upgrade Win7 from Vista

Has anyone tried the overwrite upgrade from Vista to Win7?  I'm wondering how reliable and clean it is.  I would hate to reinstal and update all of my programs.  I realize it does not sound very safe.
Any feedback would be appreciated

Upgrades, generally, are safe with Win 7.  It's not like the "good old days" when it required a clean install.   However, if you want to go from 32 bit OS to 64 bit OS you must do a complete clean install.

I have a Laptop that I did an upgrade from Vista 32 bit to Win 7 32 bit and except for a couple of incompatible software items it all went well.

great thanks for the good news!  I plan on going from Vista 64 to W7 64 so hopefully no issues besides possibly a couple drivers

    Just want to update,

I completed this upgrade last night from the W7 upgrade disk, everything is intact and working (so far).  It was very simple.

Basically Win 7 is "Vista Improved" so an upgrade should be "painless".

In the 32bit realm, would Win7 be better (more efficient in the 4Gb RAM useage) than Vista? I use a lot of softsynths in Vista inside Iobits Game Boster (which temporarily shuts down background Windows apps in order to maximize my resources......and it makes a big difference Ram-wise), but not sure how Win7 wold do (with the same scenario)?

Win 7 should work just like Vista 32 bits, it is basically "Vista Improved" with some functions but the basic core is identical.  A 32 bit OS cannot fully address 4GB and the reason for the limitation with 32 OS's - regardless of what OS.  Some of what is "used" is for video memory, hardware driver buffers, etc and you can't get around that.  Generally 3.0 to 3.5 GB of RAM is "useable" after Windows starts.  I have Vista 32 bit OS installed on this PC, on a separate drive and if I boot to that, I see 3.24GB of "useable" RAM after Windows starts.

If your PC is 64 bit capable, it would be better to go to 64 bit OS as it can fully address 4GB, but with only 4 GB you will still see "something less than 4 GB" available after Windows starts as it still needs the same Video memory, hardware driver buffers, etc.   The real solution is a 64 bit OS and more than 4 GB of RAM.  I have 8 GB of RAM in my Win 7 64 bit (Professional) OS.

32 bit applications run fine in 64 bit OS, there is no drawback there.

I have no complaints with Vista, I didnt jump in until service pack 2 so I missed the original release where people basically had torches and pitch forks in their hand because it sucked so bad.  Vista has been more stable for me than XP ever was.

Anyhow, I only upgraded to W7 because I have to instal PT on my machine and PT9 doesnt work with Vista (odd I know).

Just a heads up for anyone doing the upgrade, after installing W7 over Vista, I had like 90 'important windows updates" to download.  For whatever reason it would always fail until I started updating 12-15 at a time.  I would say if Vista is working for you and you have no special reason to swap to W7 I would just stick with it.
