I don't expect to see X2b at all at this point in the release cycle.  I base this on past experience.  However, there might be a chance of maybe a X2 Expanded based on what they did with X1.  That would be a paid release for a small amount that might give some new toys and a few tweaks.

Better yet, more upgrades for the Pro Channel plugins that allow for VST use at $20 a pop.

The longer they wait for (EDIT) X2b, the better. I hate to say that, but to Cakewalk: DON'T RUSH! Do it right. We're not cramming for a test. Let's fix bugs and fix things that people are griping about. In fact, why not offer up some surveys?

Not to become a sales guy, but my company provides its customers with the ability to use e-mail marketing to provide surveys with feedback to existing email lists. However, I will stress, that it's truly ethical. We disable accounts that violate good email marketing policies. What we provide in surveys, is something I would love Cakewalk to use. However, since this board is NOT to be used as a sales tool, I will not disclose our company name here and let Cakewalk contact me if they're interested in looking at this.

Expanded was a marketing mistake IMHO. Cakes QA dept I'm sure would have loved spending the extra time testing yet another build of the software distracting them from documenting bugs. I sure hope they don't do that again.

I agree with you, Beepster, that I don't want to wait too long, but I don't want them releasing X2b having only addressed some specific bugs, rather than going back in and REALLY addressing the most gripes here. I'm with you that things in X2a needs help, but I don't want Cakewalk to simply "toss" us a pacifier.

Yes, Expanded was a mistake IMO as well. It really didn't have much to offer anyone beyond what Producer already included, save some added bonuses. Adobe PS Extended has a valid reason for existing. There's liability controls placed in there for doctors, lawyers, and other Professional Services that have to rely on photography and measurements for criminal law and medical research. That's one of the markets for for PS Extended. Sonar Expanded really didn't seem to have this or anything that I would deem more Enterprise. I never got Expanded.

I just don't like the way they went about the release. It's all that Win8 gack. They should have waited until Win8 was fully released or offered a separate patch WITHOUT the Win 8/touchscreen mayhem for us who don't want it. Then once the Win 8 users have had a chance to test it and the Bakers got it running smoothly integrate it into final patch. It was just a sloppy way to go about it IMO. I will likely NEVER use a touchscreen unless it's as a peripheral on a tablet or something and there were already apps for that from what I understand.

I don't, either. This is where I find the business-end of the software overrules the technical end. Anytime new features are introduced, the risk of failure or issues rises, and less resources are available to re-test everything else. I think they did alright compared to other software companies around, but they could have been "better" than the others.

Re:Next update SONAR X2B...when? 2013/02/01 11:18:24 (permalink)
Simple reason. Cake was after the Xmas market so stripped out functionality that hadn't been developed fully. IE not ready. They then 'patched' it later. The MS release schedule of Win8 probably defined this strategy as well. I think it worked pretty well, apart from take lanes being half baked. I can't comment on touch screen. I won't be using it for several years. I don't see any reason why touchscreen functionality should not be included, I could argue the same about notation features. Just because I don't use it doesn't mean it shouldn't be included. It will be useful to somebody else.

I don't expect to see X2b at all at this point in the release cycle.  I base this on past experience.

Past experience? They normally do at least 2 updates per major release, with 3 probably being the norm, and 4 not being uncommon.

Plus, in the last few weeks I had a few issues I reported around the X2 launch time get sent to development while another was listed as fixed, so I can tell you they're actively working on fixes. One such issue was "Key Bindings Not Working With Event Durations" and another was "Give All Keystrokes to Plugin Not Working With Some Plugins (example: U-he DIVA)."

My guess is that the resolution to these issues will be in X2B along with a bunch of other fixes.

We have both worlds automatic or customization in SONAR.
I bet it will take +10 year before Pro Tools add that. They struggle just get it to run in Windows 7.
What was the last WOW-factor in Pro Tools. Whopping new technology be able to use 32bit files + realtime faders. WOW!! all other daws has more or less be able to do that in 15 years time. Pro Tools are years and years behind!

Still 32bit program and last DAW on market not be able to use more then 3GB RAM must feel 2013.

I'm hoping X2B will stop the asteroid collision happenning in the next hour. As always I'm happy to wait for X2B when it is ready and fully tested, it will come out soon enough. In terms of this kind of software actually no, it is not taking too long. I'd rather not see any enhancements to be honest until X3, other than take lanes (need of serious improvement) and ability to rename projects quickly within the UI.

I'm using it in primetime,i dont get it?
was is that isnt primetime qualified?
theres a few small things here or there that iritate me but nothing..
and i mean nothing that stops me from using this as my main daw,24/7

your opinion is just as important as mine,so im not going to say, your wrong.
but i will say it seems theres been a lot of positive feedback.

sometimes i get using a version and i dont even bother with the patches, like x1c was to me.
x2a is running marvelous here.

heres my latest project with 22+ tracks still going,as you can see my perfermance module says 20% used..i only have 8 gigs.
funny thing is,my hard drive is almost full and i only have about 10 gb left...lol
still smooth though

I'm in the same boat, but I already know that I can't depend on Cubase either... It has it's equivalent share of issues.

That's my current dilemma. I use to count on Sonar... even with bugs it made my work easier and more productive than any of the others... Hands down...

Now? It still has the same underlying engine, but the new trappings of the X generation have fouled so many things... and improved a few, but the ratio is far heavier on the down side (for me)...

But the competition is no better... Sonar used to be better, but it's now coming down to level with the others instead of above them (for me)... So at this point I simply continue to use it because I'm familiar with it... I will not be any happier or faster with the competition's products or I would already have switched!

I've always loved Cakewalk's products and their' very devoted team.... But I still work in awe of many current decisions....

So I'm trapped between a rock and a hard place.... and I stay with Sonar and belly-ache as my work fills me with frustration instead of joy.... It's amazing how something others might consider good or not important, etc. can affect others.... <sigh>

As with the name of my most recently completed song...

Feelin' So Sad

Yes I am!

I've got a feeling we won't see anything by way of an update until the summer (Northern hemisphere)

There might be the odd plugin, PC module, loops & synth addons and suchlike.

But this is just speculation of course - I haven't a clue, as per normal.

I think there will be an update in the next 6 weeks or so.

Roland is a company that is famous for hi quality build products and they won't be happy with Sonar I don't think. Look at how beautifully the control pages for octacapture etc work compared to Sonar.

Please make a scrub tool that doesn't drop out, version after version, on different compters and soundcards.
