Just got the email. Kinda strapped for cash, but it seems like about as good a deal as I'm likely to get for this plug. Might have to go for it.

Great deal.  Yes indeed.
Are you absolutely, positively, without a doubt, undeniably certain?  Since this product has been out for a while, I assume it has all possible bugs ironed out for use with Sonar X1.  Right?  I just don't want to buy another Slate product and spend three months waiting for it to come to term.

Aside from the above, how does this product compare to Ozone 4or5 and to TRacks Deluxe?  The reviews look wonderful, and I am pretty certain it is worth $100; however, I would just like to hear from you experienced users as to its place in do it yourself mastering projects.

I've not had any crashes closing FG-X.
The only time I have issues is when trying to save a preset within the FG-X.
That will crash and create a "mini-dump" (a steaming pile of pooh; IMHO) EVERY TIME!

Man that stinks!
But, I CAN save presets with the "Presets" in the upper left corner, or
the drop down menu "VST"
I know its not the SLATE, but the same thing (FG-X is out on the DAW)

Is it "better" than Ozone or TRackS, you can get things LOUD very quickly.
I HAVE all three, do I NEED all three?...
HTH,
Tom

Great price.

This is my go to mastering tool as of late. Like Tom Deering, I have Ozone 5 and T-Racks Deluxe and of course Waves Mercury but for my mastering stage I use this bad boy.

BTW, like Tom, I've not ever had FG-X crash on me (except when I confirmed Tom's scenario).

At $100 semolians FG-X is an incredible deal.  At that price it even beats out my beloved Fab Filter Pro L.  Preserve your transients!  Get FG-X.

Does the Slate FG-X require an Ilok?

Another one bites the dust.   And I was really looking forward to place my order.

The Ilok is the devils work. I just know it is....

Only if you deem it so.

I've had no problems. I have about 10 packges on iLok. However, I do not travel frequently so my iLok stays connected to my DAW unless I have to take it to the other side of the room to laptop.

How does this thing run on XP - on an ok but not fantastic system?

This question is for user number 2.

Strikingly,

If you are on a "so so" system I would not put this thing on a master bus in a full fledged project. I would export the "mix" into a separate project and "master" it there using FG-X (and any additional mastering plugs you choose to use; i.e. EQ, stereoizer).

BTW, in my world I'm user #1 since CW says I'm the only licensee of their products. Or summat like that.

Thanks user 1. Sounds about right having a separate projects to mix and master. I'm tempted by this thing.

It's great for all genres of (harder) rock. At least it is for me. YMMV (as ourolpal says).

How friendly is this FG-X to the CPU?  Does it drain, is it a memory hog, or is it efficient and friendly?  I know that it is not a big deal if we use it just for mastering.  I am more and more seeking and giving preference to CPU friendly plugins (when possible).

It's CPU heavy. That is why I use it in a mastering project only, although I have gotten away with it in medium grade projects before.

Bapu, even on your new rig with the i7 2600k it causes a strain on the CPU?

I would've thought the older CPU's like mine would be the one's to have issues with the FX-G....

Not really a strain, just very noticeable spike on core 1. Besides, I'm pretty much ingrained into mix, export 24bit mix, use wavelab to clean up details, save and then import 24bit mix into a fresh SONAR project to master and then export final mix.

Hi
I have Ozone 5 but do not like the limiter so use either Xenon or Barricade.
How does Slate compare / better Xenon or Barricade - is it just a loudness thing or does it "sound" better? - sounding better is why I use either Xenon or Barricade instead of the limiter in Ozone - I can hear a noticeable improvement.
Anyway thanks for anyone's thoughts
Nigel

just tried it again (lost one more demo slot on my demo ilok !!:())

No crashole , i guess it was a old version issue !!..sounds good , transaparent and when it saturate , you hear it obviosuly ....the thiong is that inner sample passes ...i have didgital clip even if it seems its limiter output is set to -0.1 ..i go up above 0 on some samples ... not workaround or option in the plugin .?

Sad to have to put another brickwall after it !

Zo,
I'm not saying you're wrong but I've never had FG-X go above what I set it to. IOW if I set it to -0.3db that is what I get.

Re:Slate FG-X $100 at Audiodeluxe. 2012/05/03 21:27:33
You guys talked me into buying this one.  Of course, the audiodeluxe price surely helped; using their mastering 20% discount put the total price down to $99.99.  Given FG-X's claim for transparency, it should be a good tool to use as BAPU does and who wrote above:  "I would export the "mix" into a separate project and "master" it there using FG-X (and any additional mastering plugs you choose to use; i.e. EQ, stereoizer)."

My thoughts are to use use TRacks and OZone for some pre-mastering to give the EQ minor coloration or fine adjustments which their tools do so well.  Then (as Bapu does) I can export the project to wave, open in Sonar and use FG-X for final mastering stage.  Does this sound reasonable?
