If what you want is the sounds from within the Tyros then you have to do as Kalle said above and patch the audio outputs via the M box to your computer. This is then recorded in a audio track. There's a better way however and that's to record the MIDI first and then either use a soft synth or route the data back to the keyboard and then record it. This allows you to take advantage of the hundreds of editing feature of the software.
There is no sound transmitted over MIDI.
I think what is happening is you are hearing your on board sound card MS wave synth. This is the only explaination I can see that would explain hearing different sounds.
All the info on how to set up is in the help files but I agree it is a little bit much for first time users to wade through.
First you need to make sure you have set Sonar running right.
Most important of all is make sure you install the latest and the correct drivers for the M box I repeat - Most important!
Go to Sonars audio options and check that you are in ASIO mode and that the M box is your audio device.
Go to MIDI options and either choose the M box MIDI in/ out or the Tyros USB in/outs. Both will work the same.
Most Keyboards USB connection is for MIDI only and does not transmit any sound. If it does transmit sound then the Tyros would be an audio interface and you cannot have 2 interfaces connected at the same time.
You monitors should be plugged into the M box . Not your keyboard.
Otherwise you will not hear anything else you record .
You can use outboard MIDI hardware to play sound but you should try the many built in "soft synths" first. Every possible synth is available and this is the way most of us work. The only reason to choose an outboard hardware synth is when a certain sound is required that cannot be matched by a soft synth. This is rare.
So lets try one out:
The TTS-1 for starters. It is a GM 16 channel synth and uses all the standard sounds.
Go to views / synth rack/ there's a drop down to choose which synth.
Each synth has a GUI interface were you can customize millions of settings. Read the tutorial for details.
Now insert a MIDI track and assign it's output to the TTS-1.
If your keyboard is transmitting MIDI you will now hear , a piano, the default patch. All the GM sounds can be selected in the properties box.
You can now record that track.
If more sounds and tracks are needed you will have to use other channels.
