Using Slide

I am trying to remove dead space in front of the tracks using the slide function  but I am having a bit of trouble with it. I can slide to the right but not to the left...  I have volume automation in two of the tracks which appears to be the problem because it starts at the 00:00:00 so Sonar assumes it is at the beginning. How does one trim the volume automation???

highlight the area to be removed on the timeline and make sure that all tracks are highlighted

then hit the delete key.  a dialog box will pop up. make sure you delete everything including the "hole"

    Hi, Evergreen

The best thing to do is get the free audio editor Audacity, since I'm rather sure from your post that you don't have a program like that.  Export your entire project, even with the gap at the top.  Bring the 2-track master into Audacity, cut off the beginning, and do more improvements there while you're at it.

If you really feel you need to get rid of the silence by using Slide, the reason you're currently unable to get the tracks to move is because you have the entire Time Line selected.  With it all selected, there's no place for that selection (All) to slide to.  Hold CTRL while clicking in the Time Line at your song's actual start.  Then you can move everything as needed.

If this is for exporting the song without the silence at the beginning, then just highlight the timeline area you want to export and leave that first part out of the highlight.  export as normal.
