Envelope Modulation with a Mod Wheel (MC3)
-
April 22, 12 6:35 PM
( #1 )
Hey, everyone. I have MC3 hooked up to a hardware MIDI keyboard with a built-in modulation wheel. I was wondering how I'd rig an audio track controlling a VSTi (attached to a midi track) to modulate any specified envelope (or parameter, besides exlusively MIDI's pitch bend). Anyone know how I'd do this?

I rarely use a mod wheel on my synth..... BUT, I do know that MC will record the mod wheel movements and that will control certain parameters in the synth playback. I have used it mainly for pitch variation. And IIRC it was recorded into the midi track and defaulted to pitch control in the synth. MC3.... wow, that's kind of old. But if it still runs fine..... cool. As far as using the mod wheel to control other envelopes and parameters, I have never considered that. The other envelopes I use are panning and volume and I prefer to do those all manually.

MC3 doesn't have ACT, IIRC, but if you have ACT which I believe is available on MC6, you can program any MIDI output to perform particular "control surface" type functions.

THanks, guys. And I know, it's pretty old... I'll be upgrading to MC6 at the beginning or middle of next month, so it won't be long. But on that note, anyone willing to tell how to do it so that I can already know once I purchase MC6?

I have never used ACT myself. you'll need to check the help files once you get it to figure out how to make it work.

Well. It just came to my attention about 10 seconds ago that I'm actually using Music Creator 5. Does that change anything? EDIT: Oop.... Nevermind. I got MC3, it came with the USB Music Pack.

99.5%... (Like I said, it came with the USB Music Pack, so whatever came with that one.... It never really said which version on the box.)

UPDATE: Just wanna tell you guys... It appears the MC3 actually DOES have some kinda of Automation recording system. I haven't got around to using it yet, but it seems like it may do what I need. DOUBLE UPDATE! TUrns out MC3 has full capabilites for recording Automation! I guess I just didn't know enough about what to ask. Thanks for trying, guys!

automation recording is not the same thing as wanting the mod wheel to automate the faders or other parameters. that's why we answered the way we did. yes, MC3 has automation. it's called envelopes - and you can input them manually or by moving the sliders using the READ and WRITE automation features in the project track's parameters.

The thing is that while we can guess at the issue and try to help, new folks usually don't understand the program and terms well enough to splain things properly. Heck,,,, after 4 years I still don't. Ultimately, you have to learn it for yourself and it seems that is what you're doing..... that;s the way to do it. We can try to help when you hit the brick walls. So dig in.... explore, experiment and have fun.
