Rebuild Layers: The Weirdest Bug Ever
I had a strange thing come up today. Was working on two vocal tracks when all of a sudden one of them stopped playing. No mute, no clip mute, and it was routed to the same buss as everything else and everything else was playing. I tried routing to other outputs, no love. I tried solo, nothing. Mute/unmute, nothing. I was able to play the clips outside of Sonar so the audio was definitely in place. When I tried to bounce the clips to a new clip, the end result was total silence. Finally, I copied the clips to a new track with Ctrl-Shift drag and the clips played fine on the new track. I have since found out that doing a Track | Layers | Rebuild Layers makes that track play again. What does layers have to do with muting the entire track? Anyone else seen this one? I had been doing a lot of clip muting (during comping) on another track just before this one went DOA, and the last thing I remember doing before the track went silent was that I changed the track name. Not sure it's related. But the fact the Rebuild Layers made the track start playing again really makes me wonder...?

I have found layers to be extremely buggy since moving to 8.5x I have rebuilt layers then had them magically reappear (there is something subliminal in that word). It was very troublesome one night while trying to edit multiple drum takes - Each time I tried to slide a group of clips over the timeline, the layers would pop back up. I basically gave up because the customer was standing over my shoulder. I haven't attempted it since moving to win7x64 so I don't know if it was an install problem.

There are definitely some layer bugs. I stumble into them often. However, when you mentioned sliding some clips over, that is one that I've hit TOO many times. Another interesting one is when you click on the track # in the track header and select the entire track, then do something like quantize it - all of a sudden some layers you thought were gone, or had slip edited - well, say hello dolly Some of these bugs have been around a long time, btw. They're not new to me, at least. And, rebuilding layers doesn't always rebuild.

That was exactly the behavior I was talking about. Funny I never ran into it before. My workflow hasn't changed that much.

Thanks for confirming that I'm not alone with this issue. I've reported it as a bug and we'll see what happens from here.

CW support speaks: "Thank you for your report. This is most likely a system-specific or configuration issue and not a defect with your Cakewalk program." So they're telling me that issue with Rebuild Layers really isn't happening? what the...? Did they even open the sample I sent?

Update: Somehow - and I don't know how - one lane of the multiple lanes in a track got solo'd, which implicitly muted every other lane for that track. I didn't even think to check for a lane mute, but on subsequent advice from support I checked the bundle that I sent them and sure enough, there was one lane solo'd. Rebuilding the layers rebuilds the lane mute and solo settings, which I could see being something of a problem if I actually was using lane mutes or solos intentionally. But that was my issue. Lane solo. Still feels weird.

I was recording some midi stuff over the weekend. When I tried deleting notes in the piano roll view, they kept reappearing. Back in track view, set to show layers, I found up to 6 layers all with the same notes. Very weird.

I wrote about this before and Susan Hooked it up , About Magnetic Strength , Works better with some fiddiling but still not 100% all the time( if I have a clip and I want to copy drag forward or backwards in the time line, Especially while during play back, and lets say I have snap set to half notes and if I copy drag it, It dosn't snap it to the half notes , I have to zoom in more grab the clip again and then it will place it correct, or stop the transport, or just click bunch of times... Thank God for Numbers..

Ba _Midi Thanks again for the tip about Alt hold while in media Browser, to get the loops to play in time.. and Yes Sonar 9 needs a toggle switch for it, My finger was getting a cramp today. I really thought loop explore had a built in feature, Maybe it was the loops I was using possably Elasticish loops of some sort .

Thank God for Numbers.. I rarely copy/drag clips during playback, but when I do I definitely make sure to be zoomed in good. I do think there are some bugs in that sense. However, 2 things I do that help: 1 ... I use the AIM Assist, and, 2... I setup my view so that the clips pane has the grid lines behind the clips so I can see more clearly where I'm trying to land.
