ok outside of velocity, npulse (which i really dont care for), what are some good drum instruments. Even if I could just find more wav files for drum kits, that would be good. I went to KVR and there is so much. Just lookin for recommendations. I have another post about Synchron 32 so I still dont get the benefit of that. Enlighten me please.

I'm guessing that you are into programming at the beat level so I don't know if my suggestion will be of any use for you. In any event, I am very pleased with both Linplug's RM-IV and Spectrasonics RMX Stylus.

I've used the FXpansion DR-008 (full upgrade from a version bundled with Sonar 2) for a good while, and it's worked out pretty well. Lots of nice kits available for download, if you're a registered customer.

However, DR-008 has not been updated in a while -- Angus has focused on BFD (fabulous acoustic drum VST) and on the new Guru virtual beatbox, and the planned Drum Nine successor to DR-008 hasn't materialized. Since I have Komplete 2, Battery arrived in my mailbox a few months back, and it seems a lot nicer than the original Battery.

That said, my next purchase will be either Stylus RMX and some Xpanders, or a new DAW. I'm a bit concerned about some reported compatibility issues with Sonar (or vice versa; Spectrasonics seems to think the problem with losing sync are on the Sonar side). Assuming those get worked out -- Stylus RMX provides ways of working with beats and grooves that are way beyond anything any other product can do, and it sounds great.

You haven't said what kinds of drums you want -- acoustic, electronic, shaped noise, whatever.

My favorite is BFD (with the add-on libraries and Jamstix). Fxpansion products have been great (I am assuming that VELOCITY was made by Fxpansion as well), and I am looking forward to GURU and Drum Nine. Linplug's RM-IV is also really nice. I haven't tried Stylus RMX and don't plan on buying it ever, but others have been blown away by it.

As for N-PULSE, it is an underrated synth. I like to run it through amp sims and other effects, and it immediately takes on a new existence. It can sound just as good as some of the expensive sample libraries if you combine it with some great effects, such as the new Camel Audio effects.

I use linplugs RMIV.

From a different perspective - if you're looking for something more electronic and experimental (ala Kraftwerk), you could go for a used Kawai XD-5 or try and find a copy of Waldorf's Attack! VSTi.

You might check out Devine Machine (the interface is a bit non-standard), Drumatic, JamStix (requires a different DXi wrapper or Chainer to work with P5), and I heard that either MusicLab's SlicyDrummer or Fill-in Drummer now works with P5. Haven't gotten around to check it out yet, tho.


EDIT: Rayzoon is offering a JamStix/Directixer bundle for $109.

EDIT: MusicLabs has a new VSTi - DXi - Stand-alone "DrumTools Performance Designer" -- successor to SlicyDrummer and Fill-in Drummer MIDI plugins. There's a special upgrade price for owners of either.

Just say NO!

I usually go with RMIV for percussion sounds. However, I have just discovered Jamstix. It's biggest feature is to analyze your composition and jam along. It comes with a decent set of sounds. If you don't like those, you can use it to host another drum VST or output the MIDI to another VST. You do need to use DirectiXer as a wrapper, though.

Don't forget to tip the guy at the piano.

I see that someone already pointed out the NaturalStudio drums, and I would echo that recommendation.

Also, for cheap drum kits, check out the drumkits from Wizoo. They come in LM-4 format (which Velocity and every other drum sampler reads) and cost about $12 each.

Yup, and if, like me, you have zero talent in the percussion dept, it's really simple to get something decent and (reasonably) original out of it. It does that that area that turns it into a proper drum machine, but that place scares me. Much nicer just putitng looks together, putting them through the chaos thingy and..um.. stuff. :)

I mean, why get RM IV or Battery when you have Velocity? For the included sounds you could make yourself form the massivce amounts of samples out there? Hmmm....I did that...I got RM IV...I ONLY use it when using the drumsynth part of it..and that only rarely. Othewise, I stick with velocity and dig for samples.

And y'all leave nPulse alone. j/k I love nPulse. It is a great Drum Synth. A shame they didn't give us some new tones to work with though.

Sonic Charge MicroTonic. Great drum synth if you like electronic drums. You can get some really weird and wicked sounds out of it. 69 dollars only.

IMO nothing on the market even comes close to Battery2 for drum VSTs.

Regarding synchron, I don't think it has had a real purpose in P5 since V1.5 when they integrated the piano roll with the step sequencer view. It's a legacy instrument.

thanks guys for all the great responses. I didn't realize you could "dig" for drum samples. Even after I did it, I was left with the feeling that there really isnt one great source for free samples. Although it seems like I am hearing you can make your own by tweeking the settings maybe in nPulse. I had figured that, but didnt seem like I was getting much variation or sounds I liked. I guess I am going to hold off on RM-IV, but I did really like just having a bunch of sounds to pick from as opposed to making them myself. It reminds me of the old using other people's loops vs. making your own dilemma of which I always said I prefer to make my own.

I am glad to hear that Synch 32 could be considered "legacy." I still have to try the triggering off an entire pattern though from pressing a key, that sounds like a groove matrix to me. Anyway I am babbling thanks guys!
