Saving plug presets- Two ways/places on the plug, not the same?

I recently had to back up some user presets to do an upgrade on Aether verb.
So I never noticed this before, but there are two places many plugs have to save by name – the common looking text box (above or at the top of the main GUI typically), and whatever unique file' system tab a plug GUI has, I guess I presumed they were 'parallel methods but apparently they are not.
At first I thought it was just an Aether verb problem that I was fixing, but I tried this same test on a Sonitus plug; Save a preset in the upper one (outside the main GUI), then do a file search, and it is not found.
Got the verb presets sorted out ok by going back to the source projects where they live and copied the names from the one box proper like to the Aether's file tool. Update done, > new verb, cool'. Done.

Along the way though there was one where I had used a ' / ' in the name. That got spit back (as it should) 'illegal.
That hints to me these 'saves I had were not even file names? But 'search can also look for even text within a file right?
I'm just curious if anyone can tell me what's going on here?
