Where do Effects I create get Saved / VST Folder? / Other?

I just tried to do a search on this. Spent several minutes and got impatient. If this has already asked...my bad.

Let's say I add an audio track. Then I add a reverb effect to the track (let's say one of the preset Cakewalk reverbs). I don't so much like the preset reverb so I tweak it and save it as "my reverb".  I save by just clicking the little disk icon (it doesn't ask me where I want it saved / I'm assuming into the default directory).

Where does it save it to? I ask this question beacuse I just built a new pc and transferred over some of my templates. The custom effect(s) I made did not transfer during the standard install (of course because I made them). I have the old hard drive and I'm assuming that the custom saved effects are there somewhere and all I have to do is put them into the new computer.

Many hours of creating the template will be saved if I can import the saved effects to the proper directory.

It's up to the individual plugin as to where and how presets are saved.

For most DX plugins, including the Sonitus reverb (and the Sonitus effects generally), presets are stored in the registry. They are referenced by the plugin's CLSID and contain binary data that is not easily user-editable.

    If you want to take a look at them, open RegEdit and go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Cakewalk Music Software\ActiveMovie\Presets\{xxxxx}
Where {xxxx} is the CLSID of the plugin.

(Don't ask me why presets are stored under "ActiveMovie". I'd guess there is some historical story there.)

Most VST plugins have a different scheme. Their presets are stored in binary files under the Windows file system under documents and settings\{user_name}\application data.

With Ozone, for example, presets are stored in a file under documents and settings\{user_name}\Application Data\iZotope\Ozone4. Voxengo products store theirs under documents and settings\{user_name}\Voxengo\Audio Plugins.

In all cases, the presets are binary data that is not easily user-editable outside SONAR. If you're looking to port them over to another computer, you can do that by copying the documents and settings\{user_name}\application data\ folders.

All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to.

    Thanks for the reply.

So it looks like that if I used DX plugins (which I did for most) the path is not easy to import from one computer to another (I don't like going into RegEdit). Didn't know it was that difficult.

I've seen and transferred Ozone ones in the past (and I thought it was that simple).

Didn't know there was a file saving difference between the VST and DX.

Thanks for the info (maybe I'll try the regedit path / I really don't want to dial in all the effects again on this computer / I guess I could always write down each effect setting and transfer over manually????).

Thank you for that Bitflipper. I had a question along similar lines here
[link=http://forum.cakewalk.com/tm.aspx?m=1878058&high]http://forum.cakewalk.com..aspx?m=1878058&high[/link] regarding the fact that there are indeed (at least on some plugs) two preset systems. You have now filled in another part of the picture.

Cgfcgf- here is something I found here at the forum that might be usefull using the Plug-in Manager (-sorry I lost the source thread ref.

"There IS a way to backup your plugin presets, and you put the backups anywhere you want.

Open the plugin manager, and select one of the categories of plugins (left pane.)

On a per-plugin basis, it works like this:

Click on a plugin that has presets (middle pane) and right under that pane, where it says Cakewalk Plug-in Presets, it will display the number of presets it's found for that plugin.

If you click the Manage button, you can actually see the individual plugins and rename them.

Click the Export button, and you can save all of the presets for that plugin in a single file, with an .spp extension, anywhere you want. Give the file a name that clearly identifies the plugin -- the names of the individual presets aren't an issue; names are saved with the other params in the spp/

To reload those presets, you click Import, find the spp file, an ddouble lick it to open it. The presets will be assigned to the proper plugin; there is no need to select the plugin first, as presets can only be assigned to the plugin they belong to.

You can also save presets for multiple plugins within a category (e.g., VST Audio Effects) by choosing the category, and then selecting all of the presets in that category (using regular Windows multi-select methods.) The total number of presets found for the selected plugins will be displayed (although the Manage button will be grayed out.)

You can then Export all of these in a single file. As above, when you Import that file the presets will be assigned to the appropriate plugin.

You do this for all of the plugin categories -- there doesn't seem to be a way to do a single multi-cat/multi-plug Export.

The location of plugin layouts is set on the Options-Global-Folders page. You can set locations for other things you might want to save as well, e.g., Template, Drum Maps, and so on. I've set most of those to use the same Template folder, which I store under my main Project folder, so everything is together. Like I said in a previous post, I try to avoid putting anything on that's actually "mine" on the c: drive. "

Interesting that of the two plugs I've played with in this -Aether verb and Sonitus, in the use of each of their two preset systems, on one plug only the plug's dedicated' save system's presets show up in the Plug Manager', while with the other plug only the 'common upper' saved presets appear in the Plug Manager. Weird. I don't have the full picture but between knowing that, and finding the PlugManager info it's enough to get it done. At worst, resaving them to the other slot.
