u-he | SATIN Tape Machine
released today- http://www.u-he.com/cms/satin----------------------/ u-he has announced 9 September as the release date for its Satin tape effects plug-in for Windows and Mac, with 64-bit support for both platforms. With its three operation modes, SATIN is an all-rounder: Studio mode is predestined for multichannel tape saturation effects, all optionally controlled from a single instance. Delay mode offers complex multitap tape delays, and Flange does true through-zero tape flanging (think Small Faces “Itchycoo Park” or Hendrix “Bold as Love”). In all modes, the tape speed is continuously variable from 7.5 to 30 inches per second. While aiming for a complete simulation of classic tape machines, u-he also decided to include the noise reduction circuits. This is not spurious whimsy: the classic compander models can be used for decoding old tape recordings, or for dynamic processing and colouration effects such as – a known trick amongst seasoned tape-ops – enhancing background vocals and e.g. acoustic guitars. Since releasing their analogue synth plug-in Diva, u-he have been making a big thing of the accuracy of their models – SATIN is the next member of an ongoing series…
u-he Satin Tape Machine effect plugin. VST, VST3 and AU versions are included, with AAX support for Pro Tools in the pipeline. Satin features - Mix-and-match emulation spans all major historical developments in tape technology.
- Multiple instances can be controlled from one panel – ‘glue’ several tracks together.
- High-quality: internal sample rate up to 384kHz, continuous tape speed control.
- All the ‘goodness’ of tape (saturation, transient-smoothing, HF compression etc.).
- Full control over the ‘badness’ (head-bump, wow&flutter, asperity noise, hiss etc.).
- Record / repro EQ standards (separately selectable), classic NR compander standards.
- Extra FX modes: through-zero tape flanging, host-synchronizable 4-tap stereo delay.
Satin will be available to purchase on September 9th, 2013, for a 4-week introductory price of $89 USD (regular $129 USD). More information: u-he / Satin

Yet another saturation / delay plug in - unless you've been in another galaxy, I can't believe most people won't already have something (or perhaps two plug ins that combine ) that does something very similar to this - I just wonder how many they will ever sell...also its not cheap!!! Nigel

I don't think it's that expensive & I'm sure they'll sell quite a few copies if it delivers or is useful. Their synths are great & I will definitely check it out although I may not purchase. (BTW Toneboosters' ReelBus is getting revamped too, it will include an 'output level' feature)

I don't know, at full retail US$129 seems a lot to me - especially when reel bus, which I have and use all the time, is only 15 Euro. Or how about some of the bootsie ones which are free!! I suppose it depends on what it does and what it sounds like - perhaps I'm just getting saturated with saturation plug-ins and am suffering from saturation fatigue..........

It's all relative. Look at Fab-Filter's Pro-L @ $220.00 retail. That's very steep when there's good & cheaper alternatives for that as well. But after demoing it I bought on sale with only a slight price reduction. The reason I don't mind is because I find it a very useful tool. It gets used on all my projects where some of the other ones have been deleted off my computer completely.

Likewise, there's Magnetic II, which I recently did some serious listening to for the first time. Really liked what it did in the saturation simulation department. Will Satin be better? Probably because it's u-he. But $129 better? That would be quite a feat. The one thing that might make it a worthwhile acquisition is the multiple-instance business. That's probably going to be the make-or-break factor on the success of Satin. They're not going to sell many copies because the buyer wants another delay.

I think it is just hilarious that we all spend tons of money for a plugin to put back in what we all went to digital DAWs to avoid in the first place! When we all started out we clamored over the quietest and cleanest sounding DAW we could get for the money and spent wads of cash to get that. Now, we spend wads of cash clamoring for the latest and greatest saturation, noise generating, and dirt sounder we can get our hands on. Maybe I should dig out that 24 track reel to reel machine and get rid of all this digital cleanliness! JUST A JOKE, FELLOWS! I'm not a troll! LOL!

