I'm now thinking of getting this - Hard Case?

Hi there

I am currently seriously considering getting a V-Studio 700c.

I already have pres and interface taken care of, hence just the console required.

I had considered the Mackie Control with Extenders at one point and had even thought of a Tascam DM-3200/4800. However, the latter's drivers, support and compatibility with Sonar gave me the creeps when I searched on here and I don't think I have space for something that big anyway. Hell...I don't even think I have the space for the Mackies and 2-3 extenders. Therefore, I concluded I'd be better off going with the unit (V-Studio 700c) which is made for my software of choice (Sonar). Makes sense!

Although my home setup is forever growing (as I'm pretty sure yours is too), I'm even struggling to fit the V-Studio 700c into the equation without changing desks. I may consider this later down the line. My current desk is as pictured below:

My intentions at present are to only use the V-Studio 700c when I'm mixing - or tracking other folks and pop it away when not in use. When using it, I was thinking of moving the Juno-G keyboard and putting the V-Studio 700c in its place with a couple of blocks of wood on the computer keyboard's slide out tray to support the VS700c's projected overhang (6-7"). The tray seems quite sturdy and should accommodate approximately 1/3 of the unit's overhang. It doesn't seem to mind me leaning on it too much anyway.

I have a couple of questions.

  1. Is there a purpose made hard case on the market which the V-Studio 700c can be stored in when not in use? If not, I guess I could find one suitable if need be.
  2. Does anyone know of any good desks out there which would assist me in avoiding storing the V-Studio 700c when not in use enabling me to have it set up permanently? My current desk is 49" length x 32" depth (slide tray out). Ideally, I would like to try and  keep within this. Any sensible desks out there?

Thanks in advance

The V Studio 700 Console becomes an integrated part of Sonar as a controller when you add it to your setup, whatever your setup is. Your interfaces and other Midi devices will appear as inputs in Sonar. You will want to leave the Console connected to your DAW. It is not a device you want to unplug and store in a case when you're not using it. It works equally well as a mixer and controller when you are recording in Sonar or an editing controller when you are mixing-mastering.

Hi,

I don't have a V Studio but I do use a control surface and I'd really recommend getting yourself a sturdier desk.

I have a cheap one from IKEA that i've modified with a couple of monitor stands and it makes the difference - don't go for a computer workstation one but rather a plain old desk. There's loads of room for the surface and my keyboard.

You might even be able to salvage some of your old desk and use that for the monitors?

It seems like a good investment when you're going to use it as a home for your three grand interface!

Thanks Crg.

I'm waiting on a new DAW which is going to go to the base of my 22u rack. I have no choice but to store the rack away just now when not in use - space issues etc. Therefore, a V-Studio 700c would not be hooked up all the time anyway - regardless of where it remains. It's just the way my situation is - set up today, tidied away tomorrow.  Ideally I'd like everything to be hooked up ready to roll all the time but this is just not possible due to not supporting my current recording mobility requirements along with living space.

There is, I guess, one way around it where I could rack my DAW in a 4u case under my desk. I could then just run a firewire cable from this over to the rack (DAW >>> interface in rack) when using it. I was going to have to run a DVI monitor cable over as it was (monitor >>> DAW in rack) and would no longer need to. Basically I'd be looking at running a cable regardless. This new DAW under the desk situation would free up 4u's worth of currently booked spaces in my 22u rack which I could prudently use (yeh right - laugh) to buy one or two pieces of gear.

Cheers for pitching in. Appreciate it.

I'm going to seriously look in to this. I'm totally aware that all these workstation things out there tend to lack space for musical hardware. I'll do my homework and choose diligently.

Thanks mate. I appreciate it.

Zipp, yer not hearing me. You do not want to keep connecting and disconnecting the V 700 Console.
Granted , you can do it if you want to-need to, but you're just making your life difficult. If you are using it on the road you basically have no choice. But if you just have a thing about space and changing your parameters you are making your DAW life difficult. As I told you before, the V 700 C is a master controller for Sonar. If you don't disconnect everything from your DAW everyday, don't disconnect and store the V 700 C because you think you have to according to your ways. Peace, I'm done.

Thanks Craig

I did kinda get what you were saying and do realise the importance of a constant connection. I've now figured out a way to have my setup hooked up at all times.

Also...The whole top part of my desk, the top shelf and platform where my monitors are, dismantles from the rest of the desk quite easily. Therefore, I can build some stands for the monitors as Jamie suggested.

Great!!! I feel a V-Studio 700c purchase coming on in July.

Thanks
