AS2.0 Discussion From CakeTV Sticky Thread

mwall

Just watched the Audio Snap videos, and it all looks so easy now. Can't wait to try it out.

I'm curious how you would go about replacing a whole drum kit from a poorly recorded kit? Would this work: Make a duplicate of the kit recording for each piece of the kit (so for a five piece drum kit, you'd have five copies of the kit recording). Then, EQ each track to bring out a different single piece of the kit. Then convert the resulting transients to MIDI.

Or is there an easier way? Would love to see a tutorial on that!

Keep up the good work on the vids. Love it.

If you have a complex the drum part, use the Sonitus Gate (instead of an EQ) to remove bleed.  Then either bounce to track or freeze your drums and use Audio Snap as shown in the video.  This way you have less or no bleed to work with, and AS would have an easier time recognizing transients.

Thanks, Jose. But this is different than what your describing. This was a very rudimentary drum recording with just one overhead mic. Then I have a few other recordings that had a separate mic on the bass drum – the gate would work well on that one, but not the main overhead, as far as separating out the drums.

You can even use AS to split tracks and drag them into the Matrix..

Oh, I see.  Then you have your hands full my friend.

It's probably easier to just program the drums from the ground up, or have someone play the grooves on an electric kit.

I would think using only the OH for drum replacement is too much work.

Yeah, but I want to preserve my son's playing as much as possible, but have the sound quality better, hence the drum replacement technique. I try my EQ idea and see how it goes. That and proper threshold adjustment might not be too bad.

Too much work doing what I tried to do. I did manage to get the, bass, HH and snare sort of isolated. But only the bass drum was recorded on a separate track and was good enough to do drum replacements with. The others weren't usable for that.

Yeah, that's what I thought.  You need to have the separate drum tracks in order for drum replacement to be effective.

    At least you tried :-)

I also was interested in doing this, at least for bass drum and snare, and maybe the toms. My problem is when they assign a MIDI note for the bass drum , I believe it was B3 (or B4). What MIDI note is used for snare?

It really doesn't matter much what key you set that for. When the midi conversion is complete, open the track in piano view, select the entire line that has the notes on it, and drag them all up or down until you hear the snare sound.
