Still having trouble with staff view snap settings
Hi - I want these notes to snap by a half note (these actual notes are not important . . . . just a sampling from a project). Instead, they are snapping by the arbitrary value of 1/32 notes. I have tried different magnetic settings, of course. How do I do it? Here is a little viddy: http://www.screencast.com/users/kahlilg/folders/Jing/media/1626e54d-a16d-4a86-9d2b-3df8369b2cd8 What am I doing wrong? The selected notes are not snapping by half notes. Advice? Thanks.

It should be set to "Snap To" not "Set By" as seen in your video. Second - you need to turn magnetism strength Off in Preferences. It's yet another example of the illogical snap magnetism programming not making sense to users - and that's because - the programming is backwards! Randy B.

Thanks for the reply. I understand the difference between by/to. The setting of "by" in my video should work. It does in PRV, and track view. And yes, magnetism is off. Maybe it is a problem with my install.

Count me in for a confused X1 staff view user. It seemed like I had to exit staff view and open it again for my snap settings to take effect. Regrettably, I used Staff View extensively in 8.5.3 before I purchased Sibelius so it's not like I am brand new to the concepts.

Similarly, I've worked in Cakewalk for years for sequencing/arranging and then save as .mid and do my final print version in Finale. I like working like this, because if the project involves live recording, it's all there in Cakewalk from the start.

Tried your advice LPMike - I had chosen measure, but Cakewalk was snapping to 1/16. Just tried closing and re-opening staff view. Now, measure is still selected, but Cakewalk is snapping to 1/4. That's closer!!!

Again, might be my install. Just patched on my X1b and haven't even rebooted yet.

I like working like this, because if the project involves live recording, it's all there in Cakewalk from the start. That's cool if your creative workflow doesn't require a staff view to create or edit with your MIDI data when it is being created. If the notation is only for printing then yes, of course. But others prefer to tweak or enter MIDI data on a staff rather than, or in addition to a piano roll view. Frankly, I'm hoping that Roland/Cakewalk do what PT did and aquire some notation software, include a light addition of said software within Sonar, and sell the full blown product as another offering. The idea of rewiring noation software is so dorky: 1) You end up with 2 programs 2) Yes, with rewire to 2 programs play back in sync, but you rely on the sound generating capabilites of the notation program, and your MIDI data exists there until you bring it over to Sonar 3) Rewire allows the notation programs audio to be routed into Sonar 4) If Rewire would let you access the same MIDI data from both programs, it might be a solution of sorts, but for goodness sake, PT, CuB, LG, samp all have embedded staff support.
