“Copy and paste” Automation in SONAR X1 are broken and CAKEWALK confirm issue!

Anyone that use Automation in SONAR X1 know that “copy and paste” automation specific values like example a “Cut OFF-filter” with Synth Tacks,  Bus tracks are totally broken.
Works with AUDIO tracks though!

Please fix this ASAP Cakewalk!

1.       Load a Synth, one MIDI one Synth Track
2.       On the Synth Track. Write some automation like example “Cut OFF Filter” or another specific automation values included in that SYNTH with mouse
3.       Select the created automation.
4.       Press COPY  “CTRL +C”
5.       Move the courser to another BAR press PASTE CTRL +V or “Paste Special” CTR+ ALT + V.
6.       As you can see the Automation curve are shown as copied but are not attached to the specific value (CUT OFF) in the synth.
7.       In fact the values are not attached to anything?
8.       In fact as you can see there are no ways to attach the specific copied automation values to any values in the SYNTH from the list. The SYNTH automation values have disappeared and can’t even be selected?
9.       You can only attach the copied curve to PAN or Volume automation?
10.   Same kind of strange behavior happens with BUS automation too.

Expected Results:

That it work and the automation are copied correctly and attached to right values in the specific synth-

               Actual Results:

                Broken Automation

you should also try moving some clips around in your tracks with synth automation.

that's even more fun!

I've opened these a while back, hopefully they get fixed

I also reported this to cakewalk thru their bug reporter.. not fixed as of X1D either :( considering another DAW now.

Good workaround -

Split into midi and synth track - copy the midi clips into the synth track - automate within the clip (adjust clip lengths if needed).

Move those midi clips that are sitting on the synth output track and watch the automation go with them.

Thanks! Yes. That is a good workaround. I thought I had tried a similar approach a few X1 revs ago (synth rack - automation track setting) and it did not work either..maybe not. my bad. but it does work in X1D. Still wish they'd FIX this. Thanks again! CW should pay you - you have helped save the day. Putting the automation on the audio track for the synth is all it takes now.

Cheers! And the mid clip copied onto the synth output track to easily copy and paste it where you want the automation to follow makes it really easy-

Lanceindastudio - not sure I understand. If I insert a synth and turn the knobs with W enabled, the automation data goes into the synth track. Are you talking about doing automation via MIDI? Sorry to be dense here, but what you describe sounds promising...

Anyway, here's my workaround.

1. Create an audio track. Right-click on the FX bin and insert the soft synth.
2. Create a separate MIDI track to drive the soft synth.
3. Any automation you create by moving knobs while W is enabled gets written into the audio track containing the synth, and that data can be copied, pasted, re-assigned, etc.

IOW - if you do "manual" instead of "automatic" insertion, automation in the synth track behaves the way you want it to.

I haven't tried this with all synths, all conditions, etc. so if anyone else has any experience along these lines, chime in.

Hi Anderton.

After you get that automation you want in the separate synth output track, I copy a mid clip onto the syntyh output track (yes a midi clip, usually from the midi track as this is where the automation will actually be), and then, when I take that midi clip that is on the synth output track and copy it to another location on the synth output track, the automation goes with that clip.
The clip serves no purpose being on the synth output track and does not alter the output at all except the service of carrying all automation with it when it is copied and moved elsewhere on the track.

Thank you!

Aha! Got it...pretty clever. Thanks. Try my workaround too, sometime - it lets you treat automation exactly the way you expect it to work.

There have been multiple threads on this recently including one I started not too long ago.  I'm honestly amazed/troubled that this has gone on w/o being addressed in ANY of the updates or quick fixes for X1. Especially for something that seems like such a basic, straight-forward function.  I mean should I seriously need a "workaround" to copy & paste automation???
It's even more troubling that in a recent thread a rep from Cakewalk (Seth I believe) actually stated that automation currently functions as it should. SMH.  So either there is some serious lack of testing going on or they're just giving us b.s. answers. I don't know.  Either way it's not good.

Exactly.  I cannot believe that this is considered a low priority for Cakewalk.  I haven't downloaded X1D yet, but it sounds like this bug still exists.

I'm going to have to seriously look at other platforms now.

I don't think this has been addressed yet. I am still experiencing this issue and I just did a new install of X1d. I did a post on the most recent thread I could find back in 2011. I will keep an eye on this one however, as it is more recent... Thanks!

Yes I also started a thread on this. I also would like to be able to copy and paste automation within a simple instrument track instead of splitting the track, copying to an alternate midi or audio track or any other extra step that just adds a few extra steps and is not very efficient. Is there an efficiency expert working at cakewalk?? Maybe not :( I guess this can just be known as the work around platform. I'm done complianing now. +1 for copying and pasteing automation within simple instrument tracks.

Nope. This issue is still very much alive in X1 and no one from Cakewalk has yet to even so much as acknowledge the problem despite numerous threads and bug reports from various users including myself. It has become my biggest issue w/ X1 and like I've said before if this doesn't get fixed in whatever the next update/release is for Sonar I am done w/ this program.

The issue we may be dealing with on this is that nobody has contacted the bakers and formally opened an issue with a CWBRN number? Is anyone aware of any open documented issues with Cakewalk? Does a CWBRN already exist that any of you are aware of? Before I call it in I would like to know if this issue is already owned by someone and what the feedback was....Thanks!

Problems with copying automation have been complained about for many years/versions.

"The function/feature is working as designed."

The man says, "Doc, when I do this it hurts."

The Doc says, "Don't do that."

As I stated in the post directly above yours, the issue has been formally reported through Cake's problem reporter by myself and others.  They've been aware of the issue for quite some time now.

I received the same email as Freddie a couple of days ago (though it was reported some months ago) that the problem has been "submitted to development".  What that means as far as actually getting the problem fixed, only time will tell.

None of these workarounds did work on my computer with SONAR X1?

Had the same problem myself - now on X1D (installing X2 in a few days - will post back if problem solved)
BUT Right now theres a big ambiguity that needs clearing up before any code fix - specifically what the automation belongs to -
Track, Layer or clip. An ideal might be that Track Automation, Layer Automation and Clip Automation each provide separate options (copy, paste assign envelope etc) and are accessible as separate entities. Currently only the clip automation is this clear cut and copying it generally works as expected. Skylight implies that copying a track that the automation belongs to the track - but the experiences above demonstrate that this isnt the case.

One solution is to put all automation in a separate stereo bus and output the track(s) to that bus - That way clips tracks and layers can then explicitly be 'attached to' the automation set - the down side is that this doesn't help with a template style automation (i.e copy, paste and modify for an individual track)

Hi Nick, and welcome to the forum.

X2 and Automation is a whole different ball game. If you are installing X2, as you say, then you will see that you now have Automation Lanes and manipulation the automation is a lot easier, and less buggy than before.

cheers

This and numerous other automation issues were addressed as part of the automation and selection/edit commands overhaul in X2.  Many fixes were made to the way instrument track automation was handled.

In X2 not only can you copy and paste instrument track automation on the same track, it now also works with multiple track copy paste and copying to a different instrument track as well.  Bus automation is now also consistent across copy/paste.

In X2 I think we have covered every common case (and more) that you might have with automation copy paste. If we missed something please let us know.
