Hello again everyone. As I had mentioned on another thread, Peter Gabriel is holding a remix contest for his song "Shock The Monkey" on his website for Real World Records.

He released the original multi-track audio of the song for download, and let people do anything and everything they wanted in order to remix it.

I went to work and spent a long time playing, tracking, mixing, etc. and now the work is finally done. Just to make others aware, this is not your ordinary remix, and the style may not be to taste, so try to keep an open mind. If you are interested and can spare a few minutes, please go here to listen:

http://www.realworldremixed.com/remix.php?remix_id=lxQuYuCTPbeyB1JX

Also, if it's not too much trouble for some of you to vote, or post feedback, I would very much appreciate it as it could very well determine if I win, lose, or even place in the contest.

For that you will need to create an account (free of course, and no spam). It a pretty cool site if you are into music, and there is some cool remix work being done there.

I took note of critiques pople at this site gave to my last mix, and tried to correct where I could. There is zero compression on the drum this time, though you -might- hear some high frequency loss/artifacts as well as some phase issues in places because the contest rules mandated that I upload a heavily compressed 128kbps MP3 in order to fit under the 4.5MEG file size limit.

Of course, Sonar 5 Producer was the platform of choice for this monster of a file (300+ tracks & 13.2 GIG of audio data) and the full details are listed on the Real World Records site where my track is posted.

Thanks again for those who took time to comment on, and complement my previous work. It helped to keep me going.

THANK YOU! :)

Wowza--Fascinating---Um, an interesting read through the comments posted at that site too. There are gremlins everywhere there's a bulletin board I'm afraid. And I mean Everywhere--including some Cakewalk Forums. ahem.

Amazing accomplishment. Hope you win that contest! Hope you get to hang out with Peter Gabriel too. 8-)

Thank you very much!

Yes, you are right about trol..err, Gremlins. Some people just have a bad day and have to spread the love ;-)

Winning the contest would be amazing, as would meeting Peter Gabriel. Amazing! I suppose if I get enough votes and good feedback, he will at least hear my mix and I might have as good a chance as any, though I don't know if he will favor something more dance or electronica oriented? I guess we will see if it gets that far. Special thanks to you for listening, and to anyone else who stops by to listen, or rate my mix.

Thank you!

Hi Sean,

I thought you did a damn fine job on this - I saw some comments on the site and thought they missed the whole point. It's what you, the re-mixer, hears in the song that makes the experiment interesting. Very detailed, well thought out work.

That's a hell of a production. Well played, well arranged, well mixed. I do hip hop so I skipped the PG, but I'm remixing the Los De Abajo track even though there's nothing to win. I'll be happy if my track is half as good as yours.

JTwin, Thank you for the complement! Be sure to drop a line when you remix is done, as I would like to hear it.

Kenny, Thank you also for the encouragment! I put everything I had, and then some more into that mix... much of it was a learning process for sure. I am VERY happy that it is being so warmly received overall.

Here's to hoping it continues it's good run and makes it to Peter Gabriel's ears!

Any votes/top 10 slots or comments anyone can throw my way over at the Real World site are greatly appreciated, as are your kind words here. I am sure ol' Doghouse feels the same way

A Music Video for this mix has been posted by a very generous member of Real World.

Real World Records forum member 'Charisma' has sprung a very nice surprise for the top 3 mixes on this weeks Real World Top 20 chart.

She has taken these three mixes and set them over footage of the original 'Shock The Monkey' video. Let me tell you all, this monkey was shocked! And very happy to see his work set to video like this.

There is a post about it over in the Real World Records forum, and the direct link to the three videos is here: http://www.charismapro.co.uk/gabriel.htm

Simply click on the image of Peter Gabriel below the title to start the video, or right-click>save as.

Special thanks again to 'Charisma' for the honor, and of course, thanks to Peter Gabriel!

Hey Kenny

I agree, Charisma did a great job. I saw all 3, and I think she actually did a more interesting cut with Andy's (Hugobass) because it used more bits of footage. Still, there were parts that worked better in the one she made for me than the ones she made for Multiman and Hugobass, and vice-versa. It's really cool because the videos for each of us are so different. Thanks for the good Karma.

Thanks Clyde! (That's assuming you were addressing me, and not ol' Doghouse of course)

My mix seems to have come down with a rash of 1-star votes today. Any help I can get in the voting over there is surely appreciated. September 30 is the end of the contest. The weekly top 20 chart that is compiled this Sunday should be the final one of the competition. If I can keep a solid place in the weekly top 20 going into the end of the contest, that could really up my chances of Peter hearing my mix.

