Angels We Have Heard - cover

I had mentioned (asking for help, really) in the techniques forum that I was going to get to record a mom (piano) and two daughters (vocalists).  This recording setup is almost completely raw, just the piano with a coat behind it to isolate it a bit (and this did a great job - almost no vocal bleed at all), and the vocal mic was totally open which also seems to be working as a room mic for the piano as well.

    Sounds pretty good, especially knowing you used just 2 mics. The piano has some nice ambience; I'm surprised the vocal doesn't have more. I know they wanted a "pure" recording, but I'd still have been tempted to surreptitiously sneak in a little reverb and give those flat notes a subtle nudge upward.




    All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to.

    Thanks, bitflipper.  I'm kind of thinking the same  thing - it's very tempting to add in some reverb.  I'm surprised we didn't get at least a little bit of the room back in the vocal mic.  I had her a good 30" away if not more, using a music stand as a sort of railing ("don't move this and don't step past it" were my instructions).  Moving it further away meant moving it towards the piano and we were getting to where the piano was going to overpower the vocal if we did any more.

    She really sounds like i'd imagine an angel to sound.  Very Beautiful singing and a creative rendition.  If you put a couple drops of wet reverb as Bit suggests and as you're inclined, you find this to be ASTOUNDING.

    OK I'm convinced.  I put just the tiniest of reverbs on the vocal mic, like a 20% wet signal with a small pre-delay and it's well worth it.  Just enough that you might think you hear it on an ending consonant, but not enough to make the piano bleed all wishy-washy.  Not at my DAW (silly workplace!) but I'll get it up soon.

    Wow--what a great arrangement. Did the mom arrange it?  Sounds like quite a talented family.  I didn't hear it w/o the reverb, but this sounds really nice to me.
