i like it. seems like it needs to be balanced better in the mixing process....but you did say its experimental.

the melodys really brings these piece together...the drums seem a little low. i wouldnt bring them up to much...maybe up just a notch.
very easy to listen to.

is the voice type sound a sample in the background? what did you use. what did you use for the guitar sound? i like the struming string effect.

im glad i came online......this just put me in a good mood.

the guitar sample and midi strum patterns are from a Computer Music magazine coverdisc from a few months back that I hadn't got around to using before
and then that strum pattern goes into an arpeggiator

that voice is an Absynth patch that combines that moaning with some static alien noise
gets pretty lost in some sections
so the way that usually works is some sort of small wav file with a ton of processing

i like the beginning where the minimalist detuned piano part combines with the voice to create a sort of melody

the rest
really doesn't hold together for me very well

I thought this was excellent. Really enjoyed it. The drums could possibly have been more prominent, but apart from that i thought it was great. Put it this way, if i was compiling an album of your tunes this would be near the top of the list. The opening was one of your best so far imo and it sounded just as good to me after that. 9/10.

well. you know, i've bought a lot of those magazines thinking I'd use at least one of 1000 samples on the CD and never have

this was one case where the guitar samples were so well done and then they had these guitar chord patterns that actually follow the convention for guitar range and note selection.
and with all these useful samples I'm running out of room on my hard drive everything on there has to pull its weight now.

blipp,
i don't know.
this needs some work
a lot of volume levels are kinda jumpy
and it needs more structure -- repeating every pattern twice isn't doing much for me
it's a sketch that has some pieces much further along than others

I may strip it way back and build it back up

how's your flu?

blipps not sick...hes just so overwelmed with one of my piano pieces, that it takes up all of his time trying to match its perfection.

Maybe you've heard it too many times during the making of it and that has influenced how you feel about it as i know this happens to me quite a lot. Just before i posted my Atoms Collide track for the first time i was 75% in favour of scrapping it completely, but i thought what the heck and posted it. I'm glad i did'nt now, but it just illustrates how we are'nt always the best judges of our own music. Remember, this is'nt an exact science and if some people like it then it must be ok. I'm not saying don't try and improve it, just don't scrap it. I think it's a really great track with a wonderful chord progression. There's nothing wrong with repeats either really, some of my fave tracks repeat lines all the way through.

A bit better thanks, but will probably be a few more days yet till i'm fully fit.

speaking of which

interesting early discussion on podcasting at the soundclick electronica forum

This may be something that project5.com could look into
that would be cutting edge

Hi Wrench,

Another nice tune. My favourite parts are probably where the detuned chords are the major focus (the intro, 2:30 onwards for a bit and 4:00-4:20ish) - those parts are absolutely wonderful to my ears, the syncopation of the changes and their progression is just great. Keep it coming!

RE: new wrench piece at audioshots 2005/02/27 09:38:43

that detuned processed piano is one preset from a set of two very small banks from the Absynth User Library that are 'designed' to be Boards of Canada like

that and the processed moaning voice started out as a BoC type piece
but then we got into the usual chord progression explorations

but i'll definitely be returning to those Absynth BoC presets -- those detuned, blurred sort of My Bloody Valentine presets are great

i'm finding it pretty interesting how different pieces -- different levels of drive or 'aggression' require different engagement/relationship with the listener

but if I start talking about it things'll get heady in a hurry
I'll just say this a quieter piece than the last few

WOW...I actually forgot to listen to this piece after making a note to check it out after work the first time!

LOVE ( I mean absolutely LOVE ) that guitar work! What synth IS that?

And the detuned piano is very cool! Im impressed with this completely!! I had to log back in and vote it HOT!!! BTW, this is my favourite of yours!!

edit: curious...what is the current chart rating on this one?

RE: new wrench piece at audioshots 2005/03/01 20:57:24

thanks DA

the guitar samples and midi strum patterns are from a Computer Music coverdisc about November or so -- this is the steel strings set

i've been told that ERA sequencer and arpeggiator that the Wood Man was looking at has some excellent strum patterns

the detuned piano is a newer Absynth user bank from Jeremiah Goertz in the style of Boards of Canada -- my context is more smeary My Bloody Valentine -- but i can't quit using this preset -- it's alrerady in the start of my next project

as to charts position
the previous tune is still charting despite the fact that this one had twice the plays and downloads yesterday -- this has happened to me before and as far as I can determine there's no explanation -- even the veterans on the soundclick electronica forum urged me to not bother to try figuring it out -- consequently that initial surge of plays sometimes doesn't get charted -- oh well

this tune has grown on me
ed, one of my favorite (of few) critics on the song forum, pointed out this could be a breezy pop tune

Nice.

I'm kicked back on white sand beach, a drink with an umbrella in hand
Like the mood shift @ at 2:30
I really like the way the percussion and bass lines work together and also the way the complex pads work together.
what did you use for the Vox pad?
