COULD I SYNC AUDIO (RECORDED ON SD CARD) TO MIDI? midi slave/master type relation
Please help! With a sequencer being used as MIDI MASTER connected to the V-Studio 100 used as MIDI SLAVE, could there be a setup that would allow me to cue in the backup vocals I have recorde in Audio/WAV format on the SD card (perhaps through SMPTE, MTC, MMC, or any format at all) in STANDALONE mode - NO USB - PC/DAW CONNECTED. I'm very familiar with MIDI sequencing but have never tried to sync audio except using a DAW. I'm trying to take the PC out of the equation though for a simpler, more compact live setup. I bought the v-studio for this reason and because of the motorized controller. I want to use the following equipment only for live performance backing tracks: I have no idea if this is even possible ... please help!

Hate to be the messenger, but the current VS-100 firmware doesn't support anything close to this. Best you can do for live performance is to use the footswitch on the VS-100. Unfortunately there's no playlist functionality. (Even the SonicCell has playlists ...)

Thank you so much for your reply MurMan! Do you know if I could accomplish what I am trying to do with the SonicCell? I hadn't heard of it before and I got this from the website: "SonicCell can play back WAV, AIFF, and MP3 files. It evens plays Standard MIDI Files!" What I need to know is ... can it play both at the same time/together? In the same way a DAW does? Is there any device that would do this? I know the Fantom X does but it's a little out of my price range and I already have a good MIDI controller keyboard I really like to use.

I don't have any great suggestions, julliac. The basic problem is that both the VS-100 and Sonic Cell operate very differently in standalone mode vs computer mode. In standalone, they can record/playback to their removable flash memory (SD for VS-100 and USB for SC). In computer mode, they act as I/O devices for the computer but can't control playback of their local files. It's almost as if the firmware was written by two different dev teams. The SC can playback only one file at a time, so no simultaneous audio and MIDI playback. I think I'd reconsider using a small laptop instead of the RA-95. It doesn't take much horsepower to playback a small Sonar project with just a few MIDI and 16/44KHz audio tracks. (You might need to try a few out to make sure it works for your performance requirements.) There are other programs that are better suited for live performance than Sonar that would probably be able to use the VS-100.

Thanks again! That's definitely the route I'm headed but was thinking of setting my laptop DAW program (SONAR) as slave ... if I have any stubborn latency issues or if my laptop acts up I can just shut it down and go without the audio parts (backup vocals) whle the midi sequences keep running (takes out some of the risk of a BIG EMBARASSMENT while performing live. If there is any other DAW better suited to live performance? I'd be glad to know.

I agree that you need a backup plan when you've got a problem with your gear, but the approach of using the laptop as the slave seems backwards. Most PC software assumes that it is the user interface because the PC has the screen and keyboard. Why not use the PC as the master and bring the RA-95 along for backup? I'm a Sonar fan, but it really isn't great for live performance. It's too cumbersome to select and load a new project. And you seldom want to edit a project live. Check out Ableton Live and MIDI Maestro. You can google 'midi live performance software' for more choices.

You might look into outboard samplers. Depending on the length of the vocals you wanted to queue, you would need to make sure you had the storage. I have an Akai S5000 from the old days that would do it. It was very expensive and it is a 2U rack monster--so it would only work best for travel in a rack. Some of the high-end synths out there have sampler features, but again, you need to see what kind of storage space you would need.
