Cover of Gimmie Shelter (with Julibee)

Julibee did the backing vox on this Star Spangled Grahampa (live recording) take on the Stones classic.

I overdubbed the MIDI piano.

We did this one slow on purpose.

Sound pretty good but the drums are not too good.

Sounds nice to me.  Good guitar tones.  Mix is good.  Juli sings awesome (of course).  Her vox seem a bit delayed in the mix- like they need to nudge to the left a few ms.

    Nice vox bapu

No, not me on Vox. Only bass and overdubbed MIDI piano.

Yeah, the drummer was a bit rusty. Had not played his drums in just about two years.

DOH!  I probably oughta poke around in here a little more often.... My 2 year old has an aversion to me listening to music while she's watching kiddie junk on TV, and she gets mad when I put on my headphones.  I'm hoping it's just a phase.....

Thanks, though.  All of you.  That was freaking FUN - the one and only time I ever really got to wail with a full band.  Loved. It.

The guitars are great, very close to the real thing in parts.  Jules vocals are sensational, she's hitting those high notes perfectly.  Yo've got a kind of jagger voice, albeit much deeper.

I kind of liked the looseness of this, but tightened up a bit it would sound better.

Overall this is a great cover, liked it a lot.

    That's not me singing.
    I'm no singer.
The CHB says I'm barely a bass player.
I played bass and piano on this one.

    Thanks.

    Who did the lead vocal?

All the musicians (except for the guests, i.e. my son, Julibee, Nontat & No How on the various tracks) were the guys I played in High School with. None of them use SONAR or around here. His name is Tom.

On the other tunes where there are harmonies and/or backing vocals (On The Way Home & I Got A Line On You) it was Tom and Mike (Tom's brother).

I payed bass and Ron played drums.

This is one of my favorite Stones tunes!! Your version to me has a completely different feel than the original. Nice to put your own stamp on it! I was loving everything except the drums - I would have personally given it a more driving beat (some 8th note hi-hit, etc) to drive it home and reinforce that tension that the song conveys. The drum beat he's playing is kinda clunky and doesn't really get into a groove. I think he's just trying to do too much. Just my $0.02!!

Nice job on them high notes, Julianna!

    Thanks Dave.

It was a live recording. Ergo a live drummer.

I couldn't do much about changing him. Well, I could but not worth the effort.

Julianna, your contribution is definitely the strongest element in this song. Nice Grace Slick feel going on there. Don't be surprised if you start getting lots of pleas from others to add some vox to their tunes, too. I may be one of them.

Yes, there are severe timing issues here. Some careful nudging is definitely called for, and not just on the BV. It seems to always be a problem with remote collaborations. At least, it has been on every collab I've contributed to, even one that was mixed by a big-name pro.

All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to.

Slightly OT, but I don't see that on our CHB tracks unless we use mp3's (which we try to avoid). We ship 44.1K/24-bit stems.

I'm not sure what happened on this one with Jules. Maybe I sent her an mp3 rough mix? My son says mp3s add a little space at the beginning of the file. I've never confirmed that but I have seen mp3s drift over time.

Again for the record, this was a jam recorded straight into SONAR with no click. Yeah we were all rusty. The drummer had not played drums in over two years. None of us had played together in over 25 years.

No excuses, just some fun recorded for posterity and brightened by Jules contribution.

Hey, Ed... Curious kitty that I am, I checked.  I think we DID work off of an mp3 (you sent me one, anyway).  I'm sure that's what I used, not knowing any better.  If the "drag" is mostly on my vox, that may be the problem.
