A bit of music hell over the weekend...

I'm baaaaaack (but still recovering) from a weekend of directing the Oregon Open dart tournament (the longest running event of its kind in the U.S. - 43 years).

The event halls were split with a smaller room upstairs and the main room downstairs.  The director's desk was upstairs and the Ladies events are run up there as well (so I'm a sexist - deal with it ).  Anyway, I made these playlists of over 7,000 songs onto iPods for the music (one for upstairs and one for down).  They were meant to be fairly "safe" choices, mostly classic rock, with some progressive, metal, soft rock, alternative and new wave.  Downstairs, the men loved it (I had a couple of especially happy and unbelieving comments that I had some old Blue Oyster Cult and King Crimson mixed in).  Upstairs, not so much.  Toward the end of Sunday (after having to listen to a lot of snide remarks) I let one of the girls plug her iPad into the mixer.  Let's just say, the Lady Gaga songs were the closest to "G" rated.  Some pretty horrific Top-40 crap with language to make a sailor blush.  Yet the girls loved it.  Bleh...

It was even worse than the amount of time I got to sleep!  From 6am on Friday morning until 2am Monday, I got a total of six hours of sleep.  Needless to say, today was toast.   I've already had 12 hours of recovery shut-eye and am ready to go back for more.

BUT IT GETS WORSE!!!  The hotel I was staying in was rumored to have a really nice breakfast buffet except... THERE WAS NO BECAN!!!  Torture! *Sigh*

Time for all of you to head over to Beyond My DAW!

Nothing seems to point to a gender divide more clearly than the choice of music. You can say it’s a generalization but I have seen similar scenarios to yours repeated many times over the past 40 years.
Looking at some young teens I know, the boys are into dubstep and other non-mainstream stuff, the girls are all into top 40 and the X-factor.

    I don't know Craig,

7,000 songs and you couldn't please the ladies?

I'd devote at least 6000 of the songs to that and be happy with the remaining 1000 for times when there were no ladies around.

    Just saying.

Congratulations on playing your part in what sounds like a massive and successful event.

The recovery time you give yourself afterward is every bit as important as your direct input at the time.

So get back under that duvet and assimilate all that good stuff.

    By order!

    We noticed, Karyn.

We still have the psychological scars from your absence.  Sometimes at night, I can still hear Bapu screaming.  Of course, that's my default ringtone, but that's beside the point.

    Don't do that again, please.

Not everyone running an event has a guy who would load up 7000 songs for the event. You deserved a pat on the back. Were these all played random? It would be cool to have buttons for aggressive, extra soft etc. I think the radio stations around here play the same 20 songs all day.Having 7000 songs would be great only I'd probably be 85 till I played them all :) My wife has a totally different taste in music. She would have fit in well with those gals. Karyn- I knew something was different here...

    Hi,

Wow ... you didn't tell me ... I would have shown up just for the heck of it. With my bad eye sight that dart could go either left or right ... and only a judge could tell that!

As a wise Guy once stated from his holy chapala ... none of the hits, none of the time ... prevents you from becoming just another turkey in the middle of all the other turkeys!

I just can't believe how absolutely filthy the language has become in the so-called "Top-40" songs...  Disgusting stuff.

And, yes, the 7,000 songs were on shuffle play, but I had a bunch of genre-based playlists so I could restrict things if I wanted to.

Oh, and mixed into "their" playlist of verbal abuse were Freebird and Brown Eyed Girl - Arrrrrrgh!!!

Yes - as in  *$%^ is it that time already.  When the Filipino cover band in my favorite Dubai bar play that one you know you have stayed out far to late.
