MOTU 828 MKII Problem

I have owned innumerable pieces of MOTU audio stuff over the years and never had a problem before. I'm hoping someone has seen this.

I got the unit a few days ago from Musician's Fiend - it installed fine on both my main computer and my laptop (both win XP w/ TI based firewire). It has been working fine for 2 days and then tonight - just before jam when I needed it - my computer refused to detect it's presence. When I tried to fire up the audio console or cuemix I just got an error that told me I didn't have any MOTU firewire hardware connected.

I went to the control panel and found no MOTU drivers installed - even when I clicked on "show hidden devices". I did several rounds of uninstalling/reinstalling to no avail. I did system restore to the point just after insalling the drivers in the first place. The 828 MKII appears to not reveal itself to the computer. I get the same behavior on both computers using different cables so I am ruling out the possibility of 2 bad cables or 2 bad firewire ports.

It does appear to work fine in standalone mode.

To make matters worse, when I took it out of the rack I seriously scratched the anodyzing. I am simply screwed. Any help would be appreciated as I know it's gonna be a **** to get any timely help from MOTU.

Thanks,

Same EXACT problem here, except i,ve been using mine trouble free for a month. I get the same no detection errors-CODE 10 sound familiar. I tried all the same fixes and then some for 2 days now. No drivers installed for this device-the new ones on motu web site produced the same results. Someone help us! Regars, John in Honolulu-If you get a handle on this please e-mail me personally, as will I. Thanks

Have you contacted MOTU yet? I'm going to fill out thier tech support thing this morning. I really want to know exactly what's wrong with it and have it fixed. For the 2 days that it worked I loved the thing. I was even considering getting a second one.

    Holy Crap!
    You guys are scaring me.
I got mine two weeks ago. Just in time for the 13-hour on-location recording Saturday. There are a couple minor problems with the units so they are boxed up again awaiting the swap at GC.

Is there any kind of RESET to factory defaults settings on the unit?

We may also want to look for a MOTU forum to see if there is a work-around/cause.

Having had a career as an electronics service technician I decided use an old troubleshooting technique and sniff the firewire ports on the back of the unit. Smelled like crispy critters to me. Very scary. I shipped it back to Musician's Fiend for replacement. I hope they don't send me yours.

S/N 828 2114958 Main Outs 12dB quieter than the rest of the outputs and the S/PDIF meters were almost always flickering.

S/N 828 2113655 Mic Pres muddier than the other unit and hum pretty bad past 3:00.
