Problems installing X2 Producer when C: drive has limited space

Beware that the SONAR X2 Producer installation will fail if your C: drive has too little space available, even if you don't put the files on C: drive and don't want to use the C: drive for software installation.  It appears that your C: drive has to have somewhere upwards of 6 GB free for the installation to succeed.  There is, however, a workaround (see below).

On my system, the first time I tried installation with the ...Part1 through ...Part4 files all in the same directory, it got as far as loading the Part3 portion, then gave an error message that something like "please download and run previous packages."  I also noted that I had a low disk space warning on my C: drive around the same time -- it went away a short while after the installation was aborted.

After this, I went onto my C: drive and did a cleanup, which removed a few files here and there, but there was still relatively low space.  (I detest when software puts files on C: without your knowledge, when you are doing custom paths specifically to manage partition sizes -- especially when it doesn't clean up after itself.)  Same result on trying the installation again.

I then deinstalled some applications I noted were using a bunch of space on drive C:, SONAR 8.5(!) among them.  This time I decided to run the files one at a time to make sure I was seeing exactly where things were breaking down.  It actually got into Part4 this time, but it ultimately bombed again with a message that read something like, "Unable to execute the required file: The following system error has occurred:  The system cannot find the file specified. (2)"

Looking around the forum to see if anyone else had encountered similar problems, I didn't find the exact system, but I did find some clues in a post at http://forum.cakewalk.com/tm.aspx?m=2666477, where Ryan Munnis indicates:

------
My recommendation would be to try wiping out the temporary files and then run part 1 again. You can find them by going to the Run Prompt in windows and typing in %temp%

SONAR X2 Producer extracts to %temp%\SONAR X2 Producer
SONAR X2 Studio extracts to %temp%\SONAR X2 Studio
SONAR X2 Essential extracts to %temp%\SONAR X2 Essential

Just delete the entire SONAR folder in the temp location and then give it another go. Hopefully that helps but please let us know.
------

I went out to a command shell in Windows 7, and found that %temp% was set to C:\Users\Rick\AppData\Local\Temp.

As I couldn't safely clean out anything else from my C: drive, the workaround I employed was as follows:

1) Run a command shell (CMD.EXE from the Start/Run box).
2) set TEMP=<some directory on a partition where you have plenty of space> (in my case, I used "set TEMP=T:\Temp\tmp").
3) Change directories to the location where the SONAR downloads reside, then run the ...Part1 file (still within the command shell)

This worked to get the Setup program running, and the installation succeeded, with two exceptions that I know of at the moment:

A) I had Dimension Pro 1.5 x64 installed already.  The installation program put up an error message that said I had a previous version of Dimension Pro installed.  This seems to have been harmless as Dimension Pro still worked when I ran it under SONAR X2.  I didn't have to reauthorize with the new X2-supplied serial number or anything.  (I believe that is expected, as I recall an earlier thread saying that we could use either serial number if we had multiple Dimension Pro 1.5 serial numbers.)

B) Rapture (full version) did not get installed.  I understand from some other threads that a separate installation program should have come up at the end of the SONAR portions of the installation, but it never did, and I'm pretty sure I had Rapture checked in the components to install (I certainly didn't uncheck it, but I'm pretty sure I saw it was checked when I was reviewing the components, too).  So my system only has Rapture64LE now.

    Hi Rick,

While this definitely seems like it would do the trick, there's an easier alternate solution if you're REALLY low on hard drive space.
    1. Install 7-zip from here: http://www.7-zip.org/   (by far my favorite archive utility)
    2. Download all of your Part1/2/3/4 files and place them in a single folder.
    3. Right-click over each .exe, one at a time, and select 7-Zip > Extract Here.
    4. When everything is extracted, click "Setup.exe".
    Hopefully that helps!

Thanks, Ryan.  I wasn't low on hard drive space, just C: drive space. :-(

Having known about the 7-zip thing earlier might have saved some time, but maybe not, because I'd have had to have first known about the requirement for C: drive space with the normal download EXE files, and I hadn't seen anything in the ReadMe documentation that said anything about that, so there was no reason for me to assume they'd use space elsewhere on the system (i.e. other than where the software was actually getting installed).

I might just try that for getting trying to just install Rapture again, though.  Thanks.

Great info.  I'm just now getting around to installing X2.  Same error message.  Search the Sonar fourm...nada.  Search Google and find your post.  Funny how things get lost.

Running a 6 Core AMD with a 70gig SSD a the boot drive.  I have 2 gig free.  Looks like I won't be installing X2 on my main DAW.

I agree Cakewalk should allow programs to be installed on any drive the user wants.  Being forced to use C drive....well let's just say... not happy.

Opened a trouble ticket with support and they replied within a reasonable time as usual with another download link.  It worked on my XP machine but not the Win7 with the limited hard drive space.

After reading you post, I won't bother to try anymore.  At least until I get a bigger boot drive.
Glad I don't do this for a living.

With the cost of hard drives so low these days, you could get yourself a 500GB or 1TB drive for $50-100 easily. Get a program that will clone the old c: drive to the new one and then swap them out. Hard drive performance starts to deteriorate if its more than 50% full, and if its your c: drive, the entire computer's performance is affected. If you have less than 15% available space, you can't even defrag the drive.

its not sonar as much as its windows, i believe xp used to just run files right off a hard drive but win 7 stores temp files for almost everything now a day because back in  the xp (or should i say B.C.) days hard drives were smaller, 40gb / 80 gb as a typical stock c drive.
now a day a 320 is a minuim off the shelf hd.
there for an install is less bound to fail with its files copied to user/app data/temp location

Hey Mark, there is a workaround that should work for you in the message at the top of this thread.  It involves setting a Windows parameter to put temporary files elsewhere.  A bit of a hassle, but worth it (and the only way to go) if you don't have enough C: drive space (at least unless something has changed since the original release of X2).
