Running recorded tracks back through a hardware channel strip?

     Im assuming this is the same concept as using midi to control a hardware keyboard, I would send the recorded track out to the channelstrip then back into my interface right? If I want to try this on midi, would i have to export it into audio and then load it back into the project as a wav file, or would it work fine as a regular midi track?

Midi isn't audio - it's just data.

But you could still run the associated audio track out and back in again, though you would need to capture that as recorded audio at some point, so you might be wise to freeze your synth before you start.

Yes, midi has to be converted to audio before an analog strip can affect it.

Once it is audio you can, of course.  It is just like any other audio.  I freeze my midi, copy and paste it.  Then I unfreeze the midi track (so it is midi again) and archive it in case I need to edit the thing.

This may be a bit beyond where your at recording wise,

But if you  re-amp..........an audo track.................basically send audio out of the box for processing then bring it back in. 

Depending on your DAW software and how your set up, your gonna want to run a loop back test on that signal.

 Basically calculate the round trip latency on that signal chain.

Then you can nudge the audio back to a place of being somewhat sample accurate.

It may or may not matter to you that much, just thowing it out thereGood Luck.

First one must ask why you are wishing to do this? And do you have a proper audio interface? How many outputs does it have? Are you just wishing to process the MIDI generated track somehow?

Thanks for responses. Alright so here's why: Im picking up a 737 at the end of the month that i want to use on a ksm44 i just ordered. I've spectated the avalon aloooot and personally really enjoy its compresor and eq. I find them to be very powerful, and very pleasing to my ear, and If i can put that kind of power behind my other tracks besides vocals, that would make me a happy camper. I MOSTLY work with midi, which i enjoy but have never really been satisfied with the sonitus bundle. Thats probably cause i use processed radio ready drum samples, so its hard to get my other tracks to keep up with that using just a basic software fx bundle

So my point is i would be more than willing to take the time and bounce all of my midi work in to audio if that would make me able to run them through the avalon.

like I said, you can just freeze the track and use that audio to stem out and record back in.  Then unfreeze and archive the midi, which takes it out of the CPU strain but you have your original midi tracks to edit if need be.

Keep the audio.

I do this midi soft synth whether or not I'm sending it out for analog processing (stereo comp/limiter, RND channel strip, Roland chorus echo, etc.

Well if I new what da heck a ksm44 was I might help, I do know what a 737 is but seems it be a little large for my own place.  

 

737 is an avalon tube strip.

It is also a plane.  Probably a lot of other stuff, too.

Ha my bad Sock monkey avalon 737 is the channel strip ive been having wet dreams about. ksm44 is a mic made by shure that im also very fond of. Thankyou AT for telling me about that, i run alot of omnisphere and trilian so anything i can do to save cpu is a done deal. Also i forgot to mention im using a focusrite saffire. I'VE BEEN TOLD, that my converters are more than enough until i feellike dropping mad money on some quality ones, and obviously since im picking up the avalon im not concerned with the pres. So AT in your experience do you find analog processing results to be much more pleasing than software effects?

In addition to the Track Freeze function, you also have the option just to freeze the synth.

This creates an audio wave, mutes & disconnects the synth (thus freeing up resources), and you have the choice of options to apply to the freeze - Fx etc.

I find this much easier 7 quicker than freezing tracks, and by choosing not to include Fx with the freeze, I retain total control over what's in the rendered wav.