The same goes for Doghouse, who also has a realistic shot at having his mix heard.

Thanks for keping up the support everybody! It's a wonderful gift!

Went ahead and voted for you. Have to tell you though, VERY good competition your up against. Even the guy in the 20 spot has a absolutely killer mix.

September 30 is the end of the contest.

I want to enter this thing but I think I'm maybe too late in finding out about it. I don't know. It sounds like what you are basically saying is that if you aren't in a high position, like in the top 20-30, your chances of Peter actually listening to your mix are pretty slim, thereby drastically reducing your chances of winning. True?

Thanks Everyeleven. I agree about "dqsky's -Monkey from China" mix being a great one.. it's been in my personal favorites list over there since I first heard it

I'll try and explain the scoring to the best of my current knowledge.

When the contest started out, everything was going to be judged by peer ratings (stars.) After a little while, they added another priority to the scoring system -personal top 10 lists-

My understanding is that now, personal top 10 lists may be even more important than the stars. Everyone who logs in, in addition to voting, also has the option to add songs they like to their personal top 10 list and their personal favorites list. The top 10 list can be re-arranged at any time, with the number one spot being given 10 points, #2 = 9 points, #3 = 8 points, etc. They say they will compile the numbers at the end of the contest to determine a final 12 mixes that way.

So while it would be advantageous for you to post your mix at an earlier time, it still has a shot at making it onto everyone's top 10 lists, provided they get a chance to listen to it and place it on their personal top 10 list before October 4, 2006. Though the deadline for submissions to the contest is September 30, they will allow a few more days for everyone to listen to all the mixes and manage their top 10s.

I hope that explains things a bit better. That's about all I know of the scoring system at this time. The reason I think that having a strong spot on the weekly top 20 list would help, is because of visibility. However, even if you don't make it up before the final top 20 list is compiled, there is always the chance your mix could be "Hotpicked" by the Real World people, and your mix would gain visibility that way.

So I'd say get your mix up ASAP, but try not to cut too many corners if you can. You still have a shot, so go for it!!!

Like Sean says, the competition's rating system is a bit of a Rube Goldberg affair. And tho you're right, everyeleven, that there are many great mixes you should notice that nobody...not even the current number one has more than a 3 star rating. Nobody. That either means that there's not much agreement about ANY mix there or that there's just a lot of folks who rate very good mixes with very poor ratings. It's a wacky place. I think the "top ten" has been instituted to help prevent most shenanigans from happening. In other words each individual has 10 votes and that's it. Way more fair and appropriate. Sure there's still room for fraud but no system is "cheat proof". My only advice to anyone whose contemplating turning in a mix at this late date is hurry. It needs to be up long enough for enough folks to both hear it and place it in their top ten. That and don't put one up unless you can stand some serious criticism and rejection cause you're likely to get a heap of that too. But like my alter ego ol Doghouse Riley would say: Time's a wastin chillun, get to mixin!

That has got to be one of the funniest things I've heard. It's just so...so... I don't really know what. But it's so well done that it cracks me up. Overall, I'd have to say yours might be my favorite, only because it's so "off-topic" and unexpected, without going off into lala land. Sorta.

Hi John Glad you could make it in before the deadline. Great mix! Hopefully everyone reading this thread will check it out. You might also want to start another thread about it, because many people probably think this thread is just more of my monkey... would not want any to miss your work because it deserves to be heard. But your link is certainly welcome here.

I just read the comments you left for me at Real World, and I have to say, Thank You! I am glad you liked the way the vocal fit in with the music, because I tried the best I could to write the music around it in a believable way.

We'll see if we get to go before Peter G. this Wednesday, October 4.

Yeah, it sounds like you made a serious effort on that front. I wouldn't want to be undiplomatic, but to me, a lot of the mixes on there sound like people have just strapped some of their own music to the vocal, without really thinking about it compositionally. And I really don't like those much, even though some of them are very polished. There are some that are way more amateur, but a lot more inspired, if you know what I mean.

But I think the ones I like the best are, unsurprisingly, the ones that marry a good idea to a good execution, which I think yours did.

Sorry I've only just got around to rating. I've actually listened to all the ones on this thread a few times now, but not had time to rate and add comments. But now I'm done with my own, I'm going to do some proper voting and commenting tomorrow and Monday.

Thanks, I appreciate the comments, I wish I'd have been more keen on the fact that the deadline hinged on a +6hr time differential, somehow that just didn't clearly dawn on me.

They should've had some kind of clock on the site to make it blatently clear and impossible to inadvertantly overlook. So yeah...I'm kinda bummed about that, but at least people get a chance to check it out right...
