undissed - New mix 3/3/12

undissed

Remixed 3/3/12 - I'm still not all that happy.  Mixing advice gladly received!...

All comments appreciated.  I'm not too happy w/ the drum sound, but they're not horrible.  Any thoughts?

Does V1 sound too empty in context w/o bass?

Peace,

Ian

    Ha! First :-)

When I saw the title? I thought it was clever, and I was looking forward to hearing the story? :-( THERE ARE NO WORDZ! It's pretty, I would mix the drums up a little (can't believe I'm making a mix comment based on my notebook speakers...) But they feel a bit distanced? I like the way it moves through cords without being necessarily formulaic? Most of my stuff is like 3 chords? So I am always amazed when I hear a piece that seems to move in ways that I don't expect. I think you did a good job here, this could be really great with a good lyric.

It's a nice tune. Very nice actually. The piano and strings sound really nice.

Just a few notes: The piano is really loud! Or everything else is really low. I dunno. Drums and bass can be pushed much further to the front in my opinion. And there's something about the programing of the drums. I don't really like the stops. You could fill in with some modest drum breaks or something. They are ok but could be better. I like the drive of the hi-hat tho.

All in all this is a really nice tune. I kind of get this nice little TV-show theme song to it that always make you smile and relax and expect a good time and beautiful girls. It's very summer-ish

The short version: I liked it!

Thanks Robby and PM - I agree w/ you guys about the drums.  Bascially I want them punchier, but not much louder.  I want the piano really upfront cause it's got the melody.  If I mix it back, the melody gets obscurred.  This started out as a solo piano piece, but it didn't work that way.  All the syncopations need a beat.

Thanks for checking it out.  Yeah - it's very light.

    Peace,

    Ian

I'm a big fan of Bruce Hornsby, and this sounds like something he might do... maybe a little more verb on the kit... very nice... well done...

I like the melody a lot.  The whole piece needs ambience.  I wold do the drums with brushes and then cranked up.  Add some guitar too.  The song is worth more effort!

Thanks Frank and RS... I'm going to give this a few days and have a go at the mix.  I dunno about guitar... The melody already seems kinda crowded by those 2 synth parts in places.  That's an interesting idea about the brushes.  I'll see what Abbey Road Drummer can do....

Thanks much for the feedback guys.

    Hey , Ian
Nice piece.  great piano playing!  the drum kit is too dry - you need some room ambience and/or verb in there.  I'd bring the bass up a little, too.  it sometimes gets buried by the piano.

I'd like to hear some vox on this, too.  just MO, tho.

Off to a great start! Everything is crystal clear. I agree with the others on the drum verb.

It's funny how times change.  People are clamoring for more reverb  on the drums, and a few years ago, everything was dry, dry, dry.  Wait five to ten years and people will say this was perfect.  The music is very melodic and well played.  The mix is nicely balanced.  If you add reverb, don't go overboard.  You've already succeeded.

    All the best,
    Lynn

bass? yes needs more and better bass...this is a good tune let down by arrangement. drums are equally as bad as the bass. in terms of mix. but a nice tune to build on...where you wanna go here?

Agree with comments so far re drums / lack of bass making piano too dominant in the mix to me

    Hey Ian!

Just checking back in to tell you I've been humming bits and pieces of this tune all day! Probably didn't do it right but it really stuck with me none the less

Just had to listen to it again and tell you. Good stuff, man

    Hi Ian,

Very nice melodic piano instrumental. Really like the arrangement...

    Well done...

    Thanks very much guys.

Beagle, SJ and Paulo - I isoloted the individual drums and had a go at remixing them.  They're louder w/ more verb, though not a huge amount.  They're a little more compressed and re-eq'd too.  Basically I remixed from scratch.  The piano is probably still too loud for some but hey, I'm a piano player!

Lynn - Thanks much.  Much appreciated!

MGH - Sorry the bass doesn't work for you.  I'm not a very accomplished bass player.  Sometimes I hire out the bass, but I like this OK.  It's functional at least.  In the new mix it's also louder!  Thanks for checking out the tune.

PM - Man that super nice to hear.  Thanks so much!

geeare1 - Thanks much.  Glad it worked for you.

Thanks everyone for checking out the tune!

    Peace,

    Ian
