Making "guitar" based tracks in P5

I'm sure I'm not the only one who uses P5 with guitars so how about a few clues to the guys and gals who'd like to make P5 guitar songs,

Here's a run down of how I do it (there are probably lots of other ideas, lets hear them).

1: Program the recod button so that it can be triggered from a midi device. I use the sustain pedal on my keyboard.
2: Get a riff you like, us the tap button to get P5 to about the right tempo
3: Set up a simple drum track, I usually just drag a drum loop from the explore view into the groove matrix.
4: Setup an audio track, monitor the input your guitar is on and add a amp sim or what ever effects you want. Set the audio track to record mode (hit the little red button on the track, but don't record yet)
5. 1 : Method one. Set the drum loop going and play your riff in time, over and over again. Once you've got it going and are happy hit the record swicth (my sustain pedal) and record the riff a number of times. Once your hapy hit stop. Now go to the audio and slip edit it until you find the take you like start to finish. Hit CTRL-L to groove loop it and drag it into the groove matrix

5.2: Method 2. Set the loop points to the length of the riff you are going to play. so if you have a two loop riff set the loop points to that length. hit play and get the drum loop going. As with 5.1 hit the record switch when ready. Hit stop after a number of loops.
Project 5 will have created a number of track layers for each recording of the loop, find the one you like, (use the mute) and groove loop it and drag into the groove matrix.

Thats the basic setup. Next thing to do is to either record other instruments, or record guitar parts for the chorus, middle 8, opening, and closing using the above method. Once you've got them, do the same for bass and vocals.

With everything in the groove matrix, you can either dracg and drop them on to the arange view and streach them out to create a song structure, or use the record groove matrix function and do it that way. There you, basic song.

Other ideas anyone ?

Interesting, Andy; I'm going to try some of those ideas when I have time. My main method so far is to record my riffs in Sonar, using punch points instead of having to hit record on cue, and then when I'm satisfied with it, export it as a RIF wave file or save it as a groove clip.

Yeah...it's a PITA to try and record audio (e.g. guitsar) improvisation in P5V2. This is my one disappointment with an otherwise great program. I covered most of my concerns in another thread:

    http://forum.cakewalk.com/tm.asp?m=474963&mpage=1&key=񳾽

Truth be told, I find it onerous to try and record guitar in P5V2. My workaround is to slave P5V2 to Live with rewire. Then I have the best of both worlds - P5V2 midi with its arpegiator and softh synths and LIve for its clip ability in audio and routing flexibility.

I'm still hoping that P5V2.? will improve the ability to point to clips inside of larger audio segments with out the steps you outlined.

In the mean time I think your work flow is the only way to go inside P5V2.

I had a 5 hour jam yesterday with my Taylor, six pack of Bud and P5V2. P5 did a great job, find the best parts of the jam right click and split clips(?) throw them into the groove matrix and keep going. I even added vocals and edited them the same way. This is so much better than using P5v1, I used to have record my guitar in another program export the audio and open it in P5 with the dreaded groove player. Only problems I ran into is I broke a string and ran out of beer.

Have any of you guys found a way to pull your recently recorded, split and groove looped audio clips into the groove matrix without hitting stop? I am looking for a way to keep the groove rolling while recording and so far haven't been able to discover a way to use that audio bass or guitar line in the groove matrix without hitting the breaks on the tune.

    Is this even possible?

Ok, I'm a really basic guitar player, so this one might have a duh factor for those P5'rs who know one chord more than me (that would be ten or so). But what the hey - I came across an interesting effect a while back when using Acid (cue drug joke) that I'll get around to trying in P5 one of these days.

The track was based around two repeating four bar riffs, so I......
Recorded me playing the riffs through the full four minute track
Sliced several chunks of the riff from various parts of that track
Stitched a copy of the original track together from the samples

Hey presto - a really nice effect, where the interaction of the rigid loop-based track and the looser timing of the "played" track caused a random flange and chorus effect throughout the entire piece.

Now someone's going to tell me there's an easy way to do that with effect automation (sigh).

Just to hijack this a little Are there any good tutorials for getting some nice chunky riffs with sampled guitars? I would like to make some more industrial stuff and have the Monzter Guitars sampleset, as well as the Vintaudio Electric guitar sets, but despite my best efforts, the riffs I come up with sound either weak, lame or just plain crap Any tips?

    Muchas gracias!

No, it's not possible. This was clarified by Cakewalk as an addendum to the original P5V2 video which suggested it could be done. Evidently, the audio tracks aren't really there until you hit stop. At that point you can use as you wish.

I've been using this method. I've been doing mainly guitar track songs. Using P5 as SONAR junior on steroids. I'm probably doing everything totally opposite of the way someone pitched the idea of P5 to the guys in the boardroom.

    Hi Andy,

It seems as though you have some experience on Project 5. I am considering purchasing this program but have limited experience. What I want to do... is .. I play guitar and piano...and sing. I want to be able to record my songs vocal and guitar into project 5 and add more music such aas drums base and the like wwith it.. Is this a possible avenue for Project 5. Like i said I dont know much about it but If it will do these things I will buy it.. can you help or offer suggestions...

    Thanks

    Hi Jim,

Depends what you want to do with P5. If you want to play a guitar and sing at the same time and record both then P5 is frankly not for you. At the moment P5 is limited to one stereo in at a time (a resonable restriction given what it's designed to do) so you'd need to record your Guitar (or acoustic Piano) and then go back and record the vocals after.

