Phantom VS patch list?
Greetings! Is there such a thing as a published patch list for the Fantom VS hardware built into the 700-R? Sonar seems to understand it -- I guess that means that they provide an instrument definition, but I just upgraded to Jammer 6 Pro, too, and although it finds the Fantom VS MIDI port and sents notes, the patch selection is inconsistent; sometimes it thinks the VS is General Midi and assigns the right sound, but sometimes it isn't even close. I'm also not sure I understand the behavior in Sonar itself. If I have an existing MIDI track, and for it's "output" I chose Fantom VS MIDI, then that uses the 700-R hardware, right? But what if I "insert" a soft synth Fantom VS as an instrument track? Does that load a software synth instance of the VS, or just it just patch to the hardware VS in the 700? The latter is the only way I can bring up the Fantom VS Editor. If I try the same method on a MIDI Fantom VS track, I just get General MIDI choices. Confusing, right? BTW, IS the Fantom VS hardware General MIDI? -doug-

I haven't found a published Patch list and I'm not sure if it's the same patch list as the Fantom G series keyboard workstations. I downloaded the manual for the G series keyboards and have been meaning to compare the lists there with the menus in the Fantom VS. I haven't seen an instrument definition for it either. The GM1 and GM2 instrument lists probably don't match the patch lists in the Fantom VS. I generally turn off the Receive PC-( Patch Change ) messages button on the Midi page of the Fantom on all 16 channels and turn on the Patch remain button which I beleive is in the Common page. This stops your controller from changing patchs in the Fantom. It doesn't matter whether you use a simple instrument track or a split Midi source track. The Fantom soft synth that installs in the project is the same and uses the Fantom hardware in the V 700 R. You must install the Fantom soft synth in the project to use it, other wise yes you get general Midi. As to whether the Fantom is GM1 or GM2, I would assume it's capable of both and based on GM2 but as I said above, to use the Fantom patches turn off the Patch Change messages from your controller. The note characteristics of the instrument on your controller will still transmit, ie: whether you're using a piano or organ or whatever and will affect the Fantom patch in terms of attack, expression, decay, etc. That's pretty general but I hope it helps. The Fantom can be very complicated.

I have both an X7 and the XR rack, so I don't have much call to fool with the VS, but at first glance it appeared to me to have the identical patch library to my Fantom-X. I won't swear to it, though, since I haven't looked at it in a while. You can probably find a pdf of the Fantom-X patch list on Roland's website to compare and see. Cheers! Mike

Mike The Fantom X was a predecessor to the Fantom G series wasn't it?

Yes, the X series is the generation before the G. Which seems rather strange...ARX compatibility like the G, and yet a patch list that seems damn near identical to the X. Hmmm....

Hey Zelmo, I just downloaded an .ins instrument definition for the Fantom VS from the Cakewalk site. It wasn't there previously so it must be new. I installed it in the instrument definitions and redirected the Fantom VS to it and the sounds cleared up quite a bit on the Fantom. Definitely worth putting in.

You have to put in the instrument definitions in Sonar. I've been busy lately with other things so I will have to get back to youwith a path. Basically you open Options-Instruments and put the saved ins. file in Instrument definitions. Take a look there and I will get back to you.

Hi Crg, I know what you mean about being busy. I've been busy trying to avoid getting ripped off by Nigerian scammers on Ebay... I was interested in your comment "I installed it in the instrument definitions and redirected the Fantom VS to it and the sounds cleared up quite a bit on the Fantom. Definitely worth putting in. " I guess I should RTFM ! So let me do some research into how instrument definition files work and I'll try and figure it out... Cheers and thanks, Louis
