X1 - Create Envelope

Has anyone else seen that the "create envelope" menu command has been removed from the right-click menu on the track view? I used to really prefer this method for creating/assign an envelope rather than the new workflow. It seems there are too many clicks to get things done in X1.

Am I missing something??

You need to use the Edit Filter control for the track. Just click it and choose Automation > (type of automation you want to create/edit).

Thanks Scott, I saw this as well but I seem to prefer the right-click menu option. I guess I was just used to seeing all clip option in that menu. No longer seeing it there threw me off.

Yeah, I know... a lot of things have changed. You'll get used to the new workflow... it just takes some time.

There is an advantage of the new system.  Because you are choosing to edit only envelopes when you view them, you won't have that frustrating experience of not quite clicking in the right place.  So other than actually turning on the view for envelopes, I'd say the new way is much better.  I haven't worked with is a lot, but my experiments have been much better than my envelope experiences prior to X1.

Mr Scary, I had the same problem as you. It took me a long time to find where the clip and track envelope options had moved to.

I'm sure this contributed to my initial "wtf" reaction to Sonar X1, and there are still a number of things in that category.

But the moving of envelope/automation to the Edit Filter dropdown is something I can  tell that I will get used to very quickly, and miss it every time I go back to 8.5.

    So, hang in there!

8.5 had an envelope tool that did the same thing... but only when you needed it, and it worked across all tracks. Now, (if I'm understanding the tools correctly) you have to set a filter for each track you want to edit, and choose the particular envelope you want to edit. I'm not seeing how this approach is going to be more efficient... especially given that Shift-Scroll Wheel is not working to cycle through filters as advertised. It still scrolls the track view by "pages" for me.

There's no tool that can edit any envelope on any track at any time?

Yes, that would be the Smart tool. Just Shift+click on the envelope and it will automatically change the Edit Filter.

Cool. Thanks, Scott. When I ran into the problem with Shift-Scroll not changing filters, I got distracted trying to troubleshoot that and stopped short of trying Shift-click. That's much more efficient than using the drop-down, and pretty much eliminates the need for Shift-scrolling through filters.

    Hey Dave,

Glad to help! Yeah, there are a lot of things that seem "hidden" at the moment because it's all so new. It just takes some time to get used to the new workflow.

To add to Scott's advice: If you have a clickable scroll wheel on your mouse it will open the HUD.  Then you can just flick the wheel downward to quickly open the edit filter menu and select your new envelope.

You need to use the Edit Filter control for the track. Just click it and choose Automation > (type of automation you want to create/edit).
But where is the Edit Filter? I've searched the help index for "Filter" and for "Edit Filter", but nothing comes up.

Each track has an Edit Filter control. Look at the track parameters in a track and you'll see a control that says Clips on it. Click that to change the Edit Filter.

In addition, you can press T on your PC keyboard and bring up the Tools HUD (heads up display) anywhere in the Clips pane and you'll see the Edit Filter control for the track there too.

Yeah. I found that, but I think Shift click is going be easier for me to get used to, as it lets you switch tracks/clips and envelopes at the same time, where the alternative would be:

Click the new clip. Click the scroll wheel. Flick the scroll wheel (or click the filter drop-down). Click Automation. Select an envelope.

Incidentally, the scroll-wheel flick will also scroll the track view if you use Wizmouse, the usefulness of which just came up in another thread.

Whoa - Great tip. Scott and Bill. Who knew?

And I mean that in all seriousness, who knew?

I know, read the manual, but really there are SOOO many hidden tools and capabilities in X1 it's amazing but SOOO many of them are SOOO hidden. Given enough time we'll uncover all the goodies but SOOO many users are clueless to the new features and it's not THEIR fault.

This interface is deep and complex and Cake needs to step up NOW and provide a video tutorial for the more complex features. It's a huge missing puzzle piece IMHO.
