This sounds good. Good song construction..I can hear every instrument. Vocals nicely done. All though I think you could use a bit more tweaking on the levels. Bass drum in my listening environment is the loudest instrument in the mix(u said you are a drummer at heart so I took it that's what you naturally like is a driving bass drum. That said it feels to overpower your bass guitar (if thats in there) Good tone on the guitar. Well Done

Thanks man yeah I think I might have gone a bit over kill on the kick drum ;) haha Thanks about the Guitar tones they were made up on My behringer Vamp pro I havent been useing it very long but It gets some nice sounds. There is a bass in there somewhere its just following the guitar and ploding along I am thiking of trying a second mix on it and bringing it up a little so people can actualy hear it I find bass playing to be my weekness and I think my mix suffers for this I should go back and try and get it siting in the mix better Thanks for the reply :) Norrie

Norrie It's great to see you posting here. Your enthusiasm and thirst for knowledge over the past few months has been infectious and has yielded great results on this track. This is an impressive start by any standards a great song and well-performed and arranged. I'm going to stay out of mixing crits just now as my listening facilities have just changed drastically so I'm not trusting my ears just now. I'm confident though you'll get some great tips in that regard. Save to say you are soon going to be a big hitter around here at this rate. Way to go!

I like it. more than an admirable go at it. Check into the applications you can get out of v vocal which might help out some of the vox. Good heavy compression on the vox. I could've used a couple sections on the vox doubled with an octave up and mixed a bit back from the main vox. I might suggest putting more into the relationship between the bass and the kick to marry them together. I thought this was a fantastic job and if you played all of the parts yourself, then you're a musician as well. al

Thanks for the really nice replys guys :) I did not think for a momment I Would get such good feedback on this Its been fun to do and has taken what feels like forever since every time I try one thing it makes me want to try somethign else but I guess thats all part of the learning to mix and I am loveing it. Like Pickle bunker says I will need to work on my marrying the bass and the Kick together and see how I get on with that. V Vocal isnt something I have dived in to yet infact I didnt use it at all on that track I was useing my Tc helicon voiceworks to add a little bit of thickening to my voice as I struggle a lot when it comes to singing. Thanks again for all the nice replys guys it meens a lot and at least I know I am not fighting a loseing battle :) Norrie

Hey Norrie Welcome dude! and be careful of that Jon B character! ;-) wow only recording 6 months, hey? This is excellent. The mix is pretty hot but then this is metal and not new age. Drums are very well played, of course. Kick is a little too forward as has been said, whereas cymbals need to come up. vocals are also very well done, you can sing, and the recording itslf is very clear. Guitars may need to be increased in volume relative to the vocals. this can be one of the hardest thing to do, as the guitars and vocals occupy similar sonic space. i agree can't hear bass really. i'd take some of the verb off the lead guitar, sounds like it is being played from the other end of wembley arena. i'd also like to hear a little variation in dynamics, esp in the drums, at the mo it all goes on at the same tempo and drive the whole way through. maybe a few half-time moments, say in the verse, also strip back the distorted guitar then and bring 'em back in the chorus, for example. ebb and flow, keep the ear interested. as i say it's a little hot too, so you're losing some of the audio info like the cymbals, make sure when tracking you keep each track low (say -18 on your meters) and avoid clipping at your soundcrd outs, you can always use plug-ins to increase the overall volume on mastering. anyhow, a fantastic start dude, you have the chops and equipment, it's all about refining that mixing process now, and we're all learning in that area...

Love it! Even though the kick is upfront, it fits with this genre. I don't know if it was intentional but I hear a lot of Hetfield in your vox style. Even the rhythm guitar tone is very similar to his. You did an excellent job for only recording 6 months!

