VST reverse processing without bouncing to track

I've searched as much as I can, but I don't even know how to describe my problem!

I'm using a VST, let's say Virtual Guitarist.

I program it all perfectly but then when I want to drop in and make changes at a certain point all the previous control changes have not been processed so  I have the wrong strumming or it's even out of beat.

How do I instruct Sonar to process all the commands up to that point so that when I start the playback at let's say bar 42 I still get the actual result?

I hope I explained that.. It's not easy to put it in words!

I think your looking for automation envelopes to control the settings. This will do what i think your asking.

I've given it some thought... let me try explain some more.

I'm using midi input to control the VST...

Let's say I'm recording the midi commands for the Virtual Guitar and I programme a few changes to the strumming type during the course of my recording.

If I want to continue from where I stopped recording, the VST doesn't know of all the previous midi commands I've input and thus it will be out of sync or play the wrong strumming when I drop in at a bar at the end of that already recorded.

At the moment I have to listen from the start of the track to allow for the VST to pick up on the input I've given it and then I just start the recording as it nears the end of what has already been programmed. This is painful if the song is long because I'm listening through it just for the sake of all the commands being picked up.

I'm wanting to instruct it to process all the commands before that point in time and when I start the playback/recording it's a perfect representation of what it would sound like at that point as if I'd listened all the way from the beginning.

There is an option in Preferences called "Patch/Controller search on playback". I'll check exactly where when I'm at my DAW tonight. I think this will solve the problem.

    SO close.. But not it.

I think you got exactly what I need though.

Its not patch or controller changes. The thing is with these VST the midi-input is simply notes on a keyboard which controls the VST I.e. a C4 and F4 changes the chords to C and F and the F2 vs C2 would change the strumming type.

    Help.. It MUST be possible!!

It would be pretty unusual and in the ordinary case very annoying if a sequencer searched back for the last MIDI note and re-sent it even after it's note-off time.
I'd try the obvious, make the controlling notes last until the next one starts. A gapless legato line of control notes, so that wherever you start there'll be always a current note telling the plugin what to do.

Whether that solves the sync problem I can't tell. I don't know Virtual Guitarist, IIRC it plays snippets of audio loops in a rex file player style. It might be neccesary to set it to some syncing mode, so that it's able to start mid measure, if you do so in Sonar.
