[Automation] Topic for automation issues
Hello, if anybody can confirm/reproduce the following issues, make sure to submit a bug to cakewalk support :) Also, if you experience any other automation-related bugs - feel free to post them here. AI#1. Cannot re-assign automation envelope to the envelop of another type Environment: - Sonar X1B build 246, x64
- Windows 7 Ultimate x64
Scenario: - Insert a synth into a project via the Insert/Soft Synth menu (I used DropZone for its relative simplicity)
- Choose Simple Instrument Track option
- In the Synth's track Edit Filter, create a plug-in automation Envelope (I used "Enabled" of the DropZone)
- Right-click the created envelope and select Assign Envelope from the context menu
Expected Result: - The list of possible controls for re-assignment is limited to those of that plug-in, i.e. track automation, Pro-Channel automation, other plug-ins automation, MIDI automation cannot be selected for re-assigning the current envelope.
Actual Result: - The list of possible controls for re-assignment is NOT limited to those of that plug-in, i.e. track automation, Pro-Channel automation, other plug-ins automation, MIDI automation can be selected for re-assigning the current envelope.
Notes: For all plug-ins inserted in FX bin, re-assigning works as expected (only the MIDI option is not available, which is also a bug for Quick Instrument tracks, but not a bug for Audio tracks since htey can't have MIDI envelopes) AI#2. Cannot Copy plug-in automation to another track Environment: - Sonar X1B build 246, x64
- Create a couple of nodes to draw an envelope
- With a Smart tool over the top part of the track, select a time range to include all or some of the newly created nodes
- Hit Ctrl+C to copy
- Hit Ctrl+Alt+V to open the Paste Special dialogue
- Select "new" track as a destination for the paste, make sure Automation is selected for pasting, and hit OK
Expected Result: - A new track is created (beats me what type it's going to be, but I assume it should be of the same type as the automation originally belonged to - MIDI or Audio according to the settings in the synth rack)
- This new track contains a copy of the selected automation nodes. Envelope itself should be orphaned, I suppose (to prevent the possible commotion and events duplication)
Actual Result: - No new track is created
- Automation nodes are pasted on the original track, overwriting the existing automation data
Notes: - If the track with synth is split from Instrument track into a separate pair of Audio and MIDI track, then the new track IS created, but it still contains no envelope data. The paste did work on the original automation track
- If you select the bus instead of a new/existing track as a destination, then the nodes are copied to the bus!
- Everything wors for plug-in automation for plug-ins inserted into track's FX bin.
AI#3. Cannot Copy bus automation to a track Environment: - Sonar X1B build 246, x64
- Windows 7 Ultimate x64
Scenario: - Insert a new bus into a project (or use the existing one)
- In this bus's Edit Filter, create an automation Envelope (I used "Bus Input Gain")
- Create a couple of nodes to draw an envelope
- With a Smart tool over the top part of the bus, select a time range to include all or some of the newly created nodes
- Hit Ctrl+C to copy
- Hit Ctrl+Alt+V to open the Paste Special dialogue
- Select "new" track as a destination for the paste, make sure Automation is selected for pasting, and hit OK
Expected Result: - A new track is created (beats me what type it's going to be, but I assume it should be Audio because of the similar nature of the buses)
- This new track contains a copy of the selected automation nodes. Envelope itself should either be orphaned or assigned to the same control as it was on the bus (i.e. Output Volume turns to Volume, Input Gain to orphaned since there's no Gain automation for audio tracks)
Actual Result: - No new track is created
- Automation nodes are pasted on the original bus, overwriting the existing automation data
AI#4. Copying automation to a bus, which never had automation before, makes it impossible to edit the pasted envelope Environment: - Sonar X1B build 246, x64
- Windows 7 Ultimate x64
Pre-Conditions: - Only reproducable in a NEW project, which has never had bus automation in it
Scenario: - Insert a synth into a project via the Insert/Soft Synth menu (I used DropZone for its relative simplicity)
- Choose Simple Instrument Track option
- In the Synth's track Edit Filter, create a plug-in automation Envelope (I used "Enabled" of the DropZone)
- Create a couple of nodes to draw an envelope
- With a Smart tool over the top part of the track, select a time range to include all or some of the newly created nodes
- Hit Ctrl+C to copy
- Hit Ctrl+Alt+V to open the Paste Special dialogue
- Switch Destination to Bus and notice the default value of this drop-box is blank, but not any exisitng bus name.
- Select the desired Bus (I used "Master" from the original Normal template) and hit OK
- On the bus with the pasted envelopes, try selecting it with a Shift+Click or anyhow else
Expected Result: - The new envelope is marked as Orphaned, but is selectable with a Shift+Click and thus editable.
Actual Result: - The new envelope is marked as Orphaned, but is not selectable with a Shift-Click and thus non-editable (one obviously can't select an orphaned envelope in the Edit Filter)
Notes: Possible workarounds are: - Right-Click the pasted envelope between two nodes and change the curve type - this will make the envelope editable
- Create another bus envelope, e.g. Input Gain - this will also make the pasted envelope editable and selectable with a Shift+Click

#1. No Slider movement during automation read while track is in Read Automation Environment: Sonar X1C build 319, x64 Windows 7 Professional x64 Scenario: 1. In any audio Track... Click "W" press spacebar to play track. 2. Adjust slider level... Automation data gets written to track. 3. Stop track... playback again while in Automation Write ("W") and Automation Read ("R"). Slider animates correctly, showing automation. 4. Deselect "W"... only "R" on track is selected. Slider does not move! Level indication text below slider shows level being changed during automation read. But slider does not move. Expected Result: Slider animates correctly reflecting automation read for the track. Actual Result: No Automation of slider reflected in Console View... level indication is changing below slider during automation read. Notes: Thoughout the process of getting automation to work for the a track, I had lost the audio on the track. NOT SURE HOW OR WHY. Automation spline was correct and the slider in console view was about -5db, but not moving during playback. Meter for compressor was moving and Audio data was locked and intact... Still no audio. I disabled the "W" button on the track, Still... NO AUDIO. So I right clicked on the automation spline in the track and selected "Clear ALL". Nodes in the spline were cleared, Automation spline indicated -5db and slider was positioned @ -5 db as well. Still... no audio!! Finally, I decided to disable the Automation read on the track... and I got audio back for the track. WIERD! but need this to work... kinda critical. Add'l Note: This is NOT the case on my Live Rig (Laptop running Windows Vista 64). Slide automation works as expected on this machine. Same version and Build.
