs are interesting to, expecially the vocal thing and I can't wait to use it in some mixes I have going on now.

Oh and that "Shift-E" function. Dunno what it's called and it may have been introduced in S8.0 - but I've fallen in love with it!!! Splendid! Just what I've been missing

I guess in an election this would be classed as a spoiled ballot paper by now.

But FWIW I made the jump from PE7 which I chose at the time as it out-competed everything else I looked at from the core functions to the bundled 'stuff'.

I can say that the audio engine seems much more efficient but I gather most of that happened at the 8 juncture there are shortcomings for sure but less than were apparent in 7 and looking around I don't see anything else for around the same money that's stormed ahead over what I'm using now and negated the original purchase decision I made.

The bundle I got with 7 was excellent value in the first place as I had no other plugs at that point but I've got plenty of useful additions to that original stuff during the upgrade than I had, including Dim Pro which I have found a use for now I've trimmed out 7 of the 8 megs of 'stuff' it plastered over my drive.  I'd say very little of the bundle doesn't get an outing once in a while and much of it gets used regularly.

Core wise editing looped sections while rewired or otherwise doesn't go haywire like it used to occasionally, the audio engine is streets ahead better than 7's, I probably crash my machine once a week rather than once a day (and usually because I do something dumb) and I don't run out of CPU grunt nearly as often or have to regularly reboot as I did in 7 to keep it running smoothly.  The whole thing IS more robust and improved over 7 on the same machine.

As a maintenance update it would work out at £50 pa on top of the original buy in price 2 years ago, there have been 2 new contenders arrive on the DAW block, namely Props' Record and Presonus Studio One in that time both of which have far more shortcomings than I'm currently faced with and none of the other also rans have improved enough to cause me a work-flow shift so to me it was a no-brainer upgrade, even more so as I was gifted the upgrade price which after all was down to being part of the family here...

It may be unfashionable to say and at risk of coming over all fanbouy like but I'm one happy camper for an 'upgrade/update' price of less than a single plug.

So I guess after all that overall my favourite feature would be value for money.

Love the new plugs - vocal & percussion

But even more - this is rock solid for me

I've had 2 crashes with 8.5.1 since I loaded - one was with Vintage Channel - a known bug which I'm sure will be fixed with 8.5.2

The other was when I pushed my laptop too hard with a third party plug (not Sonar's fault)

Of course - now that everything works so well I'll have to go to Win7 and 64 bit, just to screw things up a little  :-)

I like the ability arpeggiate anything midi.   Not that its all that constructive, but sometimes I just want Sonar to be a toy.

Now that SONAR 8.5's been on the market for a few months, we want to know... "What's your favorite feature?"

    Hi Kate.

My favorite feature is the SFZ format and the SFZ player. I'd love to see an editor UI to make it a little easier to create my .SFZ files.

I'm not sure yet what I like the most about Sonar 8.5 but not having a stupid dongle to carry around is a big plus for me!

So far my favorite feature is how it has been rock steady stable on my Windows 7 x64 system.  I upgraded both at the same time so who gets the credit?  I tend to think - both deserve credit for great work done.  That partnership between Cakewalk and Microsoft has provided me a great platform to produce my ideas into tangible results.

    Thanks Cakewalk and Microsoft.
