SMART LOOPS HELP NEEDED
Hello All - good to know I'm among like-minded friends; this is my first question so I hope I haven't gone on too long! I own both Guitar Tracks 2 and the newer Guitar Tracks Pro. I loved the ease of use and the user friendly onscreen window of the ‘Drag and Drop Drummer Lite’ that came with the Guitar Tracks -2 but found it limiting with the small choice of tempos available and the fact that the loops are not in ACID format. I upgraded to the Guitar Tracks -Pro 2.01 but do not find the bundled Fruity-Loops drum machine easy to work with; even when I’ve got a loop I’m happy with it is not of the quality of the Drag and Drop Drummer. To these ends, I recently bought the successor to Drag and Drop; i.e. SMART LOOPS. This seemed the ideal answer to my problems but I am having a little trouble getting the loops into a Guitar Tracks project – I find I have to load the CD and then access the loops from the ‘Import Audio’ drop down list in the Guitar Tracks ‘Edit’ button. Does anyone know if there is any way I can ‘install’ the Smart Loops samples so they can be accessed from the Guitar Tracks Tools’ menu [as can drag and drop, fruity loops etc] or is this the only way? I’ve considered re-authoring my Guitar Tracks -2 installation CD by removing the Drag and Drop Drummer files and replacing them with the Smart Loop files but don’t know whether they will retain their ACID format, or whether they will be installed at all in this way. Any advise from you guys would make this old strummer very happy! I thank you in advance of any help you can give me. Cheers – STEVE

I liked that little drag and drop drummer application also. I could not figure out how to do what you are asking about but I did save all of my drum files into a folder on my desktop. I then drag the loops from there into the "edit" view of my song. That's an easy way to do it.

Copy the files from your CD to a folder on your hard drive. Name the folder Drums (or any name of your choice). Select Options -> Global. Then the Folders tab. Locate the folder you just copied the files to in the Wave Files input box. Select OK. Select View -> Loop Explorer. It will default to the newly created Drums folder. Find the file you want drag & drop or double-click as you prefer. It will also preview the clip.

Hey, that rules! I was doing what the first guy was talking about, going to inport audio, and opening 4 different windows to get to a file, and doing that all day. This way is what I was looking for, and with preview, now it works like I though it should have. Great tool, and now building drum tracks is easy! Thanks! BTW, have you tried "Drums on Demand"? Great loops! easy to use too... -Mark

Hi guys; thanks for the replies. I'll give tmossman's suggestion a go - it sounds the perfect solution. As I'm not on the net at home [I use the local library] I apologise if I'm slow replying but I will post a note to let you know if your idea works. Thanks again - Steve

Re: tmossman's advice. I followed your advice to the letter and it works [but not quite the same way] - The difference is that I don't have 'Loop Explorer' in my drop-down 'View' menu - it just refers to the track numbers visible in the window. I can however access the 'Smart Loops' folder I created from the 'Import Audio' command. I selected this folder in the 'Select Options -> Global' explorer as you suggested, the Import Audio command now opens this folder by default and allows a preview of each loop...Brilliant! I am just wondering if you guys are using the newer GT Pro [the brownish box with the star on the front] and not the earlier version I use [purplish box with guitarist image] and that is why I can't find 'Loop Explorer'? Anyway it works perfectly so thanks again to all. Cheers - Steve PS-The Cakewalk Technical Support chap said re-authoring the installation CD won't work - just in case anyone was going to try it!!

It took a few minutes, but I think it's going to work! How cool! This is a path I would have never dreamed of. I was trying to do it all through IMPORT AUDIO. I've copied over some drums already, and on those it worked. I have quite a few CD's of drums, and am hoping they will all work this way. It takes a little time, so after I get everything copied over and working I will report back. If I hit another snag, I'll have another question! Thanks tmossman for a really great tip. Works great so far! JustGotPaid

Here's my update. This seems to work fine with GT3, but I can't get it to work in GT2. I don't see the LOOP EXPLORER option in the VIEW menu in GT2. Is there a way around this? Surely there is another option to make this work. Also, a friend I mentioned just got a new computer with VISTA. He is having trouble with GT3 on it. He is not on line at home and wanted me to ask if there is an upgrade so he can use GT3 with VISTA. He is now back to using GT2, but can't get all the drum loops to work for the reasons we have discussed here. I hope I am relaying this correctly. He really prefers GT2, since he gets a good sound and is familiar with it. The main concern now is if I can take his GT2 data bundle, add the guitar overdubs, put it in a revised data bundle, can he then use my GT3 overdubs on his GT 2. Thanks again! Don't know what I'd do without this forum as I learn my new computer and how GT 1, 2, and 3 works with it. I'm getting good sound and recording now, and hope to have all my drum libraries copied over in a day or so and get to some real recording. Will keep you posted. Thanks! JustGotPaid

You're better off using GT3 for your Smart Loops so you can use the Loop Explorer View to locate, audition, and import your loops. Grab more free Smart Loops here... http://www.smartloops.com/Free/

Hi there JGP Glad my original thread helped - I got confused because GT2 and GT Pro [version2] don't have a loop explorer - that's why tmossman's help was so important in getting my loops in there, and you get to audition them as well before you insert them [as in Drag and Drop Drummer]. As per my earlier answer, it is possible to 'Import Audio' to a GT2 project by opening a new project and then setting the tempo you want the song to run at; next open a loop in GT Pro at this tempo and then you can simply 'Copy' from Pro and 'Paste' into GT2. Good luck.

Strummer, Maybe the "Smart" loops product is above your technical abilities. Perhaps someone has a "Dumb" loops program that you can use.

Unless anyone actually likes having this idiot around ( on the basis that he makes everyone else look like a genius), I suggest that multiple reports to the moderators might see the back of him. I'll start.

What a cheap shot, how unnecessary, and I agree, there is no place on the forum for crap like that. It got old a long time ago. Thanks for all who have helped with my drum questions. I have really learned a lot from all the good tips here. I get more out of this, quicker, than the manual. Still on the learning curve, but sorta getting the hang of it now. One more...not drums...but I was trying to overdub a part and it seems the track is locked. I can open a new project and record fine on any track. But on this saved song I can't. I must have locked it some sort of way. No level, no sound on that track when I hit RECORD, no nothing. Have any of you had this trouble? And how do you deactivate that insane, unstoppable click track! haha Thanks! JusttGotPaid

Ahh Peter - 'tis you - hello there my very good friend!! Regarding your comments: Strummer, Maybe the "Smart" loops product is above your technical abilities. Perhaps someone has a "Dumb" loops program that you can use. If you'd looked closer, you'd have noticed that I started this thread with the 'Smartloops' question on 28th October last year. I replied on 31st October [that's 3 days later] thanking the guys on the forum because of the eight following reasons: 1. I took there advice and the solution was found - the product does what I want it to!! 2. I took there advice and the solution was found - the product does what I want it to!! 3. I took there advice and the solution was found - the product does what I want it to!! 4. I took there advice and the solution was found - the product does what I want it to!! 5. I took there advice and the solution was found - the product does what I want it to!! 6. I took there advice and the solution was found - the product does what I want it to!! 7. I took there advice and the solution was found - the product does what I want it to!! 8. I took there advice and the solution was found - the product does what I want it to!! I added the link to another chap so he could read the advice I received - he took note of it and guess what: He took there advice and the solution was found - the product does what he wants it to!! Pete - have you seen the way the wind is blowing here - sadly I think you haven't... Steve
