Session Drummer: Change where it looks for data
I just reinstalled Cakewalk's Session Drummer 2 Hip Hop Pack. The install has no custom configuration options; it's all automatic. My VST plugins folder is in the "root" Programs folder, not in the Cakewalk sub-folder. Sonar knows this as its where my Global setting is for VST plugins, too. The Session Drummer 2 & 3 folders are there with the .dll files and all content as subfolders, including the Hip-Hop Pack programs and, I believe, other content. HOWEVER, this expansion install pack MUST use the Cakewalk default VST folder of "C:\Programs\Cakewalk\VSTplugins" internally to look for content. I don't have that folder on my drive. When I select one of the Hip Hop programs to load I get the "can't find the ...[name every .wav file it's looking for to make up the kit]" message. The message shows the default "C:Programs\Cakewalk\VSTplugins" folder as the path it's looking to. I want to tell it where to look to find the content but can't. I've done several registry searches using all the search words I can think of to find the folder setting Session Drummer looks in for content but have found nothing that works. I found another thread on a similar topic with some advice I hoped would work but it didn't (just in case someone knows that thread, my registry search found NO "filecach.lst" results). Does anyone know how to tell Session Drummer where to find content and direct it to the right place? Thanks in advance. Richard

Session Drummer is one of those VSTi's that you should NOT muck around with the default installation directories...Believe it or not, there is a rhyme & reason for how they're structured but I don't feel like typing out 10 pages to explain it...

Actually, I didn't muck around with the default installation directories, at least not yet, though that caution is worth noting. Session Drummer works fine with everything EXCEPT the Hip Hop Expansion pack which allows no customization of its install parameters. AND it installed the files in the correct, per my Sonar Global Setting, VST folder. If I load a Hip Hop Expansion pack program it just won't load the kits properly as it looks in the "C:Program Files\Cakewalk\VSTplugins" folder - which doesn't exist on my drive.

32 bit. And what I would REALLY like is to use the expansion pack in Session DRummer 3. But one bridge at a time.

My Sonar install asked me where I want to install VST's, if I remember correctly; nothing screwy needed. Every other VST works fine, including Session Drummer, EXCEPT for this expansion pack which has an automatic install only and installs in the correct Session Drummer 2 folder.

Session Drummer should be installed in C:\Program Files\Cakewalk\VST Plugins...There should be several sub-folders (Contents, Resources, Documentation, etc.,) within the main folder...Within the "Contents" folder reside several other sub-folders that include the .sfz files, the .wav files, the kit files, the .prog files, etc.,)....

I think I'll email tech support about this. It's a Cakewalk branded product of Smart Loops content. And what I really want is to use it in Session Drummer 3, though I'll still have to get around the same issue, regardless. The automatic install parameters have some "gaps" in their data assumptions - if one chooses a different default VST location other than the Cakewalk default.

Session Drummer 2 & 3 are installed in "C:Program Files\VSTplugins" with every other VST I have. Again, EVERYTHING works fine EXCEPT this expansion pack.

Session Drummer 2 (and 3) locates its contents via a registry key... HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Cakewalk Music Software\SessionDrummer2\Contents Folder This defines the path where the "Contents" directory resides. Note that this is where Session Drummer looks for a directory named "Contents"...meaning...you can change the location of the Contents directory, but you can't change it's name. (On my system, the Contents directory is in C:\Music\Plugins\VSTi\Cakewalk\Session Drummer 3.) I'm thinking your best bet is to let the Hip Hop thing install where it thinks it must...and then move it to where the registry tells Session Drummer where it should be...inside the Contents folder...wherever it is on your system.

Dan, I found the exact paths you described for both Session Drummer 2 & 3 and the paths are correctly named for my default VST folder - the one this expansion pack will not look in.

This sounds vaguely familiar, so here's a long shot. Try pressing [F5] with the SD browser open and see if that helps. I might be thinking of another synth, but it can't hurt. -Susan

F5 will indeed refresh the browser, but if the "destination folder" is somewhere else other than where CW/SD expects it to be I don't think that will accomplish anything...

That's what sounded familiar -- that the browser didn't auto-refresh, even though you'd think it would after installing a new pack. As I said, it can't hurt! -Susan

OK, PROBLEM SOLVED! Rather than fight with Sonar, I: 1) Created a VSTplugins folder under Cakewalk in the Programs folder. 2) Moved the Session Drummer 2 folder & all its contents from my default vstplugins folder (where I think I may have manually moved it long ago, probably having something to do with my problems). 3) Using the Cakewalk Plug-in Manager, added the new VST folder I created within the Cakewalk folder. 4) Rescanned all VST's. 5) STILL DIDN'T WORK! 6) So I took Dan's cue from above, used Regedit to change the contents path to my newly created folder, AND... 7) All works perfectly! Interestingly, Session Drummer 2 has disappeared as an available plug-in, which is fine with me, even though its .dll file is still in the Session Drummer 2 folder. Also, when I "F5" refresh my program list from within Session Drummer 3 the Hip Hop expansion pack is now in the top level hierarchy of choices. Cakewalk's internal tools placed all the expansion pack programs right in front of my face even though they are in a different directory from the Session Drummer 3 folder. Thanks, Cakewalk! Thanks to you for all the assistance! Richard

Papa2005, I changed the default folder because I use Ableton Live more than Sonar and I wanted a "neutral" folder location, with at least one less level of folder depth, for all my plugs. I use several of Cakewalk's instruments & audio effects in Live, too. And most 3rd party plugs have a Steinberg folder default and I don't want to manage multiple VST folders if I can avoid it.

That's the kinda attitude that creates the problems you've been experiencing...Some things are best left not to be mucked about with...In your case, it was Session Drummer...As I mentioned in an earlier post, there is a "rhyme and reason" behind CW's VST plugin structure...It's best left alone (even if you are using other DAW apps)...

I have experienced almost no problems with my single VST plugins folder. I figure the various product applications installers ask me where I want to install their plug because they care what I think. Session Drummer 3 works fine in Live - though I rarely use it - as do most of Cakewalk's instruments and effects - if they're VST's. True Pianos won't because it's a Cakewalk only special deal. I am actually grateful to Cakewalk for their rather "open systems" approach in allowing many of their instruments and effects to be used outside Sonar. It adds value to their products and helps justify, to me, continuing to re-up with each new version of Sonar.

I remember now... If I have all my VST's in one directory structure (including VSTi's) then WaveLab has a cow when it scans the VSTi's. So I had to put all my instrument plugs in a separate directory structure. Besides that...I really don't like the "dogpile" organization and would rather keep things nicely categorized.

I installed Digital Sound Factory Acoustic Kits for Session Drummer 3 and it did not show up in the SD3 Program Browser. I pressed F5 and it refreshed. I had no idea that it would do that. Now I know that I can move a program or create a new folder and just press F5. I installed the free Platinum Samples Legends Kit 3 a while back and it was bugging me that it was automatically installed in the Acoustic folder with the original SD3 programs. Thanks Susan G and Papa!
