Realtek ac97 compatibility

Hey guys I'm new to sonar and new to this forum, so I'd really appreciate if someone can help! I have installed sonar 4 onto my toshiba sattelite laptop, which has pentium 4, 80 gig hardrive and 512 ram, with a realtek ac97 as the only sound card/device. When opening sonar a messege window opens stating that the driver does not support the current audio format or is in use by another application , then asks me to disable or use anyway. Unfortunatley its the only sound card on my laptop. what can i do?

You're trying to open Sonar with a default setting that the card can't handle. You'll be tied to 44.1 and 16 bit, so make sure your Sonar Audio settings are set for that.
Buy a new soundcard but only if you are serious about recording of course. It's fine if you just want to mess around with it on your laptop.

thanks for your response! unfortunately the sonar setting are already at 44.1 and 16 bit. so it must be something else. any other ideas?

I noticed it always did that, that's why it's a good idea to disable the soundcard in Bios-but it depends on those settings in the Audio tab, and the Windows audio mixer . If you are going to use the AC97 then---Make sure the driver settings are for WDM, not ASIO, or MME if latency is not a concern. Make sure in windows that the acceleration is set for best in your recording and playback setting. Then reprofile in Sonar- you may just delete the aud.ini in your cakewalk folder and it wil reprofile for you. hope that helps.

Are the Windows sounds disabled?

I use a Toshiba Satellite and can wholeheartedly recommend ASIO4ALL, which will let you run the AC97 in ASIO mode and get usably low latency.

If you haven't got it already you can get it here.

I sometimes used to get that message you mention when I switched from using my FW1814, or Indigo I/O to using the AC97 on its own, but since using ASIO4ALL version 2 I can't remember seeing it . There are more features in v2 so it could be a factor.

Maybe because it's the one that came onboard his laptop.

The AC97 works fine with the ASIO4All drivers.
So doesn't most onboard laptop sound chips.

I tried ASIO4ALL on my Vinyl AC97, Works like Rice Crispys.

Snap, Crackle, Pop.

Staying with WDM for now.

AC97 is not my first choice - but when I'm on the move it drives my built in speakers better than the Indigo. We are not talking quality hear just ease of use. I use the FW1814 for multitrack recording and live use, and the Indigo for more serious on the move composition.

For someone starting out, though, the AC97 with ASIO4ALL is a great combination - I was sceptical to start with and didn't consider it usable until I tried it. Plugged into a guitar amp with a bit of drive - there is not much difference in sound between the AC97 and the Indigo

its recognizing the card now and all is well, except my input (a boss digital 8) track is getting around -30 db off white noise before i even send the signal from my 8 track, and when i do it pushes way into the red. i have to bring the master on my 8 track way down to keep it from doing so, but then the white noise is nearly as loud as my input. what am i doing wrong?

I'm struggling with the same problem as this. I have an AC97 soundcard and get the same error messages as the person who started this thread (these drivers don't support the current audio format or are in use by another application).
I downloaded the ASIO driver and still have the same problem.
Am i missing a step? I think i need to reprofile the soundcard but don't know how to do this.

Hi, I'm having the same problem with the Realtek 97 and Cakewalk Music Creator. I was told it uses the same basic engine as Sonar. Do you think you could explain how you fixed the problem?

i have a dell laptop (yea i know, im lazy!) heh inspiron 5100
and i get the same error messege..
tried that ASIO for all, b/c i know nothing about computers,
and thought it would help.. no dice

i tried wave profiler and got this:

I too had a realtek when I started this endevour 3 months ago. Replacing the sound card is one of the 1st things you should do. It makes all the difference in the world and once you get it set right u can just leave it alone.

Why don't you start with the 48k as it's the only option....?

You have to set the card's and Sonar's audio parameters both to 48k/16 bit and you should be ready to go - sort of.

I have a Dell Inspiron 6000 with the same Sigma Tel C-Major error message. I downloaded ASIO4ALL 2.5, installed it, and selected ASIO from Audio/Advanced/Driver Mode in SONAR Audio options. It worked like a charm. Perfect playback and no additional noise. Make sure you select ASIO as your driver mode.

When you get that sort of theing in the wave profiler it usually means that you have the sample rate locked on the soundcards control panel. Unlock it, reprofile the card, and try again.
