touristSeason - new mix
Hi, this is an attempt at a Latin/Caribbean-ish type tune using Native Instruments horn samples. any mix criticism/advice/etc, is always greatly appreciated! touristSeason thanks and have a happy and safe New Year 1/2/11 - As suggested: I've added more reverb to the horns - Thanks Rik and Paulo made a 6db cut at 325Hz - Thanks Jimmy and worked on the horn dynamics - Thanks everyone. The eq and reverb changes also affected their respective volumes. I think I got everything straightened out but let me know if anything is out of whack. Thanks to all for the help

It is really wild how you can do so many different styles and do them all so well. You may be one of the only other people I know with as much talent as me.

Hi Gary, this is a great tune to listen to on a cold and snowy winters night, no need to turn up the heat. This is some smoking hot guitar playing. The horn samples sound is very dry and a bit synthetic but the composition is faultless. What a fun piece of music, I would take my hat of to you but it's to cold here . Greetings ,Rik

It's amazing how tight your playing is. The creative and musical way that it flows is outstanding. The performance is awesome as well as the production. The only thing that (to my ears) is that the bass guitar might be a little strong at about 325 hz. Maybe a 6 db cut at about 325 hz at a one octave width? Or a 3 db cut at the same on the whole mix? I can't say for sure so that's only a guess. I'd call that a tweak and not a crit because this is so very well done as is.

Gary, this is an awesome arrangement... I love the guitar tone and the playing is outstanding as usual... My only advice would be to experiment with "track volume envelopes" and "clip gain envelopes"... it can make the horns more believable... Happy new year...

I'm no fan of Latin Jazz, and I really enjoyed this... alot. The guitar playing was amazing, utterly amazing. The mix was great, except that I thought the guitar fell back in the mix just a bit towards the end. Minor crit for a great production to be sure, and frankly, it might just be me because if I could play like that I'd have that guitar turned WAY up

Hi, Welcome to 2011 and thanks for taking to time to leave a comment. twisted6s: Thanks again, Tony! Janet: Hi, Janet. Thank you...it's always great to hear from you. jimmyman: Hi Jimmy. Thanks for listening. I really appreciate the specific EQ advice and will make some adjustments and re-post within a day or 2. Thanks again, man. notnat: Hey Frank. Yea, 'believable' is the key, isn't it? I not only need to experiment with the envelopes I need to spend more time listening to real horn players/sections so I have a clearer idea of what I'm trying to achieve. Great advice, as always. Thanks and Happy New Year to you! Slow Marching Band: Thanks very much, James. Great to hear from one of my favorite players/arrangers/producers...I appreciate the comments and I'm glad you enjoyed the tune. philz: Hi Phil, I'm no fan of Latin Jazz, and I really enjoyed this I don't even really know if this IS Latin Jazz...it just seemed like the closest Soundclick category Thanks very much for taking the time to listen and comment. Much appreciated.

Not only is it authentic to the genre...MAa it's just plain KILLER !!! (meant as a compliment) I only heard in a few places that the horns sounded sampled.. It's really a good piece of work !! If you wrote this arrangement ...Kudos my friend !! This will definitely put a spring in anyone's step

Supa tight as always, Gary. What a guitar player you are. The only tiny nit I might say is that to capture the timeless feel, a little more width and reverb on the beats.

rhynosynth: Hi, Mark. Thank you, I appreciate the comments about the 'whole song' because, while guitar happens to be my main instrument, it's the arrangement, etc. that I'm mostly interested in. kev: Hi, Kev. Thanks very much, man. It's always great to hear from you stratrat1: Hi, Mark ( is that right? ). Thanks for listening and taking the time to leave a comment. I really appreciate the comments on the horns and overall arrangement. While the song and arrangement are mine, I definitely 'borrowed' some rhythms, etc. from 'real' Latin/Caribbean music. jamesyoyo: Hi, James. It's always great to get positive feedback from someone with your abilities. Here's where I get to show off my ignorance, though a little more width and reverb on the beats. By 'beats' we're talking about the kick drum, yes? How do I achieve more 'width' ? That's not the same as simply more volume...is it? Thanks very much, man.