Hello Mr. Norie, Welcome, and fill us up with music. This is really good stuff. Fantastic drumming....(but maybe a bit too forward? not sure). Everything is nice and clear, well panned, eq-ed. I would bump up bass a tad, but i always say that

Hey Guys thanks again for all the replys its nice to hear from all of you :) I am loveing every momment of learning to record and this forum has been a god send so many nice people here that are more than willing to offer help with anything! I do agree the kick is a lot upfront I was aiming for that in your face style of kick Drum but I think I might have gone a bit over the top haha I also agree that the bass guitar has been lost I will need to do some work on that. I am planing to do another version of this and take on board what everyone has said here. I was hopeing I could ask a question ? In my Mixing room I dont have much room so my monitors are siting with there backs to a wall and they are not front fireing bass ports they fire from the back.... Could this have anything to do with my mixing ? Since the kicks not as in your face in my room as it is in other rooms that I have listened and In my room I can hear the bass guitar a lot clearer and upfront better. Could this be down to that ? I am planing on buying new monitors this week actualy I am loking fto upgrade from my Tapco S5s to a Set of KRK Rocket 6 or 8s or a set of Mackie MR8s The Krk have front fireing bass ports so this might help my mixes Although I do prefer the sound of the MR8s a bit better when I heard them in the shop but I dont know what to buy if the rear port on the MR8s is going to be a problem ? Any thoughts on this guys ? Thanks again to all for takeing the time to listen :) Norrie

Regarding the monitors and the way they are positioned: Just keep in mind that everything that is understated in your monitors will be overstated when played on an average stereo. If the rear-firing bass ports are blocked on your monitors this will definitely affect how many lows you have to dial in to make it sound right. I wouldn't block those ports. also keep in mind that with every sound coming from your monitors, there is also a reflection of that sound coming from any hard surface around them. Reflections of sound waves can cause phase issues and certain frequencies can become either accentuated or diminished. This is exaserbated by hard surfaces that directly face your monitors (ie. wall, window, etc.) Until you get yourself those rockets (or Mackies), just make sure to know what shortfalls your monitors have and compensate for it. Also, and I'm sure some people might recommend against this, don't feel it's wrong to change the eq settings within your sound card preferences to compensate. This is by no means a permanent fix but until you get the gear you love, it's a start. THis of course could be at the risk of training your ears to hear in the wrong manner. If you get used to hearing something mediocre, it will end up being the norm. A lot of people get stuck in "what the screen looks like" instead of just closing your eyes, and using your ears. Nobody listens to music with their eyes. You're already better than me, by the way. Keep it up. al

Hey Norrie - i'm a relative new comer to music production too (bout 1 year now) - I think this is awesome, and especially for only 6 months learning! You obviously have a natural talent. I'm a drummer at heart too - bet all your mates are shocked that a drummer can have other talents. LOVE the guitar solo. My only crits are: Kick drum too loud and maybe too high-pitched. Take off a bit of the sharpness. Also - the guitars perhaps need a bit more low/mids - however they still sound great where they are. Well done - i will look out for more of your stuff in the future mate. Dave

Put that FN Guitar down hah if they cant play the drums they dont want me playing the guitar :P In a fun way of course haha Yeah I am in tottal agreement about the kick drum and also with what everyone has said about the bass guitar level In my room the kicks not to loud and sits a litttle bit more in the mix but the momment I take it to another room its way over thre top I was out yesterday and spent the day demoing monitors and I have orderd a set of the Rocket g2 8's and some accoustice treatment. The momment they arrive I plan to do a remix on this track and see what I can do with it. Thanks for all the nice comments though guys :) I didnt expect anythign like the response I have had so thanks to all :D Norrie

For a 2nd song post..sounds darn good to my ears! Mix wise..Kick and snare are a bit pronounced on my system, but I read that you're getting some new monitors and doing a little treatment, so kudos to you. Guitar tones are great and yer vox very good. You're obviously a very good musician and this tune is well put together. Mixing is a different beast for sure, but, like anything else, the more you work at it, the better you get. Great advice on these forums!! Larry

