Sonar X1 First impressions + bug: crash on switching driver mode

Just installed X1, looks great, I can see I'm going to enjoy using this.  Kudos to CW on updating the interface without creating something completely different--the learning curve should be pretty easy on this one.

Now the bug: I was in WDM/KS mode with my Echo MIA card; I switched to ASIO mode and bang, X1 crashed and threw me out to the desktop.  This was working in Sonar 8.3.1 and 8.5.3.

I'm running Win XP SP3, however the OS is XP media center--however, I've turned off every media center extension to the OS, and it's been very stable with previous releases of Sonar.

Regards, lightninrick

I'm not sure what to tell you, but I've yet to see this and I've changed driver modes a lot with a bunch of different interfaces (although never an Echo) over the many months I've been working with X1.

What happens when you restart SONAR after the crash? Does it load in ASIO mode or revert back to WDM mode?

As you know, XP Media Center is not supported officially so there could be something going on under the hood with that OS that we didn't test that is causing your crash.

I've considered replacing the OS with a fresh copy of XP, but have avoided that because the computer is a bit old (Athlon x2 4800+) and I only have one virgin copy of XP, which I plan to use on my next computer.

I'll restart today and see if it comes up in ASIO.

Well I just fired up X1 Producer and gave it a whirl. My first impressions...

Overall, I like it. I think that I will adapt just fine moving forward. I did not like all the new key bindings, but luckily I was able to override them and make it the way I had it in 8.5.

Also, after undocking the Console View and moving it over to my second monitor things started to feel real comfortable again, just like in 8.5.

There are a couple of things that I wish I could make like 8.5 though. In 8.5, I could play a project and while it is playing I could hit F9, let it play a little longer, then hit F10. After hitting F10 I would have a selection in the Timeline between where I hit F9 and F10. I could not find where I could make this happen like that in X1. Anyone have an angle on that?

I brought up X1, and it was in ASIO mode, no drivers selected.  I selected drivers (ASIO4ALL), then changed my mind and selected a different set of ASIO drivers (Echo MIA PCI).   Loaded one of my big test projects, and it ran fine.  Then I closed the project, and X1 crashed.

X1 is clearly not stable on my system at this point.  I'm not panicking, because 8.5.3 and 8.3.1 are certainly stable, and I'm not on deadline for anything at the moment.  But I would surely like to see X1 stabilized.  Hoping I can do that without upgrading the PC or installing a different OS, either of which represents days of effort.

I've heard that Win 7 won't run a lot of 32-bit VSTs.  Any truth to that?

none; seriously i haven't found one yet, but i'm on 32-bit win7; one tip is to have your vst folder outside the "program files" hive to avoid permissions issues

If you move to Win7 64bit there will be a handful of plugs that won't work properly under either BitBridge or JBridge but really, for most folks and most plugs, you should have no troubles at all.  I've got tons of plugs both 32bit and 64bit and the only ones that won't work reliably (and that I can't live without) are my SoundToys Native plugs.
