subwoofer placement

I'm going to purchase a Paradigm pdr8 subwoofer. I would like to put it under my television set (very small room/few placement options), but would need to put it on its side to do so. Is placement under television with only two inches vertical clearance advisable? (ample clearance on sides/front/back for heat dispersion, I believe) Placement on its side advisable? Inquiring minds and all that. Thanks. For that matter....
I have two Paradigm Titans, and a Panasonic HE SA70 (100W X 6, whatever that translates into RMS). Any inexpensive sub recommendations? Thanks.

Well, you will find that contrary to what the people at the store might have told you, you cannot just stick it anywhere and expect it to sound good.

Subwoofer placement is critical, especially in an untreated room. Especially if it is a room of less than 1000 square feet (20' x 50').

If you actually want to achieve optimum placement: put the subwoofer in your normal listening position and then walk around the room listening. The spot (or spots) where the bass is the loudest are the best places to put the subwoofer.

As to your actual question, make absolutely sure that the subwoofer is shielded before you put it anywhere near your TV.

I would be a little concerned about the the amount of vibration your TV will be subjected to by the close subwoofer placement.

In the end it's up to where you can place it, but those are my thoughts.

    Placement on its side advisable?

Well, from what I can tell from the picture it is a cube, so what would be the advantage of placing it on it's side? If it is designed to fire downwards placing it on it's side would not be a good idea, unless it was against a wall and the woofer was using the wall like a floor. However, drivers that are desingned to be mounted down firing actually are built slightly differently than ones that are mounted vertically, so the driver itself will not like to be placed any other way than the way that the speaker was designed.

Thank you very much, nprime. It is not shielded, something I ass/u/me/d, but looked it up, thanks to you. While almost a cube, it would have fit under my tv on its side, but don't know how it fires, as couldn't glean that from the Paradigm's spec sheet (I'm not spec savvy, and it didn't say anything obvious, like "down-firing", et al. Moot point now, as it's not shielded, so I'll squeeze it in a corner. Don't think placement is too critical for me, as I'm just looking for a little low end to support the Titans musically, and movies are a bonus, not first and foremost. Thanks again.

One more question. Just how close is too close for my subwoofer/tv configuration? I have a corner that would put the sub about two feet from the tv, with my stereo cabinet in between. Is that an adequate distance?

Just have the TV on when you place the sub, you will know if it is too close, the effects are not subtle.

By the way, don't freak out if a near encounter appears to have caused permanent damage by warping the color, the TV will usually recover within a day or two...usually.

By the way, don't feel like you have to have the sub on the same wall as the speakers. If it is not a very large room it will not matter. I have also been told that subs can benefit from being up off the floor and sitting on anything really sturdy, if that helps you with placement at all... sometimes a great place for the sub is right up agaisnt the back of the listening chair, that way the chair actually vibrates with the bass energy, it's very effective at lower volumes.

    Have fun!
