trying to run old Cakewalk software

I already posted this in the Sonar section, but I'm hoping that someone in the Pro Audio section might have an answer to this:

I recently purchased Sonar Home Studio Version 4. I only need it for the MIDI sequencing software (I already have a Korg D3200 DAW), but I do need it to sync up, either as a slave or master, to my DAW. Turns out, it doesn't (doesn't generate or follow MTC).

I still have an ancient (1995) version of Cakewalk Professional 3.1 loaded on my hard drive (transferred my old hard drive files onto my new computer). It did exactly what I needed and synced up fine. But when I try to open it (on Windows XP Home) I get a "fault" message. Is there any way of running this old version on my new computer?

Thanks for the help.

    Marv,
Generally you can't just copy an application from one disk to another. The application needs to be "installed" so that things like the registry can be updated and DLLs registered and other mysterious stuff.

What is the fault message you get?

When you say Pro 3.1 did what you needed, you must mean it was OK when used on the old computer. Right?

If the DAW used to synch up to Pro 3.1 then it seems like it should still sync up with an appropriate app on the new computer. I don't use Sonar Home Studio but I would think that it has the ability to work with MTC. Does the Help facility say anything about MTC?

PS: I just looked in the Pro Audio 9 help and couldn't fint MTC or midi time code. It talks about Midi Sync. However, there is a Midi Sync toolbar which includes, among other things, a MTC button.

    Larry-

The first message I get: "An error has occurred in your application. Choose ignore or close."

Then this: "Wincake caused a General Protection Fault in Mod. TTSSEQ40.DLL at 0001:D0D"

The DAW (Korg D3200) is also new...back when I was using the old Cakewalk on my old computer I had two ADATs with a BRC controller.

After flailing around with my gear and on the Sonar Forum, I called Tech Help. I was told that Home Studio Version 4 has no MTC capabilities. It will roughly follow MIDI Clock, but with no start, stop, or Song Pointer (and if you look at what you've sequenced, say, in Staff View, the notes don't line up at all with the bar lines. Very bizarre). And It won't slave to the DAW at all.

Is Pro Audio 9 another Cakewalk product?

Well.... I stick with my claim that you would need to install the application rather than just copying the files to a new system. And since the app you used is pretty old it might have problems on WinXP anyway. Pro Audio 9 is the last in a line of Cakewalk products that did midi sequencing and audio recording. The successor to Pro Audio 9 was Sonar. Cakewalk does not support PA9 on WinXP (which means they will not answer questions and help with problems). However, many folks like me use it on WinXP just fine.

I'm surprised that Sonar Home Studio does not do MTC. Maybe there is some other form of sync that can be used but I'm not likely to be helpful finding out what it might be. Also, since I don't trust support folks much, I'd suggest that you go back to the Sonar or Home Studio forums and ask some questions about sync there.

    Good Luck,
    Larry

    To Kabak-

    How did you do it?

I've just about given up trying to open my old Cakewalk Pro for 3.1 on Windows XP. I've copied the old install floppy to a CD and tried it from there...still get fault messages. I've tried copying the old folder from the old HD (drive F) to the new HD (drive C). I've tried opening it directly from drive F. Nothing works. I even tried some programs to boot my computer from two different OS's. THAT didn't work. So...I think I'm gonna buy Mackie's Tracktion 2 (which I've demo'd). It doesn't have a Staff View, but it will synch up with everything.
