midi keyboard connecting to v studio 100 does not make sound in computer
I have been able to connect the keyboard and turn on the proper function mode it requires to hook up through midi connection but my sonar will not record the sound that I try to play. The keyboard makes no noise and is connected to vs 100 which is connected through usb to computer.. any help is greatly appreciated thank you.

are you trying to record the sound of the keyboard (audio) and not the performance (MIDI)? If so you would need to connect the audio outputs of the keyboard to the audio inputs on the VS-100. Robin

I am trying to record the sounds the keys stroke with my computer sonar in the instruments fx patch.. Do you mean that I am supposed to record the loop with the piano and then send it to the computer? I thought Midi was what allowed the computer to read the code the keyboard makes when sounds are used.

Just clarifying, does " with my computer sonar in the instruments fx patch" mean you are trying to play a soft synth with the midi keyboard? Have you inserted a soft synth? Which one? Regards Mick

Dope Logic Production Anybody got any more advice??? Its very difficult to give advise from the information given to date. Can you be more specific about your physical set up. Also can you walk us through the logic of how you set up the project, what synths you insert, how you insert them, what midi settings you have globally, etc. The more specific you are the better we can help you. Regards Mick

I own a V studio 100 that comes with sonar vs.. sonar vs comes with fx packages and instrument packages. I plug in the v studio 100 to my computer then I go into sonar.. I can use the v studio to hook up multiple mics, guitars, and so on. It also comes with a pair of midi in and midi out plugs. I have a yamaha keyboard that also has midi in midi out plugs. So I bought a chord that will connect two midi devices. Yet when I plug the midi piano into the v studio 100 it will not play any sounds in sonar or in any of its instrument packages. I cant open a new track insert piano and then play my piano to make the sounds that I want to use to make the beat. I have changed the settings on the keyboard to let the computer work on it and changed settings to sound the internal tone generator to send sound through midi but cannot get my computer to recognize the keyboard plugged into the v studio 100

Since you're not making progress, let's try review the basics just to make sure we're all communicating. Your Yamaha keyboard has two major parts inside of it: a keyboard controller and a sound generator. The keyboard sends note on and note off signals to the sound generator that makes the piano/strings/etc. sounds. The note signals have no sound of their own. They are used only to trigger a sound generator. MIDI connects between the keyboard and the sound module. When you press a key, a MIDI 'note on' message is sent to the MIDI Out port. If you connect the MIDI out of the keyboard to VS-100, you will have to also set up something to act as a sound generator. The MIDI In connector on your keyboard connects to the sound generator. If you send note messages to MIDI In, it will trigger the sound generator inside the keyboard. In your situation, you have two choices: One is to send the audio out from the keyboard (from its sound generator) to the VS-100 and record it in an audio track. The other is to send the MIDI Out of the keyboard to the MIDI In of the VS-100 and record in a MIDI or instrument track. If you go the MIDI route, you will need to connect it to a sound generator. This can be either a soft synth running in Sonar or an external sound generator like your Yamaha. What I've just wrote is highly simplified as MIDI can send signals that do lots of other things, but for now, let's focus on basic signal flow. Does what I've described make sense? If you're new to Sonar, my advice is that you start out with recording audio from your keyboard. It's a lot simplier which means that there is a lot less that can go wrong. When you've got audio recording down, you can start working with MIDI.

So I do know a little bit about midi and that was very helpful. It was a very plain and simple layout of how the connection should work. Is there a program inside of sonar vs that is on my computer which can be the sound generator? I will try and record a project using the keyboard but as long as its available on my computer I would like to use the computers instruments. I have many instrument packages that came with sonar. They play loops but will not generate sound from keyboard keys.. I will try and make sure that my midi settings are all right for receiving sound. Thanks for all the advice. Hopefully I will be able to get it working. I am new to this but Im also very serious so thanks for the help.

Glad to hear that this was helpful. Sonar VS has a lot of "sound generators". They are called by several terms that mean the same thing: soft synth (software synthesizer), software instrument, or plug-in. Easiest way to get to them in VS is to insert an Instrument track. To the right of the menu you'll see all of the soft synths that are installed. More than enough to get you started. Forums are good for solving problems, but you need to do some reading on your own. There is a "Sonar VS Getting Started" manual on the Sonar VS CD that you should read. (Not the same as the printed "Getting Started" manual.) It's in the Documentation folder on the CD with copies in several languages. I don't think that the Sonar VS installer puts a copy on your computer, so you'll have to copy it manually. I'd read the entire manual, but if you want to dive into MIDI, read Tutorial 4 "Playing and Recording Software Instruments". Good luck.

I had this same problem. If you are using a keyboard that is a keyboard and not soley a midi controller or an upper end korg or something, you will not be able to get the v-studio to read you're midi instrument, I was using a yamaha prs with the ua-25ex and it was working just fine as a midi controller untill I upgraded to the v-studio and than I switched to a emu exboard 61 and it has worked like a charm except for the stupid dropouts which are probably because of my computer which i need to update
