total eclipse, anyone?

Perhaps more for my Pacific Northwest brethren and sisteren . . . but perhaps for other inhabitants of the globe as well . . .

It's in a month. Aug 21st. Are you going??? Where? Is this a once-in-a-lifetime event?

I'm not going. I think it will be 3 minutes of dark, followed by 17 hours of traffic.

If you like Burning Man maybe you'll like this "event"

I dunno. I think the sun god might be angry at my lack of song production.

We had another eclipse here in pdx when I was  little.  I have fond memories of watching it get dark and then light (there was a cloud cover).  Creepiest thing?  This took place in the morning.  As it got dark all the birds stopped singing, then when it got light again, they started back up.  The silence of the birds was sublime.  (please no silence of the lambs jokes) :)

Although I do have friends making plans to stay at another friend's place (who lives in Lincoln City on the Oregon Coast), the news is constantly warning people to just stay home.  They're expecting people to stop on the freeway to watch the event.

I think I'll just avoid streets and take a nap.  I saw the one back in the 80's from So. California and it was a little interesting.  The weirdest thing is what Eph mentioned:  The birds think it's night for a few minutes before waking up and going back to making noise.

Yup.

I was in Switzerland during one once and there was all this big build-up and fuss about what a momentous thing it is that you will hardly ever see in your lifetime, blah, blah, blah and how you really shouldn't miss it and how to see it safely blah, blah, blah and all the best eclipse parties that were going on and then on the big day there was dense low cloud everywhere and nobody saw a thing.

Na, the cloud was so low that you couldn't see the birds either.

You could just buy the commemorative stamp with heat-sensitive ink: it changes from an eclipse to a full moon with just the heat of your finger.

“Beer is proof God loves us and wants us to be happy” is attributed to Benjamin Franklin perhaps in error, but the thought remains a worthy sentiment nonetheless.

Got our small community in the spotlight as "ground zero" for the eclipse. Depoe Bay, Oregon, USA.
Warnings sent out by the city to expect total chaos and break down of infrastructure. We are told to stock up, stay indoors and weather it out.
Irony is that we may be the best place as far as the physics of the thing, but the mornings are usually foggy and we are on the ocean cliffs with hills to the west. Chances of actually seeing the eclipse is not great. Everybody needs to go inland instead.

We just got good news!!
Weather is predicting overcast for the big event. We won't see anything here. They have also refined the ground zero area to Newport, 12 miles south of here. Hoping against hope for a deterrent.
Road north to Lincoln City is already more like a parking lot with the pre party folks arriving already and wandering aimlessly through the neighborhoods. We were warned.
Scalpers getting 1000 plus for a one night rental. Fogarty Park north may have 10 cars of visitors on a busy day. They issued 800 camping permits before they had to cut it off over sanitation containment.
Signs up for fire sale 100 dollars a day eclipse parking. More signs up warning no eclipse parking here.
Fire chief said not to feel like trapped inside a bomb shelter, just don't plan on taking a car anywhere.
Thanks to Allah this only happens every few decades or so.

Good call brother, ain't worth the commercialism and the congestion. However...

If you are close (where you at?). You and any other warriors in this sacred Sonar family who want to travel south or north to the rugged coast and hang out here for the event, 5 star ocean front accommodations are here to watch the event. Likely will only witness dimness for a few minutes, but cold beer on tap to dry tears of the foggy experience .

Best to all of you,
John

I appreciate the offer, but I'm approx equidistant from the left and right coasts.

I'm pretty close to the total path, so I'll prolly set up a time lapse sequence to demo how dark it gets here.

Can't figure out what the big deal is as well. With everything rented out at 1000 bucks a night and higher, seems like there are a lot of people with cash to burn. Maybe some serious astronomer folks and rich party seekers.

I did however think of a brilliant plan to help with the mole infestation in my back yard.

I'll start advertising for "Total Eclipse 2017 Commemorative Moles".

Rent out some shovels and set up a U-Pick operation.  The hundredth customer will also receive a free cat..

Just plain brilliant.

That looks almost as fun as a bug zapper!  Seriously though, get rid of the grubs (jap beetles) and the moles will leave on their own.

Right Bob,

This has been the most consistent thing I was able to research. Get rid of the worms, grubs and the little critters will seek elsewhere, though Craig's example is really tempting.

My next door neighbor to the south is about evenly split on the plague zone. He has his place as a vacation mansion and rarely comes to the coast. I called a few days ago expressing that we got a problem.
He made a trip over to check out the carnage first hand. He froze, put a handkerchief over his nose and turned a whiter shade of pale.

The feed store doesn't have any of the blasters. Still hope though. There's the local brothel, the Chinese restaurant, and the Baptist church.

The brothel is the second best idea after milky spore.  The brothel might be more fun, but make sure your shots are up to date.  Same for the Chinese joint.

Churches are a bad idea in general because the guilt makes you drink too much ... which you end up feeling guilty about.

You could always gift jap beetle lure/traps to all of your neighbors

Even after the moles have left, that blaster is pretty good at causing the tunnels to collapse so you don't have new moles moving in without work and so you don't accidentally put your foot into one.

Craig,

Correct as far as I can determine. The earth has been burrowed out underneath. Feels like more than a light step will sink you into the ground knee deep. Major damage. Taking also Bob's advice to make sure my shots are up to date and going to the brothel to rent their blaster. Most logical place out here to find one for rent.. Certain that the Baptist church has several of them, but trying to avoid the guilt trips associated.

I'm taking the day off and my wife and I and a few friends are heading to Beatrice, Nebraska. We are going to be on a spot that's the second highest point in the county - right under the direct path of the Eclipse. It's only about a 90 minute drive - should be fun! :)

I'm starting to get curious about how many folks will pack the available parking areas along The Path.

Looks like I'll be able to witness 98.5% from my porch.  Yep, my porch is the location I'll view from.
