tone generator for kick drum

Been trying to figure out exactly how to use a tone generator for a kick drum, to add some oomph to the kick drum.
Read here about using pentagon as one resource to use it. So, if I load up pentagon, and use say a simple sine wave, and route pentagon to my keyboard, would that work?
Also, read here in forum, that side chaining using sonar vst's is next to impossible, so.. can someone guide me thru all of this? I know that to use a tone generator it is best to use one of the frequencies of the key of the song.. no problem there.. but all the other stuff is above my head... appreciate any help

If you're trying what I think you are, i did it once.
I used a basic synth, well-rounded sound, subtle enough to blend in with the kick.  I then created a MIDI track that played along with the kick, and just hit the root notes of the chords being played (an octave lower than the bass guitar).
I thought it was a great idea until I filled up the project with other instruments, and the "toned" aspect of the kick just became unnoticed.  It was a waste of time, and probably will be unless your project is quite sparse.

If this isn't what you're trying to do, then ignore my tale of woe.

You can definitely use your keyboard to play and record the midi notes that will drive a synth. You could also use your mouse to enter a midi note or notes directly into a midi track by eyeballing them to the waveform of the kick drum. Also, audio snap can be used to automatically generate (more or less) a midi note at each transient in the kick drum track. I can't remember if there are other methods in Sonar or not.

Adding a sub bass tone is a common method of beafing up a kick on certain types of music. Been a long time and this was how I did it with analog gear, so just a matter of applying in the box patching.
We used to use a gate that opened when the kick played. Hardware gates had trigger inputs. Hopefully VST gates do to.  I used an Atari to play a low Synth and the note durration was set to sustain for the whole song. The gate was on the channel strip insert for the Synth output and triggered when the kick played.

So fast forward to now and you can see its a matter of having the kick track triggering the gate, on a sub synth note track. Here I'm as lost as you as I have not tried this yet. If it was a hardware gate like I have in my Yamaha 01v it would be easy, Not sure how you patch a plug in this way but I'm about to go find out.

Note: Because of limitations in both the DirectX and VST plug-in architectures, it is not possible to create audio or control signal busses between plug-ins in any standard way. This limitation makes it difficult to implement a standard gate sidechain input that can accept an "external" trigger signal. It is possible to create a "hack" that allows signals to flow between our own plug-ins, but we feel that it just is not the proper way to do things. The sidechain functionality in the fx:gate plug-in allows you to use high- and lowpass filters on the incoming audio to create a "sidechain trigger signal".

Well I give up, it has a toggle for side chain which seems to have something to do with the low and hi pass filters. But nowhere is instructions for how to patch it to another scource? In otherwords, no trigger input. Might be what you do then is to create a buss, Put this in the EFX bin. Route both the Kick and the synth to the buss and use the filters and see what happens. I'd try it but I'm on my laptop and have only MIDI tracks, no audio.

you can use a 808 (a few included in sonar) beefed up with fx, and then eq cut not to clash with your existing acc. bass drum.

there are loads of freebie drum things that you could use.

Cactus.. that is what I was coming u against too with the side chain on that.It is strange sonitus says that, because I think Cubase uses vst, and I know someone that is able to do that...

What I was hoping to see was a selection that would say " trigger source" which would point to another track. This would be the solution.

No need to mess with sidechained gates, unless you just want to learn how it's done. If it's a MIDI track, clone it and drive a synth or sampler. If it's not a MIDI track, create one with AudioSnap. You can then use an 808 sample or just a deeper-sounding kick sample. The TTS-1 has both.

Awww, that's no fun Dave. tis' to easy!! :}And it's not the sound I think the OP is talking about either. There's a sound you can get with the gate triggered synth that I'm not so sure a plain sample would cover. It moves. One aspect is the pitch can change if your really into it. It's like this sub sonic bass note locked to the kick. I see if I can dig up the recording we did where we used this trick, I think it was a Techno beat thing.

Short version assuming you have the kick already. 

Insert a tone generator plugin and set to the frequency you want (or insert a synth with the tone you want and have it output a tone continuously throughout the song. I would probably do this using a whole note in every measure, otherwise you'll miss out on the tone if you start playback anywhere but the beginning.)

Insert a gate on the synth's audio output (the Sonitus one is the easiest.) Go to your Kick track and try inserting a send just like you would to a bus. Instead of choosing an existing output or bus or creating a new one, look near the bottom for something like Sonitus:fx Gate(Side Input)-Kick and choose it.

Now your kick is triggering the sidechain input of the gate. Set the volume of the aux send so the levels are good, then set the threshold of the gate as needed so you only get the tone when the kick hits.

You can also use the same kind of routing with the Gate in Duck mode to cut out sounds you don't want to hear at the same time (i.e. cut the snare mic when the kick hits.) It's hard to get this set so it sounds natural, but can be done.

good info all.. appreciate it... sort of not a direct way as in other DAWS, but hey.. that is why we use Sonar right?
