New Song

I produced this with Sonar 5PE with a great singer/songwriter at Collaboration Central
dot com.

the singer's name is Denise and she's from Lancashire in the UK. That's all I really know about her. She sent me her vocals over the net and I did the rest working from a basic demo.

This mix was done entirely "in the box" then mastered in Wavelab with some warming plugs. Thanks for listening in. Comments welcome.

What a beautiful song. She's got a great voice and I like the whole tune. Bass seems to be a BIT hot and it's covering up some of the subtle strings and synth work. Other than that - it's great!

Thanks for the kind words! Thanks too for the comment about the bass. I seem to struggle with that one on every mix.
Yes the typo has been corrected. I'm going to go back and re-mix the thing and see if I can get the bass more in line.

Great voice, the bass does sound a little strange. I dont know if its too hot or may just need some mids toned down a bit to give it a fatter end. It sounds loud and thin to me. Alot of great production techniques here. Im not sure I really love the tune but her voice is strikingly good. Good work, thanks for sharing.

    Hey audionautix,
    great track, lovely recording.
Criticism wise i'd say the vocals were a bit too big but i've heard stuff mixed like that so it's probably just a personal thing.
That piano sounds beautiful but then so does everything, i just thought it deserved a special mention.
I like the bass sound but i can understand the majority of listeners wanting something smoother, it has a nice Stingray kind of quality to it and just requires some softening in the mid somewhere.
    Cool stuff

don't know if you've remixed yet, but i'd dip 800hz on the bass - for this style i would go for a low-end bass sound with very little in the mids. it kinda competes with her voice which is um, awesome. the break at 2:42-2:47 is a bit stiff and there's a need to change up something until about 3:15. in fact i would use that section at the break and end it early. just personal taste though, i don't really listen to this style much.

i get the need for piano reverb but it's very resonant - i would put a high-pass on that verb starting in the mids and back off the verb a bit, or if you can use the same verb on the vocals with the piano so it sounds like they're in the same room.

the vocals are really out front on this and the instrument mix gets a little lost but it's not necessarily a bad thing - the vocals are really good and i'd keep them out front with maybe a little more groove thrown in.

overall i liked it and i'm not much for the female pop types.

    Jason,

Very very nice. What a voice she has! Good job on the instrumentation and the mix, what a fruitful collaboration!

Nice song, Jason. I'd consider cutting back some of the harmonies so as to be more effective when they do come in. I'm a harmony guy and I know how easy it is to get carried away. Yeah, too much mid in the bass.

Hey, I followed this tune for awhile at CC. I even had a guitar solo almost worked out when the tune moved away from the idea. Anyway, I think what most people are hearing is the piano and bass competing for the same space. Otherwise, great job.

Thanks for all of the great comments for the mix. I am getting a general concensus the main problem is the bass sound. I went back and re-mixed it lower. I have also heard from several people that the piano sound should be dryer. Thanks everyone for taking the time to comment.
It's concrete critique like this that really helps.
I may go back an re-mix this on my Ghost 32. I'm finding that mixing "in the box" is more conveinent, but not neccesarily better sounding. I will re-mix and re-post.
Thanks again. I have listened to many who have posted here. A boatload of talent. That's why I came here for mix advice.

Hi Jason, congrats on this fine tune! I wish I could say something new - things have been said in here already.
One thing: I personally thought the bass sounds very interesting. I'm always open for something new, besides, I think it fits well in this song.
Yes, and of course - Denise's voice is marvelous!
    Thanks for sharing
    Heinz.

Everything in the mix sounded perfect to me but I was listening on my headphones. I have to say that I'm really impressed with this. I happen to like this style of music and thought it was beautifully done! And yes, Denise has incredible vocal skills but I think the musical arrangement and choice of instruments really brought out the best in her vocals. My ears are less trained than some others in this forum but to me it sounded perfect the way it is. I think this tune would do very well in the commercial market and I'm jealous of your mixing skills.