Nicely done - mix is very well done - excellent clarity and balance. I agree with the comments re the horns - bit of reverb, bit of "swell" to them and you've nailed it. I wanna go on holiday now !

paulo: Thanks very much! I appreciate the listen, comments and especially the suggestions. I've added some more reverb to the horns, made the suggested (by Jimmy) 6db 325Hz cut to the bass and worked on the horn dynamics. If you get a chance let me know if I've made it better or worse Thanks again.

I've got 6 different monitor systems that I have to compare mixes with. 2 are studio powered systems and the others are just consumer. I don't do comparisons as often as I once did, I think mainly because I've gotten used to how my "main" monitors tell me things. I seem to be more of an "ear guy", meaning that I'll go to a "visual" to "check out" something rather than use a visual to "rely" on. The same sort of applies to using different play back systems as well. I try to keep it simple in terms of references. With that said (I did) check this out on different systems and do some "visual" and it was very impressive in all regards. The song/mix was great before but now it "really shines". The bass is much more "lush". It has it's clarity and is very "there" yet also smooth in the mix. The verb on horns really added a lot. The guitar work is more clearly noticeable in it's great tone and dexterity, probably because the mix is cleaner now. If the song forum had "stickies" for great mixes, productions, performances etc I'd like to see this in it. This is really "impressive" work.

as soon as it started I was a looking for my umbrella drink!!!!! super tight.. super cool gtr playing nice arrangement great dreams!!!! I guess the only thing I'm going to say is that althought I seem to be collecting more NI instruments (cause I think they sound good for the most part) I have to say I did not believe these horns....sorry .. cause I am surprised cause I really do think NI stuff is very good.... the other thing is you are a absolute superior player.....I'd give three fingers just to be able to play like your other's......but there was too many different styles in there.....when you were doing your single sting arpeggieos.....man that was killer....just killer....but when you were trying to get all that harmony stuff in there it seemed to me like you were trying to push it were it did not need to be pushed..... Just my two cents......but really over all.......man that was good ..... I had to listen a second time!!!! and maybe even a third...but I wouldn't tell!!!!!! Clifford

vechung: Hi and thank you. Looks like you spent lots of fun hours with this piece. Yea, it's always fun...although sometimes I consider it more like therapy Scottytunes: Hi, Scotty. Thanks very much, man. I don't know how you find the time to listen to other people's stuff, with all the recording you do, but I'm always glad to hear from you. morenoise: Hey Rik, thanks for your input on the reverb (or lack thereof) and for checking it out again. Stay warm! timidi: Tim, thanks for listening and commenting. I listened to your commercial demo... not only is the music and production totally pro but your speaking voice sounds as good as your singing voice. I was ready to buy those garlic pills. Very impressive! jimmyman: Jimmy, thanks so much for the kind words...and for your suggestion about the bass EQ. I know this is easy to say now but the bass tone WAS bothering me...I tried boosting some of the lower frequencies ( even though everything I read says to reduce rather than boost ) but that wasn't really working. You've got great ears, my friend, and I really appreciate your help. Thanks again. chrispydave: Hi, Dave. Thanks for stopping by and checking it ( and skinGame ) out. I'm glad you liked the tunes and I appreciate your taking the time to leave a comment. Also, I really liked 'Stay Where You Are'...cool song. Truckermusic: Hi, Cliff. Sorry the horns aren't doin' it for you I wouldn't be to hard on NI though. I suspect much of the problem lies in my lack of horn dynamic/articulation knowledge. Anyway, for $29 I wasn't really expecting miracles and, overall, they're a step up from the Gen Midi patches I've been playing around with. I appreciate the listen and comments and I'm glad you liked some aspects of the tune, though. Thanks. No How: Hi, Rick. Great to hear from you. Thank you for listening and commenting. I'm glad you liked the tune...I noticed you've posted a new song so I'm goin' over to check it out, right now! As always, I know everyone's busy and there's a bazillion songs out there so...thanks again for your time and your ears!