So first up, am I right in saying you want to record both guitar/piano and vocals at the same time ?

    HI ANDY,

    THANKS FOR T HE REPLY......

WELL NO... I AM PLANNING ON RECORD EACH SEPARATELY.....LIKE PLAY THE GUITAR , THEN VOCALS.....THEN PIANO... ALL SEPARATELY.....BUT IM NOT SURE IF PROJECT 5 WILL DO THIS.. THATS THE MILLION DOLLAR QUESTION.

I AM LOOKING FOR A PROGRAM TO DO ALL THE XTRA ADDS LIKE PROJECT 5....BUT ALSO ALLOW ME TO DO VOCALS, GUITAR ETC.. ONE AT A TIME ON SEPARATE TRACKS,,,THEN MIX THE SPECIAL FEATURE THAT PROJECT 6 HAS AND MIX IT ALL TOGETHER TO MAKE A CD....BASICALLY A HIGH TECH STUDIO WITH GUITAR AND VOICE ADDED...

I DONT HAVE THE HARDWARE SUCH AS A MIXING BOARD AND THE MAP SNA DALL THAT IN A TYPICAL STUDIO.. SO IM LOOKING FOR A PROGRAM THAT OFFERS ALL OF THIS....

IF PROJECT 5 WILL DO ALL OF THIS GREAT.. ITS COSTLY SO I JUST WANT TO MAKE SURE IM BUYING SOMETHING THAT WILL DO WHAT I WANT RATHER THAN BUY IT AND REGRET IT...ANY SUGGESTIONS >?

I THINK YOU KNOW WHAT IM TRYING TO ACCOMPLISH....YOU SEEM TO BE PRETTY SAVY ABOUT ALL THIS STUFF... SO LET ME KNOW OR SUGGEST SOME PROGRAMS I MAY LOOK AT IF PROJECT 5 CANNOT DO WHAT I WANT..

    THANKS A MILLION..

Hi Jim, welcome to the forum!

First of all did you make it to the Project 5 "Music Perspired" Demo at Guitar Center on Westheimer Monday nite (June 13th)? If you had, you would've seen "West Coast Product Specialist" Michael Prager using Project 5 to record on Guitar a jam based on ELP's "From The Begining" (and very nicely done I might add ). Now if only we can get him to post it at Project 5 dot com (you knew i was gonna say that Mike!).

I use Sonar PE 4, Live 4.13, Tracktion, Acid 4, Sound Forge 7.0b, and I've been using Project 5 Ver 2 for a short while and it's now my preferred method of recording guitar.

Where are you at in Houston BTW? If you try the demo here. I think you will be suitably impressed. If not, I'd like to know what it was you found lacking. I don't think the Dimension synth is included on the demo but the piano on the DS-864 should cover the piano parts you want to record untill you get the full version...

    Don't be a stranger here

Tell me more. I'm not impressed with P5V2 as a guitarist's tool. Don't get me wrong. I own P5V2 and there is much I love about it - the arpegiator, Dimension, overall midi manipulation, the other soft synths and Device Chains - but I am finding it either lacking or onerous in my style of guitar recording.

I'd love to hear more about your experience. Right now I am finding Live my best bet for audio and P5V2 my best bet for midi. In fact, lately my de facto set-up has been P5V2 rewired into Live. But I am always open to new ideas.

And Please, Please, Please (for the casual observer) this is NOT an invitation to start a flame war over which program is better. I am simply trying get new ideas and workflows.

    what's a wiki?

Here's a snippet from a great definition I found on ExtremeTech:

A wiki (derived from the Hawaiian term for quick) is ... a small piece of server software that allows users to freely create and edit Web content using any Web browser and no other special tools.
    ...
[IOW] a wiki is "the simplest online database that could possibly work." No HTML or programming knowledge is needed to contribute to a wiki.
    ...
Any and all information in a wiki can be changed or deleted by anyone ... Unlike protected Web pages, articles added to a wiki are at the editorial mercy of the wiki's other participants. Ward Cunningham, coauthor of the book The Wiki Way: Collaboration and Sharing on the Internet, refers to this aspect of the wiki as "fragility." There is trust involved in the development of a wiki. Cunningham's book comes with a CD-ROM that enables you to create a wiki easily on a Web server.

[A]ny flames or spam can be immediately removed so that wikis imbue good participants with a kind of survival-of-the-fittest power. "You need to generate real content," says one wiki source on the Web. "Anything else will be removed. So anyone can play, but only good players last."

Cunningham also draws many distinctions between wikis and blogs. "Blogs and wikis are polar opposites in many ways, though they're seen as similar" he says. "A blog tends to reflect the biases and opinions of an author, while a wiki is more like an open cocktail party. In a wiki you try to speak without a strong voice, seeking consensus to create something permanent, while on a blog you're developing your own voice and it's very much about your voice."

Cunningham also points out that you can go away from a wiki and come back at any time to pick up a conversation without much inconvenience, which isn't the case with e-mail-centric group discussions. "E-mail doesn't self-organize," he emphasizes.

In terms of future trends for wikis, Cunningham says "there's a lot of interest in combining the timelessness of wikis—the fact that you can go away from them and come back—with the attention-grabbing aspect of blogs. Integrating blogs and wikis is a hot item right now."
