Where in the signal pass do effects reside in HSXL7?

Couple days ago, after studing Abbey Road Studios web site and Studio 2 specifics, I turned to [now free] Cakewalk Stage modeler (FX3 package) to model Beatles mics positioning in Studio 2 and get modeled studio echos/reverberation/voice. I have melodies of about 1/3 Beatles catalog (70+ songs) as my original-lyrics songs in Russian, so, I need to approach this matter systematically, as I already planned my first 26 songs album, all on Beatles melodies.

While I am not yet satisfied with the result of the combined mix, the first day experimentation was good: some instruments (like drums and bass) have clear (yet subtle) sound dimension/ambience improval (to me ear).

My question is:

Where in the Home Studio 7XL "virtual wiring" scheme (or signal path) do effects stay. I am talking about the [effects+] option that we see to the left of the Track view (when particular track Controls are unfolded)

(I realize there is an effects send [with an effects return to a bus] with pre and postfader options available for every audio track at HS Console view; I also noted a scheme at HS help menu, however, its is not clear for me)

what do you mean do they "stay?"

if you have an FX in the FX bin then your full signal is passed through that FX before leaving the track to go to the track's designated output.

if you don't put the FX in the FX bin, but use a send, then whatever amount of the signal you choose to go to the send bus will go - this is chosen by the slider on the send.

for example, if you have no FX in the FX bin, but set up a send from the track to a bus, and put the FX in the FX bin of the bus, then you set that track's main fader to be -3dB and set up the send to be POST fader and set the send fader to be -3dB, then you're effectively only sending -6dB signal to the send bus.  if you set it up as PRE fader, then you're sending -3dB to the send bus.

    Hi,

If you open the help in Home Studio and search "Signal Flow" you will get a signal flow diagram showing the entire path of an audio signal within the Home Studio application including where the FX bin sits and what each meter is showing.

    Hope this helps,

Here is info on pre and post settings as pre and post are the same for every mixer and program. just learn what they do and you can apply it to any mixer or mixing view.

Thanks for helpful notes. I beleive I am on a right pass with modeling Abbey Road Studio 2 sound, my calculations of initial and late reflections indicate its' acoustic and Beatles performance and mics positioning in the studio corner have scientific grounds. My first processed this way project (although having my outdated vocal) is on Beatles melody of "Its' only love" (for those interested to hear it see the bottom file 20100521... in the list of my mp3 files at Google Docs, my simple redirection address is http://mp3.rusradio.me ). I'm thinking whether to buy or not to buy (a bit expensive) Abbey Road Studios plugin called Brilliance pack:
    http://www.abbeyroadplugins.com/product_about.aspx?pid=41016

Anyway I need more research first (like puting light transformer next to mics, see Abbey Road info on a nature of one Brilliance EQ  effect ))), my one day February 2010 play with my vocal (using multiband compressor, no EQ, followed by sonogram analysis) vs Beatles vocal of "I want to hold your hand", German version (where it is possible to isolate vocal) again is encouraging, this is available as an mp3 where Beatles vocal passages are followed by mine (this is the second file starting with the date 20100214 in the list at the same web address, fisrt file with the same date is my complete russian lyrics song, not a translation), its is also available as youtube video here:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s8AMQhWcELQ

As a note my recordings are educational and private, written and sung for a particular living person(s) and do not serve to entertain others, and therefore meet fair use or fair dealing provisions of the copyright law(s), the results of this research based recordings accompanied by digital audio will be therefore published in a scholarly publication as soon as the research is complete.

Cakewalk, thanks for your practical research excellence and fantastic tools, such as FX3 Stage modeler and FX2 Tape and Amp Simulators!

CJays, thanks for helpful reading references. While I read and realised before many of the issues you described, your excellent writing opened more questions.

One of them is the following:

On my mixer I usually have the following settings for my pair of stereo condenser mics:

Trim: +35dB (rotary knob scale is from +10 to +60dB) - similar for the 2nd channel
Level: +9dB (rotary with maximum value of +15dB) - similar for the second channel
Master: +6dB (rotary with a maximum value of +15dB)

I record with no compression, at 48Khz, 16 bit

My question (following your reading) is:

While I have no specific reason for the above settings would it be better to increase trim value and decrease level or vice versa? What is the physics/recording rationale here for optimizing the signal (I have low noise level since I have recording computer and mixer in another room, so in front of me are mics, lcd computer screen with a shielded cable and wireless computer keyboard/mouse)
