why gibson is less popular then fender these days?

I mean in seventies where we had the best music and sound ever gibson guitar dominated
and I loved its sound. Later on fender started taking a lead and the music deteriorated...
Clapton switched to fender guitars and many others as well, why is that???
Gibson not only sounds better but looks better so what the problem? price?