I Got my new KRK Rocket 8's and a set of Universal audio Vibro Pads and 3 600x600mm wedges I plan to put the wedges behind the monitors sice they are so close to the back wall and hope that helps my room out a bit but I plan not to fix them to the wall so I can always move them and try them in other places :) So today Ive built a new shelf to hold the monitors and painted it so I hope tomorow to get working on the remix of the track and see if I can make it better I will keep you posted and thanks again for all the comments on the track :) Norrie

A really good job for a second effort. My first thought was dropping the vocal down a bit into the mix. But it could just be these computer speakers I'm listening on. They have a strong tendancy to over-push the lower vocal range. I notice it on my stuff as well. It should still stand out nicely I think even if dropped a bit. And it's a good vocal performance as well. The kick drum is definitely super-kickin, and it sounds like maybe there's a lot more of it down below what these speakers can represent. So backing that down a bit, as suggested above, probably would be a good thing. But anyway, dang good so far. Keep it up.

Pretty nice. Good to see you dive in with such gusto, and get such nice results. A few comments from me. The kick is a bit too loud....(already been said) and IMHO a bit to repetitious. I also thought the vox were a bit to loud for the genre.... Nice job on doubling (it was doubling wasn't it) on the vox. The bass should have really been much louder as well for the genre. If the song has an ending, don't fade it out. For 6 months, this is a mix to be proud of... Imagine another 6 months of experience under your belt.

Hey Guitar hacker! Thanks for the comment! Yeah it was doubleing on the verse and the chorus just felt it thickend up the vocals a lot as I am not a singer far from it and I dont like the sound of my own voice but this helped make it a little better. I agree the kick is far to loud as I was talking to some of the guys above and saying how it was ok in my studio room on my Tapco S5s kick seemed not to bad a little loud but nothing major I was aiming for it to be just a little bit in your face but defo not s much as it is. The Bass guitar also sat quite well in my room. I took the song off Sonar and put it straight up on Sound Click so its my own fault for not referenceing it off of other speekers around the house and in the car etc ( I shall not be makeing that mistake again ) I have since done that and I agree with every one I have gone tottaly over the top with the kick and the bass is hardly there at all and on some speekers in the house and also the car I cant hear the bass at all. I posted above nd said Ive treated my self to a new set of monitors and some accoustic treatment so I plan to do another mix and try and get it right :) I had tryed a few endings for the song actualy with it fadeing out with no ending and also with it just staying the same level with the same level it felt to repetitive I think in the next mix I will drop the last section and see how I get on with that Thanks again for the comment its nice to hear from you on here especialy after all your help in the forum I realy appreciate it I hope everyone will take the time to listen once I have a second mix done on it. I cant thank every one enough for there kind words about the track I didnt exspect to get good feed back on it after 6 months of learning to record so this has made me really happy and itching to learn more day by day :D I am realy looking forward to tryng out the new monitors they blow my Tapcos away and now I have some acoustic treatment it should help aswell that and remembering to reference on other systems haha ;) Accoustic pannels will be going on the walls tomorow then its on to do the re mix :D Thanks again Norrie

With some good monitors, and learning them, plus a sub (if you have the notion to go that deep) you should be able to turn out some nice mixes with out having to play them all over the place first....

I started useing the new monitors and the accoustic treatment was put up today I am hearing things I never thought were there in tracks and I am so happy with the sound its unreal !!!! I decided when I bought the Krk 8s that I wouldnt need a sub in the room I am in but I will be moveing in the next few months to a bigger place and I am sure I will then decided to buy the KRK 10 Sub to go with them! I did demo it and it was awesome I just couldnt use it in this place at the momment or I would have had it in a second haha Tomorows a new year and a new day so the monitors couldnt be ready to go at a better time! I for one cant wait to spend next year learning to record and mix :D Norrie

Dude - I'm not in any place of experience at the mixing deal to really give any real comments on the mix other than it sounds really good. Haha. Great guitar tone. Nice drum work. You're voice sounds great - although, I think it would sound better if you just sang straight without that accent thingy. But I totally hear what you're going for. nice job, bro!
