X2a - Still unable to 'chase long notes'?
"If playback starts after a note start, the note will be played as though its start time were at the position at which playback started" Is this feature still unavailable in Sonar?

Is it too difficult for an old daw like Sonar to implement this? Or is it just because not many users want it?

Given that this won't guarantee the note plays back with the correct sound at the right time (think long attack), I think this is a good thing to protect users that SONAR doesn't. I can imagine the complaints that users could generate.

I dunno, I would like to see this as well.... but strictly as an option, of course. And with a full disclaimer based on what Kevin wrote - because the first time some loud synth patch blasted through someone's speakers unexpectedly you know they'll be pissed and will demand to know that on earth CW was thinking...

Would be good to have this as an option. I've used other DAWs that chase notes and found it more of a help than a problem.

This is a quote from the Personus Studio One 2 manual. Good catch. I don't use S1 for MIDI so wasn't even aware that this option was available.

Zonno This is a quote from the Personus Studio One 2 manual. Yep. When I first used S1, I thought "Wow!" stevec I don't use S1 for MIDI Good decision. Still an immature DAW for MIDI. Although I like the "Legato and Overlap Correction" feature (Want Sonar to have it as well).

@brundlefly - Good call, freeze does this far better than "chase long notes". @Zonno - Good catch, Sir.. @Jlien X - RE your comment "If they're not as buggy as Sonar" - I have not found Sonar any more "buggy" than most DAWS. Your comments seem to be somewhat loaded. It works very well here. Very few bugs.

But believe me, I love Sonar. That's why I've been using it for over 10 years.

All I see on the forum are increasing numbers of new users, almost on a daily basis Thanks for checking the links. These 'other members' are mostly Producer and Studio users, aren't they? If some Essential user could post here and tell me these features do work fine in his Sonar, I'd immediately contact tech support (Cake themselves confirmed the first issue as a bug in the Essential version, as I mentioned in the thread). As for the "system specific" assumption, my HP ProBook 4710s clears all requirements listed in the X2 Essential system requirements page (if T9600 is higher than E8200). So all the features in the X2 reference guide are supposed to work on my system. http://www.cakewalk.com/p..cts/SONAR/X2-Essential/ The "lots of Sonar users who ditched it in favour of S1" statement was for X1, and has nothing to do with the current bugs in X2. I made it confusing. Sorry about that (don't go any further ). BTW, I forgot to mention what I consider to be a major bug. The Colors option.

No problem I also agree that the lack of full colour customisation doesn't really contribute to a better workflow experience. I don't think of it as a bug though, just a half developed feature (which used to work, but has never been optimal) When you see some of the screens Panup has managed to create using nothing more than industry wide tools, it begs the question why can't Cakewalk implement this? This is one of the more frequent complaints that I read about, and it applies across the user spectrum - new users are disappointed and most of the older heads are perplexed (and disappointed)

stevec How does Cubase handle the attack portion when it picks up a note mid-stream? I strongly suspect the answer is "not very well", which is why I would still opt for freezing/recording tracks with long notes as soon as possible in the composition process. There's no way re-triggering a note in the middle of its duration is going to sound right, except in the specific case that it's playing a low-volume pad with a soft attack and timbre and amplitude that do not evolve significantly over time. I'm guessing the Bakers have looked into it, and decided it's not worth the programming effort given that it will sound wrong more often than right, and will probably generate more support calls and bug reports from users who don't understand the function's limitations, and why it so often gives bad results.

How does Cubase handle the attack portion when it picks up a note mid-stream? Cubase retriggers the note or arp from where you start playback. If you've got a really slow attack it will sound out of context. But if you've got a note 4 bars long or more triggering a synth arp and you want to work on a drum fill in bar 4 of that note it saves time to have the arp trigger from bar 3 or 4 so you don't always have to rewind to the beginning of the note. It's not helpful in every situation which is why it would be good to implement it as an option if you are going to have it. Freezing plugins is a good strategy in many circumstances but not when you are still tweaking the track (modulating an arp to work with a drum fill for example). Furthermore if you are working with hardware synths you've got to record the part to freeze it.

In the situation you're describing Martin, I would be inclined to insert separate whole measure length notes instead of one long note. If all you're doing is triggering an Arp then the attack portion of the note should pretty much contain all the useful audio data, unless of course I'm totally missing what you're doing. Bear in mind I haven't had any coffee yet this morning.

[quote}In the situation you're describing Martin, I would be inclined to insert separate whole measure length notes instead of one long note. Good point. But what about when you're using LFOs at 2/1 or longer for example. Of course they'll be triggered out of context in the situation we're discussing and that could be a problem. Guess it just depends on what is going to help in any given situation. :)