Right after the Alesis ADAT (disclaimer: I owned three of them along with the Alesis X2 console), my son and I both conjectured that one day there will be software to give us the tape sound back.

I may check out Satin, but the price is a little steep for me as well. I have Reelbus and Kramer tape and Magnetic I and II. I used to use Magnetic all over the place and then one day I took it off and realized it made everything too over-compressed or something. I seemed to me to take away the nice transients I already had. Not sure if I'm explaining exactly right, but since then I've tried them a time or two and always (so far) ended up taking them off and using something else.

I think it is very fairly priced when compared to things like Slate Tape and Waves Tape emulations. Plus, the guy who designed it Sascha Eversmeier is considered one of the very top guys in the DSP field- chances are it will be top class.

Hey, Bapu! I, too, went down the Adat road with three Adats and the BRC! Now I wish I had a boat because I have lots of anchors! Right after I bought them Alesis was bought out! What great timing I have! I have to say I never looked back after going ITB.

Sidroe, remember how cut-n-paste was a kick in the arse on the ADATS. Point to chorus 1 on machine A track 3 and drop in at chorus 2 on machine B (or C) on track N and then copy back to machine A on track 3 in chorus 2 position. Good times.

Satin will be a hit, as it appeals to not one but two cults: the cult of u-He and the cult of saturators. And of course, it can also be viewed as a type of compressor, so there ya go: the compressor cult can get excited, too. Disclosure: I am a fan of Zebra, and I think Urs Heckman is one of the coolest devs out there. But I haven't actually taken the blood ritual and joined the cult outright.

I have a friend of mine that is a very reputable producer with a heck of a track record that ran Adats with a BRC. He would call me to engineer for him sometimes. He almost passed out when I showed him there were actually punch in/out location points on the BRC! All these years he said it was always easier to do it by hand! Now, what did I do with my razor blade and scotch tape? LMAO!

scook Even more of a tease http://www.u-he.com/downloads/Satin/Satin1807Mac.zip http://www.u-he.com/downloads/Satin/Satin1807Win.zip From the developer (Urs) about these builds: "It works in demo mode, and sometimes it crashes. We've fixed about 4 remaining bugs/niggles today and we're on a good track to fix the rest till weekend."
You can purchase it now too. I'd give the link but not sure if the dev would approve. Briefly worked with it, very nice. Not sure I'll get this but the $89.00 intro price is right. I did have a crash when bypassing but as noted this isn't their finished demo version either. I think many are going to like this.

Thanks carl- I hunted down the link and I don't think the dev would mind as he posted it there himself. It can be found in the u-he sub forum at KVR posted by Urs if anyone else is interested. I bought it and authorized the demo so no more static bursts.

You're not the only one. I bought it a couple of years ago because there were very few options on Mac. As soon as Waves dropped the iLok, I replaced it w/ Kramer's MPX. If not for their policies which forbid re-selling, I'd have gotten rid of those few NF plugs that I own.

it will sell.. as Bit said.. a LOT of people have time for the developer who made / put a lot of corporates to shame, with a few reasons.. customer service being one , he was a 1 man army pretty much for a long time.. the plugins they make aren't exactly cpu light.. but they are decent and aren't devalued too much. same goes for fabfilter.. remember 2 pricing schemes.. 1)new customer 2)old customer.. and bigger discounts.. and it's deffo one to save up for xmas and buy a bundle IF you want the best deal (thats what I did) it is a case of try the demo first , decide for yaself.. and it's got an intro price till early oct? I'm just spending a stupid amount on my car of late , due to 2 idiots who hit / run it.. thats £750 ($1400) I could have spent on plugins , instead of ****s who can't drive

Well I tried the demo and as I said before I was very skeptical re this....but wow, is it good!! So just had to buy it....... I think I will use this more for the delays / flanging and sculpting effects than just saturation, but I am very happy to say just how wrong I was. I love this already!! Nigel
